Transcranial direct current stimulation of the posterior parietal cortex modulates arithmetic learning.

The successful acquisition of arithmetic skills is an essential step in the development of mathematical competencies and has been associated with neural activity in the left posterior parietal cortex (PPC). It is unclear, however, whether this brain region plays a causal role in arithmetic skill acquisition and whether arithmetic learning can be modulated by means of non-invasive brain stimulation of this key region. In the present study we addressed these questions by applying transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the left PPC during a short-term training that simulates the typi

The coexistence or replacement of two subtypes of influenza.

A pandemic subtype of influenza A sometimes replaces but sometimes coexists with the previous seasonal subtype. For example, the 1957 pandemic subtype H2N2 replaced the seasonal subtype H1N1; whereas after 1977 subtypes H1N1 (from the pandemic) and H3N2 continue to coexist. In an attempt to understand these alternatives, a hybrid model for the dynamics of influenza A is formulated. During an epidemic season the model takes into account cross-immunity of strains depending on the most recent seasonal infection. This cross-immunity reduces susceptibility to related strains of the seasonal subtype

Dynamics of Multi-stage Infections on Networks.

This paper investigates the dynamics of infectious diseases with a non-exponentially distributed infectious period. This is achieved by considering a multi-stage infection model on networks. Using pairwise approximation with a standard closure, a number of important characteristics of disease dynamics are derived analytically, including the final size of an epidemic and a threshold for epidemic outbreaks, and it is shown how these quantities depend on disease characteristics, as well as the number of disease stages. Stochastic simulations of dynamics on networks are performed and compared to o

Interaction between articulatory gestures and inner speech in a counting task.

Interaction between covert and overt orofacial gestures has been poorly studied apart from old and rather qualitative experiments. The question deserves special interest in the context of the debate between auditory and motor theories of speech perception, where dual tasks may be of great interest. It is shown here that dynamic mandible and lips movement produced by a participant result in strong and stable perturbations to an inner speech counting task that has to be realized at the same time, while static orofacial configurations and static or dynamic manual actions produce no perturbation.

Mathematical analysis of multiscale models for hepatitis C virus dynamics under therapy with direct-acting antiviral agents.

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection remains a world-wide public health problem. Therapy with interferon and ribavirin leads to viral elimination in less than 50% of treated patients. New treatment options aiming at a higher cure rate are focused on direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs), which directly interfere with different steps in the HCV life cycle. In this paper, we describe and analyze a recently developed multiscale model that predicts HCV dynamics under therapy with DAAs. The model includes both intracellular viral RNA replication and extracellular viral infection. We calculate

A bovine babesiosis model with dispersion.

Bovine Babesiosis (BB) is a tick borne parasitic disease with worldwide over 1.3 billion bovines at potential risk of being infected. The disease, also called tick fever, causes significant mortality from infection by the protozoa upon exposure to infected ticks. An important factor in the spread of the disease is the dispersion or migration of cattle as well as ticks. In this paper, we study the effect of this factor. We introduce a number, [Formula: see text], a "proliferation index," which plays the same role as the basic reproduction number [Formula: see text] with respect to the stability

Emergence and nature of mathematical difficulties in young children with Barth syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Barth syndrome (BTHS), a rare X-linked metabolic disorder, is one of the most common known genetic causes of pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy. Advances in the genetic and physical phenotyping of BTHS have surpassed research on its cognitive phenotype. Herein, we expand upon existing knowledge of math difficulties reported for BTHS by evaluating the emergence, nature, and trajectory of mathematics difficulties in this population. METHODS: We examined neurocognitive performance of 19 young patients from our current and previous studies of BTHS, relative to published normative data. C

Functional dissociations between four basic arithmetic operations in the human posterior parietal cortex: a cytoarchitectonic mapping study.

Although lesion studies over the past several decades have focused on functional dissociations in posterior parietal cortex (PPC) during arithmetic, no consistent view has emerged of its differential involvement in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. To circumvent problems with poor anatomical localization, we examined functional overlap and dissociations in cytoarchitectonically defined subdivisions of the intraparietal sulcus (IPS), superior parietal lobule (SPL) and angular gyrus (AG), across these four operations. Compared to a number identification control task, all opera

Number reading in pure alexia--a review.

It is commonly assumed that number reading can be intact in patients with pure alexia, and that this dissociation between letter/word recognition and number reading strongly constrains theories of visual word processing. A truly selective deficit in letter/word processing would strongly support the hypothesis that there is a specialized system or area dedicated to the processing of written words. To date, however, there has not been a systematic review of studies investigating number reading in pure alexia and so the status of this assumed dissociation is unclear. We review the literature on p

The standard strong ion difference, standard total titratable base, and their relationship to the Boston compensation rules and the Van Slyke equation for extracellular fluid.

A general formalism for calculating physiological acid-base balance in multiple compartments is extended to the combined interstitial, plasma, and erythrocyte multicompartment system in humans using the Siggaard-Andersen approximation for interstitial fluid. The resulting equations for total titratable base and strong ion difference reproduce the experimental in vivo carbon dioxide titration curve as well as the experimental strong ion difference value of the interstitial, plasma, and erythrocyte system in normal man. The "Boston rules" for compensation in acute respiratory acidosis and alkalo

Vascular-Coupled Modeling of Treatment Resistance in Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitor Therapy: Parameter Estimation and Phase-Dependent Sensitivity Analysis.

Acquired resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) remains the primary obstacle to long-term disease control in targeted cancer therapy, yet whether resistance emerges gradually through clonal selection or abruptly via mutation acquisition remains unclear. We develop a four-dimensional ordinary differential equation model coupling drug-sensitive and drug-resistant tumor populations with dynamic vascular support and explicit TKI pharmacokinetics. Mathematical analysis establishes solution positivity and uniform boundedness, characterizes all equilibrium states, and determines local stabil

Crossroads in the Learning Brain: The Neural Overlap Between Arithmetic and Phonological Processing.

Robust behavioral evidence suggests an association between reading and math performance. Moreover, previous neuroimaging evidence suggests that arithmetic fact retrieval is supported by similar areas along the perisylvian language network as those typically involved in phonological processing. However, the neural correlates of these abilities have been mostly studied in isolation, and therefore remains unclear whether these abilities recruit functionally overlapping brain areas. We addressed this question by using functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure brain activity during an arithm

Personalized Spatiotemporal Radiotherapy for GBM: A PDE-Constrained Optimization Study.

We develop a personalized optimization framework for designing spatiotemporal radiotherapy strategies for Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). The tumor dynamics are described by a reaction diffusion model on patient-specific brain geometries, and the treatment objective is formulated as a PDE-constrained optimization problem in which the admissible targeting region is allowed to vary on each day of therapy. The resulting optimization requires repeated solutions of the state and adjoint equations, and we implement an adjoint-driven gradient algorithm with line search and projection to enforce clinic

From confinement to remodeling: modeling topotaxis-driven cell migration in obstacles networks.

Several physiological and pathological processes, such as development, wound healing, and cancer invasion, depend on cell migration through fibrous extracellular matrix (ECM). In such contexts, topographical features of the ECM, including fiber alignment and pore size, strongly bias migration, a phenomenon known as topotaxis. To explore this guidance mechanism in a controlled theoretical setting, we present a minimal particle-based model of single-cell motility in two-dimensional environments abstracted as networks of elongated obstacles. This abstraction captures key geometric and topographic

Real-world object size as a magnitude dimension: Robust perceived size distance effects and context-sensitive spatial coding.

Research on numerical cognition suggests that magnitude processing supports both distance-sensitive comparison and directional spatial mapping. Whether real-world object size shows a similar profile, however, remains unclear. The present study examined this question across two preregistered experiments using task contexts adapted from paradigms in the numerical domain. In Experiment 1, participants judged which of two simultaneously presented objects was smaller or larger in real-world size. An arrangement-based compatibility pattern emerged in the small-object task but not in the large-object

A p-adic reaction-diffusion model of branching coral growth and calcification dynamics.

Coral colonies exhibit complex, self-similar branching architectures shaped by biochemical interactions and environmental constraints. To model their growth and calcification dynamics, we propose a novel reaction-diffusion framework defined over p -adic ultrametric spaces. The model incorporates biologically grounded reactions involving calcium and bicarbonate ions, whose interplay drives the precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3). Nonlocal diffusion is governed by the Vladimirov operator over the p -adic integers, naturally capturing the hierarchical geometry of branching coral structures

Noise-Driven Tipping in a Tumor-Immune Model with Optimal Combination Therapy.

Cancer mortality remains high in part because tumor-immune interactions can be unpredictable and may exhibit multistability, making malignant progression difficult to anticipate. We develop and analyze a tumor-immune model incorporating chemotherapy-induced toxicity and a Norton-Simon type tumor response, and show via deterministic analysis and continuation that increasing toxicity can generate hysteresis and bistability separating tumor dormancy from an uncontrolled full-growth state, so that small perturbations may precipitate abrupt progression. To capture uncertainty, we study environmenta

Threshold dynamics of an age-structured HIV model with virus-to-cell, cell-to-cell transmissions, and CTL immune response.

Both virus-to-cell and cell-to-cell transmission modes play a crucial role in the long-term dynamics of HIV infection. Additionally, the immune response - particularly the activity of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) - can significantly influence the threshold conditions for viral persistence. By incorporating age-structured within-host virus dynamics and the immune response, we develop a dynamical model to explore the intricacies of HIV transmission and progression within a detailed mathematical framework. Specifically, by analyzing the characteristic equations, we establish the local stability

An Approximate Bayesian Computation Approach for Embryonic Astrocyte Migration Model Reduction.

During embryonic development of the retina of the eye, astrocytes, a type of glial cell, migrate over the retinal surface and form a dynamic mesh. This mesh then serves as scaffolding for blood vessels to form the retinal vasculature network that supplies oxygen and nutrients to the inner portion of the retina. Astrocyte spreading proceeds in a radially symmetric manner over the retinal surface. Additionally, astrocytes mature from astrocyte precursor cells (APCs) to immature perinatal astrocytes (IPAs) during this embryonic stage. We extend a previously-developed continuum model that describe

Stochastic optimal control of pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV infection for a jump model.

We analyze a stochastic optimal control problem for the PReP vaccine in a model for the spread of HIV. To do so, we use a stochastic model for HIV/AIDS with PReP, where we include jumps in the model. This generalizes previous works in the field. First, we prove that there exists a positive, unique, global solution to the system of stochastic differential equations which makes up the model. Further, we introduce a stochastic control problem for dynamically choosing an optimal percentage of the population to receive PReP. By using the stochastic maximum principle, we derive an explicit expressio
