Many patients with low back pain demonstrate pelvic symptomatology attributable to lower sacral nerve root compression. Lower sacral nerve root compression has been identified as a cause of pelvic pain and pelvic organ dysfunction. Pelvic symptomatology secondary to lower sacral nerve root compression is given. Lower sacral nerve root compression is most commonly the result of lumbosacral disc lesion. A case of low back pain accompanied with pelvic symptomatology is presented along with its response to distractive manipulation. chiropractic treatment may be an effective means of treating pelvi

Spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) is commonly used as an effective therapeutic modality for a range of cervical symptoms. However, in rare cases, cervical manipulation may be associated with complications. In this review we present a series of cases with cervical spine injury and myelopathy following therapeutic manipulation of the neck, and examine their clinical course and neurological outcome. We conducted a search for patients who developed neurological symptoms due to cervical spinal cord injury following neck SMT in the database of a spinal unit in a tertiary hospital between the years 2

Upton and McComas first proposed the existence of the "double crush syndrome." Their hypothesis was that neural function could be impaired when single axons, having been compressed in one region, become especially susceptible to damage in another. A case report of a man with both cervical radiculopathy and carpal tunnel syndrome, i.e., "double crush syndrome" is presented. Conservative management consisting of chiropractic manipulative therapy as well as ultrasound, electrical nerve stimulation, traction and a wrist splint is outlined. The experimental basis, clinical evidence, etiology, sympt

A cervical rib, or supernumerary (extra) rib arising from the 7th cervical vertebra, is a congenital abnormality that occurs in less than 1% of the population. Clinically, it can cause obscure nervous or vascular symptoms and be difficult to diagnose. In this rare case, a 37-year-old woman developed a subclavian artery occlusion after undergoing a chiropractic manipulation for neck, shoulder, and arm pain. The occlusion led to multiple cerebellar infarcts, frontal subarachnoid hemorrhage, myocardial infarction, and right-hand vascular compromise. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with a 7

Existing investigations of cervical hearing disorders have been carried out predominantly in patients in whom those with vertebrobasilar insufficiencies (VBI) could not be distinguished from patients suffering from functional deficit of the upper cervical spine. Since two different syndromes exist, no statement can be made about cervical hearing disorders. That deafness can occur in VBI is uncontested. In contrast, there remains a dispute whether a "vertebragenic hearing disorder" exists. This latter disorder is believed accompanied by tinnitus, a feeling of ear pressure, otalgia and deafness

This case report discusses the treatment of brachioradial pruritus (BRP) in a 57-year-old white male veteran with chiropractic and acupuncture. The patient presented with findings consistent with a diagnosis of BRP to include sharp pain, burning, and itching at the bilateral upper extremities over the C5 and C6 dermatomes with acquired excoriations over the affected regions. The only known palliative measure was applying icepacks. Plain film radiographs revealed mild degenerative change at the C4-C5 and C5-C6 levels and postural evaluation observed anterior head carriage with forward-rounded s

Fluoroquinolone medications have been shown to contribute to tendinopathies, cardiotoxicity, and neurotoxicity. Low back pain is a common musculoskeletal condition for which chiropractic treatment is most often sought. This case report details a patient presenting with low back pain and a history of fluoroquinolone toxicity. The patient was initially treated with chiropractic manipulation, which increased her symptoms. She was then referred to an osteopathic physician who treated the patient with intravenous antioxidants and amino acids, an elimination diet, and probiotic supplementation. With

There are multiple reports in the literature of serious and at times fatal complications after cervical spine manipulation therapy (CSMT), even though CSMT is considered by some health providers to be an effective and safe therapeutic procedure for head and neck pain syndromes. We report a case of a young female with cervicalgia and headache with fatal posterior circulation cerebrovascular accident after CSMT. Serious complications are infrequent, with a reported incidence between one per 100,000 to one in 2 million manipulations. The most frequent injuries involve artery dissection or spasm.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the chiropractic care of a pediatric patient with complaints associated with myasthenia gravis. Clinical features A 2-year-old girl was provided chiropractic care at the request and consent of her parents for complaints of ptosis and generalized muscle weakness (ie, lethargy), particularly in the lower extremities. Prior to entry into chiropractic management, magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and acetylcholine receptor antibody tests were performed with negative results. However, the Tensilon test was positive and the diagnosis of myasthenia gravis was made by a pe

OBJECTIVE: To present a new theoretical construct, the Minimum Energy Hypothesis, which explains structural changes observed in the spine concomitant to spinal joint fixation resolution in initial investigations.
DESIGN: Theoretical analysis.
HYPOTHESIS: A unified theory of manipulative effectiveness is proposed that integrates the fixation and sensory tonus models of manipulation. The theory is based on the fact that the spine will assume a position of minimum internal energy when mechanical equilibrium is achieved. By using a simple mathematical model, it is shown that the fixation model a
