Conventional and molecular techniques for the laboratory diagnosis of infections of the central nervous system.

This article discusses general principles of laboratory diagnosis, detection of microbial antigens, specific chemical reactants associated with inflammation of the CNS, and diagnostic tests in development for the laboratory diagnosis of infectious meningitis.

Laboratory infection of primates with Ascaris suum to provide a model of allergic bronchoconstriction.

Wild-caught non-human primates are naturally sensitive to Ascaris antigen and provide a useful model for studying atopic asthma. The present study was carried out to determine the effect of experimentally infecting home-bred macaques with the nematode Ascaris suum and hence provide an alternative for the naturally occurring model. Following oral infection with the parasite the animals developed a blood eosinophilia and specific antibodies to purified Ascaris antigen. These antibodies appeared to be of the IgE class as they could be detected by a radiometric assay using a radiolabelled antibody

Attempts to establish infections with Strongyloides stercoralis in mice and other laboratory animals.

Infection of a dog with Strongyloides stercoralis filariform larvae resulted in a persistent infection. Patent infections were not seen in rabbits, guinea-pigs, rats and 11 inbred strains and one outbred strain of mice. Manipulation of factors known to influence S. ratti infections in mice, such as age and sex of the host and the route of larval presentation, did not facilitate the appearance of rhabditiform larvae in the stools. Administration of immunosuppressive doses of corticosterioids to rabbits, guniea-pigs and C57Bl/6 mice did not permit complete development. Similarly, th course of in

Evaluation of the rabbit as a laboratory model for infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus infection.

Experimental infection of rabbits with infectious bovine rhinotracheitis virus (IBRV) produced diverse manifestations of disease which included abortion, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, vulvovaginitis, systemic infection, neonatal death and respiratory tract infection. Each disease syndrome was studied using virus isolation, fluorescent antibody examination and histologic examination. Conjunctivitis, dermatitis and vulvovaginitis lesions were characterized by edema, infiltration of mucosa and submucosa with inflammatory cells and ulceration of epithelium. Systemic infection resulted in severe necr

Clinical and laboratory studies with cefaclor: efficacy in skin and soft tissue infections.

Clinically relevant, recent isolates of common Gram-positive pathogens were examined for their in vitro susceptibility to cefaclor. Group A streptococci and pneumococci were uniformly sensitive (MICs 0.06--0.12 micrograms/ml) to both cefaclor and cephalothin. Cefaclor was 5--10-fold less active than cephalothin against group B streptococci. S. aureus strains were uniformly more susceptible to cephalothin than to cefaclor, but among isolates from children, almost all were sensitive to the latter drug. In clinical studies of patients with skin and soft tissue infections, cefaclor proved effectiv

Epidemiologic study of dermatophyte infections in Nigeria (clinical survey and laboratory investigations).

The commonest dermatophyte infection among the referred dermatology cases in Nigeria is tinea pedis, whereas among the surveyed population of school children, the commonest fungal infection was tinea capitis. It was found that the most ubiquitous causative organism for tinea pedis was E. fluccosum, that for tinea capitis was M. audouinii, while that for tinea corporis was T. soudanese. The source of infection of tinea capitis among the school children was found to be most likely the local barber who serviced the schools in all the villages, and this might explain the high incidence rate of T.

Laboratory-acquired infections at the National Animal Disease Center 1960--1976.

Experience with exposure to, or infection with pathogenic agents at the National Animal Disease Center is summarized. A total of 60 laboratory-associated exposures to infectious disease agents were reported. Forty-nine exposures resulted from known accidents, but the other 11 were identified only after the development of clinical or serological manifestations of infection. Eighteen cases of laboratory-acquired infections were reviewed. Brucellosis, the most frequently reported laboratory-acquired infection, accounted for one-half of the cases summarized. Three cases of leptospirosis, two cases

Limited genome evolution of Cryptococcus neoformans following an accidental infection in the research laboratory.

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous infections resulting from accidental exposure to fungal pathogen Cryptococcus neoformans in research laboratories are rarely reported in the literature. To fill a gap in published guidance for handling these situations promptly when they arise, we describe a case report plus three additional examples as a guide to effective resolution. CASE SUMMARY: An immunocompetent laboratory researcher developed primary cutaneous cryptococcosis following accidental infection with Cryptococcus neoformans H99 via a needle scrape that was initially assumed not to have penetrated the ski

The future of fungal diagnostics: What's next in laboratory testing for invasive fungal infection?

Invasive fungal infection (IFI) is responsible for millions of deaths globally each year. Prompt diagnosis of IFI is critical, with delay associated with increased mortality. Traditional, culture-based diagnostics are relatively slow and insensitive. Novel molecular techniques, biomarkers and point-of-care tests hope to overcome these limitations. However, these newer methods come with issues of cost, accessibility, and standardisation. This review briefly lays out the current diagnostic landscape, highlights important changes to standards of care, then explores new developments and the future

Perioperative Laboratory Markers as Risk Factors for Surgical Site Infection After Elective Hand Surgery.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no association between perioperative laboratory markers (serum albumin and hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c]) and incidence of surgical site infection (SSI) after soft tissue upper extremity surgery. METHODS: We analyzed patient-level data from a large, insurance-based database containing supplemental laboratory results. We identified patients undergoing soft tissue upper extremity surgery (defined as carpal tunnel release, trigger finger release, wrist ganglion excision, cubital tunnel release, Dupuytren partial fasciectom
