Twenty-eight patients who had reconstructions of the anterior cruciate ligament with a ligament augmentation device in the semitendinosus and gracilis tendons were compared with 32 patients who had reconstructions with semitendinosus and gracilis tendons alone. Preoperatively, there was no significant difference between the 2 groups with respect to age, sex, Tegner activity level, and time from injury to operation. Mean postoperative followup was 31.4 months for the augmentation group and 32.3 months for the nonaugmentation group. At postoperative evaluation, there was no difference in the 2 g

To examine the effects of direct electric current on ligament healing in rabbits, a full-thickness defect of the patellar ligament was electrically stimulated for time periods of up to seven weeks. The rabbits were randomly assigned to biomechanical and biochemical studies, and healing was evaluated by these parameters. Electrical stimulation was shown to restore tensile stiffness in a short period of time and to decrease the relative proportion of Type III collagen more rapidly than in the control group. However, electrical stimulation did not change the collagen content of newly formed tissu

A ligament advanced reinforcement system (LARS) artificial ligament has been proposed for use in anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction in some cases, and an emerging body of reports has shown its success in the short term. However, there are great concerns about the potential risks of complications, which might prevent its extensive use. We report a rare case of serious synovitis 3 years postoperatively in a 26-year-old man who underwent LARS artificial ligament reconstruction. During revision arthroscopy, we observed a large amount of synovial hyperplasia in the knee joint, containing a l

An ossified left petroclinoid ligament was found during routine dissection of the skull base in an adult male cadaver. The petroclinoid ligament is clinically and surgically important given its anatomical relationships to cranial nerves III, V, and VI, so its ossification is a risk factor for injuries due to trauma, increased intracranial pressure, and vascular and tumor compression resulting in abducens and oculomotor palsies. The causes of petroclinoid ligament ossification are yet to be completely elucidated although several reports have associated them with age-related and physiological pr

Lunotriquetral (LT) ligament injuries are uncommon, however, should be considered in patients with ulnar-sided wrist pain. LT injuries are often associated with other injuries but can occur in isolation. Understanding the anatomy and pathomechanics will aid in making the diagnosis. Similar to other injuries, a thorough history and focused physical examination is critical. Radiographs may show normal findings; however, advanced imaging can support the diagnosis. Arthroscopy remains the gold standard for diagnosis. Most patients do well with conservative management; however, injury acuity and se

The crucial role of the spring ligament complex within the pathologic process that leads to flatfoot deformity has evolved recently. There has been improvement in the anatomic knowledge of the spring ligament and understanding of its complex relationship to the deltoid complex and outstanding advances in biomechanics concepts related to the spring ligament. Optimization of flatfoot treatment strategies are focused on a renewed interest in the spring ligament and medial soft tissue reconstruction in concert with bony correction to obtain an adequate reduction of the talonavicular deformity and

The distal radioulnar joint, the triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) and the wrist are stabilized by many ligaments allowing not only a wide range of motion but also providing sufficient stability. The complex arrangement of carpal ligaments and prosupination around the forearm joint enables multiaxial motion patterns. In the wrist, intra-articular ligaments can be differentiated from extra-articular capsular ligaments as well as intrinsic and extrinsic ligament courses. Imaging is essential for classification of dynamic and static instability patterns. This review article illustrates the…

MRI and ultrasound are now widely used for the assessment of tendon and ligament abnormalities. Healthy tendons and ligaments contain high levels of collagen with a structured orientation, which gives rise to their characteristic normal imaging appearances as well as causing particular imaging artefacts. Changes to ligaments and tendons as a result of disease and injury can be demonstrated using both ultrasound and MRI. These have been validated against surgical and histological findings. Novel imaging techniques are being developed that may improve the ability of MRI and ultrasound to assess …

The meniscofibular ligament is an anatomically defined ligament of the knee in humans. However, there are no data regarding the prognosis following injury to this ligament. Our case was a 42-year-old man who presented at our clinic with pain of the lateral side of his left knee. MRI of his left knee revealed the rupture of the meniscofibular ligament. The mechanism of injury was consistent with anatomical and mechanical studies of the meniscofibular ligament. The patient was treated conservatively for 1 year, but his pain did not resolve completely. A case series of patients with the same inju

Like no other joint of the human body the knee depends on intact ligaments. Knee instability due to ligament injuries will cause abnormal joint kinematics, and thereby is made responsible for secondary damage to other important knee joint structures. Diagnosis of knee ligament injuries is based on the detailed history with often typical injury patterns, as well as on the physical examination with specific knee ligament tests. In addition radiological evaluation is used. The range of knee ligament injuries is wide. Beginning with an isolated medial collateral ligament rupture which will heal wi…

INTRODUCTION: Leiomyosarcoma of the broad ligament is an extremely rare malignant tumor, with only 13 cases reported.
OBSERVATION: A 52 year-old woman consulted for pelvic pain and metrorrhagia. Clinical examination revealed a multinodular mass on the right side of the uterus. Pelvic ultrasound revealed a heterogeneous mass. Laparotomy found a malignant tumor arising from the right broad ligament. It was independent from the proximity organs. Treatment consisted in resection and total hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The histologic examination led to the diagnosis of leiomyo

Carpal ligament instabilities are conditions in which the individual carpal bones have become unstable due to abnormal ligament support. Early diagnosis of ligamentous wrist instabilities is important because late diagnosis or failed diagnosis may lead to severe complications such as osteoarthritis. This article reviews the most common ligamentous instability patterns of the wrist and focuses on how to perform and obtain radiograms which will allow reliable diagnosis of wrist instabilities.

Wrist injuries occur commonly. Significant wrist injuries such as perilunate dislocation and scapholunate dissociation may occur without carpal bone fracture. The emergency physician can recognize these ligamentous wrist injuries by noting abnormalities of the shapes, joint spaces, and alignments of the carpal bones. Early diagnosis allows for prompt referral and optimal outcome.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Spondylolysis of the lower lumbar vertebrae is a non-united childhood fracture of the arch of the vertebra, persisting into adult life. Symptoms of disabling low back pain appear in a minority of patients, usually for the first time in adulthood. This pain is considered to arise from several separate sources, one of which may be the spondylolysis ligament.
STUDY DESIGN: The innervation of the ligament has been investigated immunohistochemically.
METHODS: Specimens from eight patients were divided longitudinally for histology including hematoxylin and eosin, toluid

The authors report a rare case where a pheochromocytoma which was not in the adrenal gland occurred in the broad ligament. A review of the literature resulted in only three published cases being found. When the symptomatology suggests that there may be a pheochromocytoma in the body one has to research where it is sited and one has to think of such a possibility if a tumour in the broad ligament is found during an operation, so that the risks of operating on these tumours can be lessened.

Extraspinal ependymomas have been described in the subcutaneous sacrococcygeal and presacral areas. Since 1984, eight pelvic ependymomas have been reported that have originated in the ovary, broad ligament, mesovarium, and omentum. This report documents an additional case arising from the right uterosacral ligament in a 48-year-old woman. The diagnosis of ependymoma was supported by a histologic pattern of true rosettes and pseudo-rosettes, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positivity, and electron microscopic findings of cilia, blepharoplasts, and intermediate filaments. The tumor was po
