Fractionation of scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) venom and the impact of specific fractions on glutamate metabolism.

The fractionation of the venom of Indian red scorpion (Mesobuthus tamulus) was performed using CM-52 (carboxy methyl cellulose) ion-exchange chromatography. The toxic potential of these fractions were tested on lepidoptera larvae and mice. The CM-52 fractions, which showed toxicity were further used to study their impact on glutamate metabolism. The glutamate content increased and glutamine synthetase and glutamate decarboxylase activity levels were elevated in envenomated animals. The present results reveal that glutamine is rapidly metabolized to glutamate and gamma-aminiobutyric acid indica…

Calcium binding sites in the insect polytrophic egg vesicles as possible markers of the route of inflow of calcium.

Calcium binding sites were revealed in the polytropic egg vesicles of Galleria mellonella (Lepidoptera) by fixation of the ovariole with glutaraldehyde in the presence of excess of calcium. Calcium dependent deposits appeared in the mitochondrial matrix in cells of the epithelial sheath and of the follicular epithelium. The deposits were also seen in the extracellular space around the follicular epithelial cells and around the trophocytes , at the oolemma, and in the coated vesicles of the oocytes at the stage of vitellogenesis. On the other hand, the deposits were not detected in the mitochon…

Identification of Venom Proteins of the Indigenous Endoparasitoid Chouioia cunea (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae).

Chouioia cunea (Yang) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) is an indigenous pupal endoparasitoid that effectively attacks the exotic fall webworm Hyphantria cunea (Drury) (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) in China. In this novel association, the parasitoid's venom has played an important role in subduing the immune defense of the host although little is known about the composition and functions of the parasitoid's venom. We therefore first identified the parasitoid's major venom proteins using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Approximately 207 different proteins were identified from C. cunea's …

Perception of solar UVB radiation by phytophagous insects: behavioral responses and ecosystem implications.

Most of our present knowledge about the impacts of solar UVB radiation on terrestrial ecosystems comes from studies with plants. Recently, t … riments showed that soybean leaf consumption by the late-season soybean worm Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) was much less intense in leaves with even slight symptoms of an early thrips attack than in undamaged leaves. These experiments suggest that phytophagous insects can present direct and indirect behavioral responses to solar UVB. The indi …

Optimizing cold storage of Sitotroga cerealella eggs for the mass rearing of Trichogrammatoidea bactrae: Effects on reproductive performance of parent and progeny.

Improving effective cold storage techniques for maintaining factitious host eggs without adversely affecting their quality and the performance of emerged parasitoids is essential. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of different storage temperatures (-2 °C, 2 °C, 4 °C, and 8 °C) and durations (1-25 days) on the quality of Sitotroga cerealella Olivier (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) eggs and the reproductive performance of both parents and offspring of Trichogrammatoidea bactrae Nagaraja (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae). This parasitoid demonstrated the ability to parasitize cold-stored e…

The global invasion risk of rice yellow stem borer Scirpophaga incertulas Walker (Lepidoptera:Crambidae) under current and future climate scenarios.

Rice yellow stem borer, Scirpophaga incertulas (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) is a serious pest, that causes significant yield loss (10-40%) to rice crop in India and other parts of the world. This study emphasizes the prediction of the potential invasion risk, distribution, and further spread of S. incertulas during current and future climate change scenarios in India and the world. The pest identity was confirmed with morphological taxonomy, and the possible habitat distribution and further spread in future climate scenarios were modelled using the MaxEnt algorithm. The climate niche for …

Lyssa excreta: Defining parameters for fecal samples as a rabies virus surveillance method.

It is not possible to systematically screen the environment for rabies virus (RABV) using current approaches. We sought to determine under what conditions RABV is detectable from feces and other accessible samples from infected wildlife to broaden the number of biological samples that could be used to test for RABV. We employed a recently-developed quantitative RT-PCR assay called the "LN34 panlyssavirus real-time RT-PCR assay", which is highly sensitive and specific for all variants of RABV. We harvested and tested brain tissue, fecal, and/or mouth swab samples from 25 confirmed RABV positive

Quiescent caterpillar hair: A rare cause of localised lenticular opacity formation.

PURPOSE: To report a rare case of a 65 year old patient with a single caterpillar hair with localised lenticular opacity around it and no active inflammation. OBSERVATIONS: A single quiescent caterpillar hair embedded in the anterior lens capsule causing localised cataract around it. There was no other sign of ocular toxicosis and the patient was unaware of the presence of this intraocular foreign body. CONCLUSIONS: Caterpillar hair (also known as setae) are a common cause of ophthalmia nodosa. These setae can penetrate intraocularly with ease to cause various forms of ocular toxicosis rangi

[Itchy rash caused by the oak processionary caterpillar].

BACKGROUND As a result of climate change, we will have to deal more and more often with the consequences of the oak processionary caterpillar. CASE DESCRIPTION In June, we saw a 6-year-old girl with a severely itchy rash all over her body. The rash had developed a day after school and consisted of erythematous papules on an erythematous base. Several other children at the school were suffering from a similar skin rash. The girl also seemed to have a bad cold. We diagnosed 'oak processionary caterpillar dermatitis'. It turned out there was indeed an oak processionary caterpillar nest at her sch

Stink bug predator kills prey with salivary non-proteinaceous compounds.

Podisus nigrispinus Dallas (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is a predator insect with potential applications in biological control because both nymphs and adults have been shown to prey on other insect pests by injection of toxic salivary gland contents. This study identified non-proteinaceous compounds with insecticidal activity from the saliva of P. nigrispinus in Anticarsia gemmatalis. In particular, the ether extract from P. nigrispinus saliva led to mortality in A. gemmatalis larvae, with a LC50 = 2.04 μL and LC90 = 3.27 μL. N,N-dimethylaniline and 1,2,5-trithiepane fractions were identified as

Galleria mellonella as a model host to study gut microbe homeostasis and brain infection by the human pathogen listeria monocytogenes.

The gastrointestinal tract in both mammals and insects is associated with microbes (collectively the microbiota), which are controlled by the intestinal immune system. These microbes regulate pathogens that can infect gut epithelial cells, and there is increasing evidence for a reciprocal relationship between beneficial and pathogenic bacteria in the gut and the intestinal immune system. Deciphering these complex interactions between the microbiota and intestinal immune system in mammals requires surrogate model systems, such as larvae of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella. The exposure

[Keratitis due to caterpillar of Pseudosphinx tetrio hairs].

A case of keratitis due to caterpillar hairs of the Pseudosphinx tetrio is reported. As he was clearing his garden without glasses or a protective headgear, the patient felt left ocular pain due to the projection of a caterpillar into the eye. On examination, there were numerous intrastromal caterpillar hairs involving the inferior temporal quadrant of the cornea. The small size of the hairs prevented removal with forceps. The patient was treated by extensive washing of the eyeball and topical application of anti-inflammatory drugs, cycloplegics and antibiotics. The caterpillar hairs gradually

An unusual virus from the parasitic wasp Cotesia melanoscela.

Certain strains of the braconid parasitoid Cotesia melanoscela carry two different viruses within their ovaries, one of which (here designated CmV2) is apparently not a polydnavirus. Virus replication occurs in the ovarian calyx and in some other tissues of both male and female parasitoids; as yet, no replication has been observed in the testis, however. In addition, CmV2 is one of only two parasitoid viruses known to replicate in host insect larvae, and we not show that this virus is also capable of replicating in vitro; the virus is nevertheless nonpathogenic for gypsy moth larvae. The virus

Evidence for histamine in the urticating hairs of Hylesia moths.

An urticarial dermatosis after contact with the urticating hairs of the adult female Hylesia moth may occur by several mechanisms including the intradermal injection of inflammatory mediators through the urticating hairs. Extracts were prepared from whole moths, urticating hairs, and other moth parts. Each of these extracts was subjected to a radioenzyme assay for histamine. Histamine was present in extracts made from whole moths and from urticating hairs. Extracts made from other moth parts contained no histamine. Cutaneous wheals occurred after intradermal injections of histamine and various

Evaluation of gossyplure, compared with hexalure, for monitoring pink bollworm infestations in cotton fields of Israel.

Gossyplure used to bait field traps at a dose of 50 micrograms admixed with 4-16 milligrams of an antioxidant attracted and captured male pink bollworm moths early in the cotton-growing season (early May) in Israel, whereas 20 milligrams of hexalure plus antioxidant was completely inactive under identical conditions. Although gossyplure without antioxidant was inactivated through decomposition within ten days, the mixtures remained attractive for at least two months; the antioxidant also increased moth catches 2.5 fold. Monitoring data obtained with 3000 gossyplure-baited traps, at one trap pe
