Most COVID-19-associated hospitalizations occur in older adults, but severe disease that requires hospitalization occurs in all age groups, including adolescents aged 12-17 years (1). On May 10, 2021, the Food and Drug Administration expanded the Emergency Use Authorization for Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to include persons aged 12-15 years, and CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommended it for this age group on May 12, 2021.* Before that time, COVID-19 vaccines had been available only to persons aged ≥16 years. Understanding and describing the epidemiology of COVID-19

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) constitutes a major health burden worldwide due to high mortality rates and hospital bed shortages. SARS-CoV-2 infection is associated with several laboratory abnormalities. We aimed to develop and validate a risk score based on simple demographic and laboratory data that could be used on admission in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection to predict in-hospital mortality.
METHODS: Three cohorts of patients from different hospitals were studied consecutively (developing, validati

In this study we report the analysis of 131 Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) clinical isolates from patients hospitalized in various wards, of Perugia General Hospital, from August 2014 to January 2015. Forty two isolates (32.1 %), were resistant to at least one carbapenem antibiotic and, among these isolates, 14 (33.3 %) exhibited resistance to colistin. All isolates were carbapenemases producers and 41 (97.6 %) harboured the bla KPC gene. Carbapenem-resistant K. pneumoniae isolates (CRKPs) were, also, typed for the genotypic diversity and the results revealed the circulation of two majo

BACKGROUND: Predicting in-hospital cardiac arrest (IHCA) is crucial for potentially reducing mortality and improving patient outcomes. However, most models, which rely solely on vital signs, may not comprehensively capture the patients' risk profiles. We aimed to improve IHCA predictions by combining vital sign indicators with laboratory test results and, optionally, International Classification of Disease-10 block for diagnosis (ICD10BD).
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study in the general ward (GW) and intensive care unit (ICU) of a 680-bed secondary healthcare institution. We

The relevant and correct prescribing of medical biology is a major public health issue. Correct prescribing is a legal obligation under article L6211-8 of the French Public Health Code and is an integral part of the biologist's daily work, already specified in the 2012 (section 4.7) and 2022 (section 5.3.3) versions of the NF EN ISO 15189 standard. COFRAC document SH REF 02 v08 specifies the requirements for consultancy services. The adaptation of the prescriptions is a revision of the contract with the prescriber, which makes it possible to optimize patient care and ensure the satisfaction of

BACKGROUND: Influenza is a major cause of acute respiratory infection burden worldwide, leading to many hospitalizations. An annual influenza vaccine is believed to be the best way to prevent influenza-related illnesses. We focused on the efficacies of other possible preventive measures such as increasing sun exposure time and dietary supplements to prevent these illnesses.
METHODS: We conducted a matched-pair case-control study along with the Taiwan Pediatric Infectious Disease Alliance. We included influenza-related hospitalized patients with age ranging from 6 months to 5 years during the

INTRODUCTION: Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are biomarkers used to diagnose, monitor, differentiate, and treat various systemic autoimmune rheumatic diseases (SARDs). The gold standard test for SARD screening involves using human epithelial cells (HEp-2) in an indirect immunofluorescence assay (IIFA) to detect ANA. However, diagnosing autoimmune disorders can be challenging when patients test ANA-negative but exhibit specific autoantibody patterns targeting the cytoplasm or mitotic spindle apparatus in the IIFA. To address this, the International Consensus on Antinuclear Antibody Patterns has p
