Eosinophilic pneumonia due to visceral larva migrans possibly caused by Ascaris suum: a case report and review of recent literatures.

We report the case of a 62-year-old man who developed eosinophilic pneumonia due to visceral larva migrans (VLM) that was possibly caused by Ascaris suum. The patient, a resident of the middle Kyushu area who was found of eating raw porcine liver, complained of dry cough without dyspnea. The chest radiography showed a migration of infiltrative shadow. Transbronchial lung biopsy of the right middle lobe revealed massive infiltration of eosinophils. The multi-dot enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and microtiter plate ELISA showed positive results for A. suum; therefore, the patient was d…

High prevalence of Ancylostoma spp. infection in dogs, associated with endemic focus of human cutaneous larva migrans, in Tacuarembo, Uruguay.

A helminthological survey of the intestinal parasites in stray dogs was conducted in urban and suburban area of Tacuarembó, Uruguay, during winter time. Eighty stray dogs captured in the city were necropsied. Seventy nine dogs (98.8%) were positive for helminth infection. Seventy seven (96.3%) were parasitized by hookworms. Two species of hookworms were found: Ancylostoma caninum 96.3% and A. braziliense 49.4%. This is the first report of the prevalence of A. braziliense in Uruguay. Considering that incidences of human cutaneous larva migrans caused by the migration of hookworms larvae were re…

Toxocara and Ascaris seropositivity among patients suspected of visceral and ocular larva migrans in the Netherlands: trends from 1998 to 2009.

Toxocara canis, Toxocara cati and Ascaris suum are roundworms of dogs, cats and pigs, respectively, that can also infect humans. These zoonotic helminths have a worldwide distribution and are also endemic in the Netherlands. Infection with Toxocara sp. may result in visceral larva migrans (VLM) or ocular larva migrans (OLM) caused by the migrating larvae. Although A. suum has been reported to occasionally mature to the adult stage in humans, clinical cases of VLM suspected to be caused by A. suum have been described. Diagnosis of these helminth infections relies mainly on serology. Here we ana…

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans in patients living in an endemic community in Brazil: immunological patterns before and after ivermectin treatmen.

Hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans (Hr-CLM) is caused by animal hookworm larvae migrating in the human epidermis where they elicit an inflammatory response. This study describes the immunological profile in Hr-CLM patients. In 77 Hr-CLM patients from Manaus, Brazil, peripheral eosinophils were counted, and serum concentrations of total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and selected cytokines were determined by ELISA before and after treatment with ivermectin. Controls included patients' household members (endemic controls), non-endemic Brazilian and Japanese individuals. Eosinophil counts and total…

IL-5 drives eosinophils from bone marrow to blood and tissues in a guinea-pig model of visceral larva migrans syndrome.

This study was undertaken to evaluate the role of IL-5 in eosinophil migration and in the maintenance of eosinophilia in a guinea-pig model of visceral larva migrans syndrome. The results show that the infection of animals with Toxocara canis induced an early increase in serum IL-5 levels that might be essential for eosinophil differentiation and proliferation and for the development of eosinophilia. When infected guinea-pigs were treated with mAb anti-IL-5 (TRFK-5) given at the same time or 1 or 3 days after infection, there was a high percentage of reduction of eosinophil counts 18 days afte…

Visceral larva migrans: examinations by means of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay of human sera for antibodies to excretory-secretory antigens of the second-stage larvae of Toxocara canis.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is described for the detection of serum antibodies to visceral larva migrans (Toxocariasis). Excretory-secretory antigens of the second-stage larvae of Toxocara canis were used as antigen to coat the polystyrene plates. With sera from patients high antibody titers were observed in both ocular and visceral disorders. Cross-reactions due to other parasitic infections could be excluded, including other migrating larval infections such as ascariasis, trichinellosis, strongyloidiasis, filariasis, and anisakiasis. In a small seroepidemiologic survey of healthy pr…

First confirmation of the chicken eyeworm, Oxyspirura mansoni, as a causative pathogen of human cutaneous larva migrans by morphological and molecular evidence.

Human larva migrans is a zoonotic disease caused by larvae of various nematode species, with all previously confirmed pathogens originating from mammalian reservoirs. In 2020, a case series in Vietnam reported instances of cutaneous larva migrans caused by avian eyeworm larvae of the Oxyspirura genus. This nematode genus, belonging to the Thelaziidae family, includes 84 species that mainly parasitize the eyes of various bird species. They utilize different arthropod intermediate hosts, such as cockroaches, grasshoppers, and crickets, in their life cycle. Although the 18S sequences of the larva…

Recognition of Toxocara canis excretion-secretion antigens in the serum of children with epilepsy. Involvement in the diagnosis of visceral larva migrans.

Visceral larva migrans syndrome (VLM) is caused by L2 Toxocara canis. This parasitic disease is difficult to diagnose in humans, but specific antigen identification could allow for parasite detection. The aim of this study was to analyse antigens of different parasite developmental stages and observe their cross-reactions with antigens from other parasites to determine their importance in the diagnosis of VLM caused by T. canis. Sera from 14 children with cryptogenic epilepsy previously positive for T. canis were analysed via Western blot (WB) using T. canis excretion-secretion antigens (TESs)…
