Adenosine deaminase (ADA) activities in sera, lymphocytes and granulocytes in patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis were investigated and compared with control groups. Fifty patients and 50 healthy individuals were studied. The clinical diagnosis was parasitologically confirmed by culture and Giemsa stain. ADA activities were measured by colorimetric method. Choriocarcinoma cells (CC) in vitro are resistant to NK lysis but sensitive to lysis by blood or decidual effectors activated by interleukin-2 (IL-2). Thirty-one patients (pts) with aplastic anaemia (AA) were studied whose probable etiology were: idiopathic (16 pts), nocturnal aroxysmal haemoglobinuria (NPH) (2 pts), benzene (4 pts), agrotoxics (5 pts), pharmaceutical drugs (2 pts) and insecticides (2 pts). To elucidate the mechanisms of autoantibody induction in infectious mononucleosis (IM), we have studied sera from 35 patients with IM with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays using purified antigens. Chronic lymphocytic leukemic B cells (B-CLL) were found to produce an IL 1-like growth factor spontaneously in vitro for mouse thymocytes. The mitogenicity of 12-O-tetradecanoyl phorbol-13-acetate (TPA) for normal human peripheral blood mononuclear cells was investigated.
