Cancer incidence and mortality trends in young adults in Metropolitan Lima young adults, 1990-2012.

AIMS: The purpose of this research was to calculate and compare standardised incidence and mortality ratios in young adults, based on the data published by the population-based cancer registry of Metropolitan Lima. METHOD: A secondary analysis was carried out on the data published by the population-based cancer registry of Metropolitan Lima in its last five volumes. Calculating the standardised incidence ratio, in accordance with the World Health Organization's standard population, was done using the direct method, and the annual percentage change was calculated using the Joinpoint Regression

Association between public health policies on alcohol and worldwide cancer, liver disease and cardiovascular disease outcomes.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The long-term impact of alcohol-related public health policies (PHPs) on disease burden is unclear. We aimed to assess the association between alcohol-related PHPs and alcohol-related health consequences. METHODS: We conducted an ecological multi-national study including 169 countries. We collected data on alcohol-related PHPs from the WHO Global Information System of Alcohol and Health 2010. Data on alcohol-related health consequences between 2010-2019 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease database. We classified PHPs into five items, including criteria for low,

A Symptomatic Mucinous Cystic Neoplasm of the Mesentery: A Case Report.

Mucinous cystic neoplasms (MCNs) are rare tumors primarily observed in the pancreas but occasionally found in other locations such as the retroperitoneum, ovary, liver, and spleen. These neoplasms are histologically classified based on the degree of dysplasia, with some associated with invasive carcinoma. Colorectal surgeons infrequently encounter MCNs. Mesenteric MCNs pose a diagnostic challenge secondary to their atypical location, subtle histology, and lack of specific biochemical markers. In this context, we present a case involving a 68-year-old female who initially presented with an assu

Adult-onset multifocal kaposiform hemangioendothelioma in the bone marrow, lung, liver, and brain: a case report.

Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE), a rare form of vascular neoplasm, is typically seen in children. In this paper, we report a unique case of KHE replacing bone marrow tissue mimicking myeloproliferative neoplasm with additional involvement in the lung, liver, and brain in a 60-year-old Caucasian woman. The patient was initially seen in the hematology department for the chief complaint of epigastric pain and anemia. Abdominal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed mild splenomegaly with iron deposition secondary to extramedullary hematopoiesis. Additional workup was inconclusive. Subseq

Current status of surgical management of patients with gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms.

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) of the gastroenteropancreatic system are rare and heterogeneous tumours, yet with increasing prevalence. The most frequent primary sites are the small intestine, rectum, pancreas, and stomach. For a localized disease, surgical resection with local lymph nodes is usually curative with good overall and disease free survival. More complex situation is the treatment of locally advanced lesions, liver metastases, and, surprisingly, small asymptomatic tumours of the rectum and pancreas. In this review, we focus on the current role of surgical management of gastroenter

Cholangiocarcinoma associated with liver fluke infection: a preventable source of morbidity in Asian immigrants.

In the Far East infection with the liver flukes Clonorchis sinensis and Opisthorchis viverrini is the most frequently documented cause of cholangiocarcinoma. Liver fluke infection in the United States remains a health problem for more than 500,000 Southeast Asian refugees who have immigrated to this country since 1975. Recent surveys have revealed that up to 26% of Asian immigrants have an active liver fluke infection. However, the common clinical manifestations of this condition, as well as the possibility of developing such long-term sequelae as cholangiocarcinoma, remain unknown to many phy

[How can the number of liver transplantations be increased?].

The number of patients suitable for liver transplantation is progressively increasing due to the excellent results achieved with this procedure, giving rise to a growing imbalance in the number of candidates on the waiting list and the number of donors. This situation has prompted transplant teams to search for alternatives to increase the number of liver grafts. On the one hand, the criteria for donation have been broadened to include donors with advanced age, liver steatosis, hepatitis B and C viruses, neoplasms, and benign underlying diseases. On the other hand, new transplant techniques ha

CT in lobar atrophy of the liver caused by alveolar echinococcosis.

We reviewed the CT findings of 13 patients with histologically proved alveolar echinococcosis of the liver. Seven of these patients had hilar involvement, which caused dilatation of intrahepatic bile ducts and invasion of the portal vein or portal branches. In two of these patients we found marked atrophy of the right lobe and in one patient marked atrophy of the left lobe in addition to various CT findings previously reported for alveolar echinococcosis of the liver. The occurrence of lobar atrophy of the liver caused by alveolar echinococcosis has not been previously reported. We concluded t

Carcinoid syndrome. Radiology.

The carcinoid syndrome is usually produced by an ileal carcinoid tumour that has metastasized to the liver but can also be caused by similar tumours in many other organs. These neoplasms create a variety of radiological appearances which are often characteristic. In recent years percutaneous embolization of hepatic carcinoid metastases has been successfully employed as part of the treatment of the syndrome.

A case, is reported of a 40 year-old woman with a "form fruste" of tuberous sclerosis, multiple angiomyolipomas of the kidney, and an angiomyolipoma of the liver. On magnetic resonance imaging the hepatic mass was markedly hyperintense to liver on short TR/short TE spin-echo sequence. Spiral computed tomography during arterial portography showed hepatic mass in the right hemiliver with areas of negative attenuation values suggesting fat content. Pathologic examination of the resected specimen confirmed the diagnosis of an angiomyolipoma of the liver. Computed tomography during arterial portogr

Malignant PEComa of the adrenal gland.

Perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasms, also known as PEComas, are unique mesenchymal tumors exhibiting perivascular epithelioid cell differentiation, characterized by a mixed myogenic and melanocytic phenotype. PEComas arising in visceral organs outside of the kidney, liver, and lung are rare, and often pose problems in diagnosis. Examples of this neoplasm originating in the adrenal gland are limited. The present report details the clinical and pathologic features of an unusual case of a pure epithelioid PEComa (epithelioid angiomyolipoma) of the adrenal gland exhibiting clinically malignant

CT features of abdominal plasma cell neoplasms.

The aim of this study was to describe the CT features of abdominal plasma cell neoplasms. We reviewed CT imaging findings in 11 patients (seven men, four women; mean age 62 years) with plasma cell neoplasms and abdominal involvement. Helical CT of the entire abdomen and pelvis was performed following intravenous administration of contrast material. Images were analyzed in consensus by two radiologists. Diagnoses were made from biopsy, surgery and/or clinical follow-up findings. Multiple myeloma was found in seven patients and extramedullary plasmacytoma in four patients. All patients with mult

Two Pituitary Neuroendocrine Tumors (PitNETs) with Very High Proliferation and TP53 Mutation - High-Grade PitNET or PitNEC?

We report two pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs) with very high Ki67 labeling indices, many mitoses and TP53 mutation (nearly all tumor cell nuclei were positive for p53). One of the tumors had bone and liver metastases. One was a corticotroph cell tumor; the other was a lactotroph tumor. The classification of these tumors is the subject of this discussion. Traditionally, pituitary carcinomas are only diagnosed by demonstration of metastases according to the 2017 WHO classification. In contrast, neuroendocrine neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas are classified as either

One case of common bile duct cancer mimicking cystic neoplasm of the pancreas, arising 9 years after excision of a choledochal cyst.

A 42-years-old woman had undergone operation for cholecochal cyst with gallbladder cancer 9 years ago. Pathology revealed a polypoid mass in the gallbladder with liver infiltration as poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography, and endoscopic ultrasound showed a newly developed suspected solid nodule in the peripheral portion of cystic lesion in the pancreas head. She underwent a pylorus preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy for the suspected mucinous cystic neoplasm of the pancreas. Pathology revealed poorly differentiated adenocarcinom

Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis is associated with a higher risk of advanced colorectal neoplasm.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is known to increase the risk of adenomatous colonic polyps. However, the role of screening colonoscopy in patients with biopsy-proven NAFLD in detecting advanced colorectal neoplasm is not clearly evidence-based. Therefore, we investigated whether the histological severity of NAFLD is associated with advanced colorectal neoplasm. METHODS: This study included patients ≥18 years old who underwent screening colonoscopy between 2013 and 2018 within a biopsy-evaluated prospective NAFLD cohort. Advanced colorectal neoplasm was defined as

Expression of liver and placental alkaline phosphatases in Chang liver cells.

This paper presents evidence that a protein characteristic of differentiated liver cells, liver alkaline phosphatase is synthesized by the Chang liver cell line. Liver alkaline phosphatase was demonstrated by immunochemical assay, 32P-labeling and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, immunofluorescence microscopy, and the fluorescence-activated cell sorter. The synthesis of the liver enzyme by the Chang liver cells is interpreted to indicate fidelity of the Chang cells to their origin from human liver tissue. Chang liver cells also synthesize a phosphatase which is similar if not indentical to

Caroli's disease misdiagnosed as intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct.

Caroli's disease is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder caused by malformation of the ductal plate during embryonic development. Although it is present at birth, Caroli's disease is typically not diagnosed until between the second and fourth decades of life, as it was in the present patient. Here we report a rare case of Caroli's disease limited to one liver segment, which was initially misdiagnosed as an intraductal papillary neoplasm of the bile duct. The asymptomatic patient was treated with liver segmentectomy.

Fine needle aspiration cytology in extramedullary plasmacytoma.

OBJECTIVE: Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell neoplasm. It can occur as the sole manifestation of plasma cell neoplasm, as a metastasis from another extramedullary plasmacytoma, as a solitary plasmacytoma of the bone or as a consequence of multiple myeloma. These plasma cell tumors can occur anywhere and have to be differentiated from other neoplasms, infectious processes and chloroma. STUDY DESIGN: We report the findings of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in 18 patients with extramedullary plasmacytoma. In six patients extramedullary plasmacytoma was the initial present
