Differential activation of mast cells by antigens from Trichinella spiralis muscle larvae, adults, and newborn larvae.

Mast cell (MC) hyperplasia and activation are prominent features in Trichinella spiralis infection. Indeed a temporal correlation has been shown between the kinetics of intestinal mastocytosis, release of inflammatory mediators from MC, and adult worm loss, which constitutes a major component of the defense against T. spiralis infection. It is well known that during the intestinal phase of trichinellosis, muscle larvae (ML) and adult worms (AD) enter into contact with the host; however, interaction with MC may also occur during migration of newborn larvae (NBL). Therefore, it is plausible that…

[Studies on chemotactic behaviors of Strongyloides ratti infective larvae in vitro and migration routes of the larvae in rat head].

For the purpose of clarifying host-finding mechanisms, the infective larvae of Strongyloides ratti were run on an agarose plate which had been placed various attractants around the larvae. They were accumulated at the sites of sodium compounds, serum proteins and albumins. At 20, 30, 40 hours after infection, rats were killed and heads were separated. They were then processed for thin section specimens. Larvae were found in brains, olfactory bulbs and its nerves. These larvae seemed to move along olfactory nerves during descending from the cranial cavity. Another migration study was done by wh…

A freeze-fracture study of the body wall of adult, in utero larvae and infective-stage larvae of Trichinella (Nematoda).

The surface layers of the cuticle, the hypodermal membranes and the muscle membranes of the adult, the in utero larvae and the infective-stage larvae of the nematode Trichinella spiralis have been studied by means of the freeze-fracturing technique. The surface of the cuticle of both adults and larvae fractures in ways different from membranes of internal cells. The surface coat on top of the epicuticle is probably the layer that changes antigenically. Reticulate ridges, with associated particles, on the E face of the outer hypodermal membrane of the adult are probably sites of attachment of t…

A behavioral architecture for realistic simulations of Drosophila larva locomotion and foraging.

The Drosophila larva is extensively used as a model organism in neuroethological studies where precise behavioral tracking enables the statistical analysis of individual and population-level behavioral metrics that can inform mathematical models of larval behavior. Here, we propose a hierarchical model architecture comprising three layers to facilitate modular model construction, closed-loop simulations, and direct comparisons between empirical and simulated data. At the motor layer, the autonomous locomotory model is capable of performing exploration. Based on novel kinematic analyses, our mo…

Unusual bot fly larva removed from the scalp of a returning traveler.

An aberrant bot fly specimen was removed from the scalp of a patient 3 wk after returning from Belize. The specimen showed little resemblance to the typical human bot fly larva, Dermatobia hominis, prompting a molecular identification using cytochrome oxidase I and II (COI and COII, respectively) mitochondrial DNA sequence regions. A BLAST search was subsequently performed, and both our COI and COII amplicon sequences showed 99-100% match with Dermatobia hominis, despite the specimen's clearly aberrant morphology. These findings suggest there is much wider variation in Dermatobia larval morpho…

The fourth-stage autoinfective larva of Strongyloides stercoralis: redescription and diagnostic implications.

Human strongyloidiasis is often underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, which can relate to a lack of knowledge or recognition of the importance of particular developmental/larval stages of Strongyloides stercoralis in making an accurate diagnosis using parasitological methods (a morphological approach or morphological features/characters). Here, we report the identification of S. stercoralis autoinfective fourth-stage larvae (L4a) in naturally infected humans, encountered in two clinical cases in Australia. These larvae were identified in sputum (Case 1) and bronchoalveolar lavage (Case 2) specimens …

A Case of Cutaneous Larva Migrans in a Child from Vinces, Ecuador.

BACKGROUND Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is caused by nematode parasites of the hookworm family of Ancylostomatidae. Ancylostomiasis is a zoonosis found in cats and dogs, and humans are an accidental host. This report presents a case of CLM in an 8-year-old boy, which was due to the zoonotic transmission of Ancylostoma caninum from domestic dogs in an urban area of Vinces, Ecuador, and demonstrates how awareness and early diagnosis contributed to the timely treatment of CLM. CASE REPORT An 8-year-old boy from the urban area of Vinces city in the Los Ríos province of Ecuador presented with a se…

Bullous cutaneous larva migrans: case series and review of atypical clinical presentations.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (HRCLM) is caused by the penetration and migration in the epidermis of larvae of Ancylostoma braziliense and Ancylostoma caninum. It is characterized by slightly raised and erythematous tracks, located especially on the feet. These tracks may be single or multiple, serpiginous or linear, ramified and intertwined, accompanied by pruritus. Atypical clinical presentations of HRCLM are currently more frequent than in the past. We present six patients with bullous HRCLM and discuss the possible pathogenetic factors. Furthermore, we present a review of atypic…

Draft Genome of Toxocara canis, a Pathogen Responsible for Visceral Larva Migrans.

This study aimed at constructing a draft genome of the adult female worm Toxocara canis using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and de novo assembly, as well as to find new genes after annotation using functional genomics tools. Using an NGS machine, we produced DNA read data of T. canis. The de novo assembly of the read data was performed using SOAPdenovo. RNA read data were assembled using Trinity. Structural annotation, homology search, functional annotation, classification of protein domains, and KEGG pathway analysis were carried out. Besides them, recently developed tools such as MAKER, P

Botfly larva masquerading as periorbital cellulitis: identification by point-of-care ultrasonography.

Myiasis, or the infiltration of the botfly larvae, is a relatively frequent problem encountered by travelers to parts of Latin America. This is a novel case report that documents a Dermatobia hominis infestation of the left facial region with secondary periorbital cellulitis diagnosed by point-of-care ultrasonography.

An anisakis larva attached to early gastric cancer: report of a case.

Gastrointestinal anisakidosis is a nematode infection caused by the ingestion of larvae-infected raw or undercooked fish. The Japanese like to eat raw or undercooked fish, so gastric anisakiasis is a common disease in Japan. However, reports of anisakiasis with gastrointestinal cancer are rare. A 63-year-old Japanese male was diagnosed with a small early gastric cancerous lesion associated with gastric anisakiasis. From our experience and based on a review of the literature, the attachment of an anisakis larva to early gastric cancer is not considered accidental.

[Visceral larva migrans with cardiac manifestation: a case report and literature review].

INTRODUCTION: Toxocariasis is a roundworm infection that may be associated with serious cardiac manifestations. We report one case and review another 12 cases in the literature. CASE REPORT: A 74-year-old man, presented with clinical features of myopericarditis. Eosinophil count was 20,000/mm(3). The ELISA and Western Blot were positive for Toxocara canis. The patient was treated with corticosteroids and antiparasite treatment. The outcome was rapidly favorable. DISCUSSION: In the other 12 cases, the cardiac manifestations were often severe: six myocarditis, three tamponades and three Loeffl
