A New Approach for Reconstruction of Severe Horizontal Atrophy of the Posterior Mandible Using "The Honeycomb Technique": A 10-14 Year Follow-Up Retrospective Study.

Background: Autogenous bone grafting has long been the standard for augmenting bone prior to implant placement in atrophic ridges. However, innovative techniques are continually sought to enhance outcomes. This study introduces the honeycomb technique for horizontal bone augmentation in edentulous posterior mandibular ridges, presenting the methodology and long-term follow-up results of this novel approach. Methods: This study includes healthy patients with moderate to severe horizontal atrophy in posterior mandibular regions who underwent bone augmentation using the honeycomb technique and we

Effect of fibula length on peri-implant resorption after segmental mandibulectomy of ameloblastoma and dental rehabilitation.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Segmental mandibulectomy followed by microvascularized free fibular flap (FFF) reconstruction and dental implant rehabilitation is a standard treatment for ameloblastoma. However, data on the length of the microvascularized FFF related to long-term peri-implant bone level change are sparse. PURPOSE: The purpose of this retrospective clinical study was to investigate the impact of microvascularized FFF length on the peri-implant bone resorption indicated by changes in the crown-to-implant (C/I) ratio after 10 years of functional loading. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of

Can Patients With Metal Hypersensitivity Requiring TMJ Total Joint Prostheses be Successfully Treated With All-Titanium Alloy Mandibular Components?

PURPOSE: Patients with documented metal hypersensitivity to cobalt-chromium-molybdenum (CoCrMo) alloy with trace nickel requiring temporomandibular joint (TMJ) total joint prosthesis (TJP) may have adverse reactions to the metals in the standard TMJ Concepts TJP. This study aimed to determine if these patients can be successfully treated by eliminating CoCrMo alloy and constructing the mandibular components of all-titanium (Ti) alloy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study evaluated metal hypersensitive patients (MHG) that received the TMJ Concepts TJP modification of all-Ti al

Implementing 3D-printed indexing devices and contemporary scanning techniques for complete-arch implant-supported rehabilitations: A clinical case report.

A sixty-eight-year-old male presented to the dental clinic seeking a complete mouth rehabilitation. He exhibited generalized dental caries, dental staining, cervical lesions, fremitus, and anterior wear. After declining tooth-retaining options, he elected full-mouth extractions with immediately loaded implant-supported prostheses. A hybrid workflow, incorporating both digital and conventional steps, was used to plan treatment. The cone-beam computed tomography-derived anatomical data were integrated with the articulated diagnostic casts using a custom three‑dimensional (3D)-printed hexagonal i

Radiographic Evaluation of Crestal Bone Loss in Pre-loading and Post-loading States of Endosteal Implants in Maxilla and Mandible- A prospective study.

Background Peri-implant tissue integrity depends upon healthy peri-implant mucosa and bone. The crestal bone is one of the governing factors for successful implant therapy both functionally and esthetically. There are limited radiographic studies in Nepalese population for determination of crestal bone loss around peri-implant area comparing the bone loss at pre- and post-loading state. Objective To evaluate the bone loss in mesial and distal, maxilla and mandible before and after the implant supported prosthesis delivery. Method A 6-months prospective study was planned and conducted in 26 end

Treatment of painful post-traumatic peripheral neuropathy with capsaicin in an edentulous patient with extreme resorption in the mental region: a case report.

AIM: The aim of this report is to present a clinical case of extensive alveolar resorption in the mental region of the mandible of a complete denture wearer for which capsaicin was used for alleviation and remission of post-traumatic painful peripheral neuropathy. BACKGROUND: Resorption of the residual ridge occurs in a chronic and progressive manner, altering the configuration of the ridge and the mucosa covering it and subsequently compromising the stability of the complete denture prosthesis. Individual variability associated with such factors as gender, age, edentulous period, nutrition,

Veterans Administration Cooperative Dental Implant Study--comparisons between fixed partial dentures supported by blade-vent implants and removable partial dentures. Part IV: Comparisons of patient satisfaction between two treatment modalities.

This study compares treatment assessments made by two groups of patients with Kennedy class I or class II mandibular edentulous conditions, who received either a removable partial denture (RPD) (N = 115) or one or two fixed partial dentures (FPDs), each supported distally by a blade implant (N = 113). Two questionnaires were administered, one at 16 weeks after the implant or RPD insertion and at the 6-month interval and the other at 18, 36, and 60 months. Marked functional improvements were perceived by a large majority of patients in both groups after the insertion of prosthesis. At 6 months,

Al-enhanced Dynamic Virtual Patient Workflow for Full-arch Implant Rehabilitation.

Accurately recording implant positions and maxillomandibular relationships in completely edentulous patients for the fabrication of fixed implant-supported immediate prostheses presents a challenge. This study aimed to introduce a fully digital workflow incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) technology and a dynamic virtual patient to create a screw-retained, full-arch implant-supported prosthesis for a completely edentulous patient. Virtual surgical planning was conducted using digital software (3Shape dental system, 3Shape, Copenhagen, Denmark) that integrates intraoral mucosal informati

Dental Rehabilitation After Microvascular Reconstruction of Segmental Jaw Defects: A Ten-Year Follow-Up.

Background/Objectives: Defects in maxillary and mandibular continuity are common in maxillofacial practice. They can occur after trauma, osteonecrosis, congenital jaw deformities, or surgical resection of benign or malignant tumours. Reconstruction with microvascular bone flaps and subsequent prosthetic rehabilitation is considered the contemporary first line treatment. This study assessed the extent to which the underlying disease influences the treatment course of microvascular segmental jaw reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from all patients who

[Osteoradionecrosis and dental implants].

INTRODUCTION: Osteoradionecrosis (ORN) is a severe complication of radiation therapy (RT). A triggering factor is frequently present. It is often a dental, periodental, or surgical traumatism. We report the case of a bilateral ORN: the first lesion appeared 3months after the end of RT around the osteosynthesis plate and was treated by mandibular resection. The second lesion appeared 40months after RT on the opposite side, due to peri-implantitis. Dental implants had been inserted 10years before cancer therapy. No case of ORN in post-implantation RT had been previously reported. CASE REPORT: A

Straight-segment mandibulectomy: a reproducible porcine mandibular critical-size defect model.

Porcine mandibular defect models are commonly used for the preclinical evaluation of reconstruction techniques. Existing studies vary in technique, complexity, and postoperative outcomes. The procedures are complex and often described without sufficient detail. We describe in detail a simple and reproducible method for creating a critical-size mandibular defect in a porcine model. Seven hemimandibular critical size defects were created in five male Yorkshire-Landrace pigs, three with unilateral defects and two with bilateral defects. A transverse incision was made over the mandibular body. Per

Long-term management of a child with regional odontodysplasia: a case report.

Regional odontodysplasia, or "ghost teeth," is a dental abnormality derived from both epithelial and mesenchymal components of the tooth bud. Teeth within a particular quadrant are affected. Affected teeth usually have thin enamel and dentin of poor quality with shortened roots, open apices, or enlarged pulp chambers. The permanent teeth and maxillary arch are observed to be more severely affected than primary teeth and the mandibular arch (ratio=1.6:1), respectively. Eruption of the affected teeth is delayed or may not happen. The cause of the phenomenon is unknown. Since this problem affects

Four impacted permanent canines: an unusual case.

Impacted permanent canines in a child, particularly in the maxilla, pose a functional as well as an esthetic concern for the patient and parents alike. Informing the parties involved that all the permanent canines are impacted is, needless to say, a distressful dilemma for the parents and a unique challenge for the orthodontist. The response to the treatment in this case was quite acceptable. All 4 canines were properly aligned with the aid of orthodontic traction and surgical assistance, and now the patient possesses confidence to smile and has enhanced self-esteem. There is no additional cos

Prosthodontic treatment for patients with large mandibular defects; porous hydroxyapatite grafts.

It is difficult for both prosthodontists and their patients with large marginal defects to achieve a satisfactory prosthodontic result, because retention, support, and stability of the prosthesis are limited and recovery of esthetics is unsatisfactory owing to large mandibular defects. Alveolar ridge augmentation therapy is performed to compensate for such problems. We have experienced a good prognosis of prosthodontic treatment for over 10 years in two patients with large marginal defects of the partially edentulous mandible, who had undergone grafting of porous hydroxyapatite blocks to their

Validation of a novel implant-retained fiducial marker system for digital scan alignment in the edentulous mandible: An accuracy study.

PURPOSE: This study validated the alignment accuracy of a novel implant-retained fiducial marker system for aligning digital scans in edentulous mandibles MATERIALS AND METHODS: A mandibular master cast with four implant analogs was fabricated. A reference scan of scan bodies (attached to analogs via spherical fiducial markers) was captured using a calibrated desktop scanner with a fixed-position jig. Without moving the cast, scan bodies were replaced with a milled interim prosthesis (using the same fiducial markers) and rescanned to ensure perfect spatial correspondence. The scan body assembl
