Neonatal lead poisoning. An unusual clinical manifestation.

A case of lead encephalopathy in a 2-month-old child is reported. Modes of poisoning are discussed and the unusual clinical manifestations of metallic brownish discoloration of nails and subdural effusion are presented. The possibility of lead poisoning as a cause of convulsions in neonates should be considered by doctors caring for these patients. Detailed history of lead exposure in prenatal and postnatal periods aids in early diagnosis and treatment which, thus, prevent severe neurological sequelae.

Toxicology of lead: primer for analytical chemists.

Through the years, considerable amounts of Pb have been mobilized into our environment, and Pb may represent one of the most ubiquitous of all toxic metal contaminants. Excluding occupational exposure, the general population receives almost 70% of its total exposure to Pb from food. Other important sources of exposure include drinking water and air; minor sources include tobacco products, decorative glassware, and other types of food utensils. For young children, ingestion of Pb-containing soil or dust via normal hand-to-mouth activity or, in extreme cases, pica (the abnormal intake of soil, p

[Differential diagnostic value of the aVR lead].

The one-pole peripheral AVR lead reflects the changes in the electromotive power of the heart in a frontal plane in a reverse (mirror) image. In 620 subjects with healthy hearts, with the aid of an extended ECG method; the variants of the auricle-ventricle complex in AVR lead in norm and the separate heart positions, were studied. The pathologically changed P-wave was established to be presented by its typical forms (P-mitrale, P-pulmonale), but in a mirror image in AVR lead. The positive auricle wave in AVR is an important sign for the presence of right-auricular ectopic rhythm. In 80 patient…

MODIFIED LEAD FOR PERMANENT TRANSVENOUS CARDIAC PACING.

A modified pacemaker lead that can be inserted by percutaneous puncture of the subclavian vein, as in the Seldinger technique, has been designed for permanent cardiac pacing. Its use may be advantageous when isolation of an adequate vein for electrode insertion is difficult or impossible.

Suspected lead toxicosis in a bald eagle.

An immature bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) was submitted to the University of Maryland, College Park, for clinical examination. The bird was thin, had green watery feces, and was unable to maintain itself in upright posture. Following radiography, the bird went into respiratory distress and died. Numerous lead shot were recovered from the gizzard, and chemical analysis of liver and kidney tissue revealed 22.9 and 11.3 ppm lead, respectively. The clinical signs, necropsy findings, and chemical analysis of the eagle were compatible with lead toxicosis.

Lead poisoning in vitamin E-deficient rats.

Weanling male rats were fed either a vitamin E-deficient Torula yeast diet or the same diet supplemented with 100 ppm vitamin E for a period of 3 months. One group of animals fed each diet received 250 ppm lead in the drinking water, whereas another group of animals fed each diet received no lead in the water. Vitamin E deficiency per se had little or no effect on hematocrit value, reticulocyte count, spleen weight, or erythrocyte mechanical fragility in rats not poisoned with lead. On the other hand, the decreased hematocrit, increased reticulocyte count, and splenic enlargement due to lead p…

The anaemia of lead poisoning: a review.

Lead intoxication has been recognized as a clinical entity since ancient times. Hippocrates (370 B.C.) was probably the first person to associate lead with clinical symptoms, since when the harmful effects of lead on the body have been well documented. Early observations culminated in the brilliant monograph of Tanquerel des Planches (1839) in which the clinical aspects of the disease were completely outlined and most of the early signs of the disease were mentioned. So complete was this work that virtually nothing has been added to des Planches's observations since their publication. The earl…
