Postpartum depression without delivering a child?

OBJECTIVE: Depression in people related to delivering women is documented in their mates, but only anecdotal in other family members. We describe a case of depression in a woman who had previously experienced postpartum depression after the birth of her nephew. METHOD: A clinical description of the case. RESULTS: A 53-year-old woman, hysterectomized at age 47 years, was admitted for attempted suicide. She developed major depressive episode 1 month after her daughter had delivered a son. She had a past history of two postpartum depressive episodes clinically identical to the current episode.

A CLAVATA3-like Gene Acts as a Gynoecium Suppression Function in White Campion.

How do separate sexes originate and evolve? Plants provide many opportunities to address this question as they have diverse mating systems and separate sexes (dioecy) that evolved many times independently. The classic "two-factor" model for evolution of separate sexes proposes that males and females can evolve from hermaphrodites via the spread of male and female sterility mutations that turn hermaphrodites into females and males, respectively. This widely accepted model was inspired by early genetic work in dioecious white campion (Silene latifolia) that revealed the presence of two sex-deter

The effect of dual inhibition of Ras-MEK-ERK and GSK3β pathways on development of in vitro cultured rabbit embryos.

Dual inhibition (2i) of Ras-MEK-ERK and GSK3β pathways enables the derivation of embryo stem cells (ESCs) from refractory mouse strains and, for permissive strains, allows ESC derivation with no external protein factor stimuli involvement. In addition, blocking of ERK signalling in 8-cell-stage mouse embryos leads to ablation of GATA4/6 expression in hypoblasts, suggesting fibroblast growth factor (FGF) dependence of hypoblast formation in the mouse. In human, bovine or porcine embryos, the hypoblast remains unaffected or displays slight-to-moderate reduction in cell number. In this study, we

Dam parity of origin is associated with lifetime productivity in first parity sows.

Sow lifetime productivity is a key driver of productivity and sustainability in pig production systems. While primiparous sow progeny differs from those born to multiparous sows during early growth, less is known about whether dam parity (DP) of origin influences lifetime productivity once females enter the breeding herd. The objective of this study was to evaluate associations between DP and lifetime growth, reproductive performance, and longevity in replacement gilts born from different parity groups. Production records from 7,662 purebred Large White females entering 11 European multiplier

Maternal and fetal roles in bacterially induced preterm labor in the mouse.

BACKGROUND: The relative roles of the mother and fetus in signaling for labor remain poorly understood. OBJECTIVE: We previously demonstrated using gene knockout (KO) mice that Escherichia coli-induced preterm delivery is completely dependent on MyD88, a toll-like receptor adaptor protein. Here we leveraged this finding to conduct a genetic experiment testing whether the mother, the fetus, or both signal for parturition in bacterially induced labor. STUDY DESIGN: Six different maternal/fetal genotype combinations for MyD88 were studied: wild-type (WT) dams carrying one of the following: (1)

Factors associated with genetic damage - an analysis integrating human populations from Southern Brazil.

Socioeconomic and demographic factors, lifestyle and cultural characteristics may play an important role in the development of genetic damage. This damage represents a potential health risk to an individual and increases the risk of developing negative outcomes. The aim of this study was to investigate the association of a set of factors and genetic damage by gathering data from previously studied populations in southern Brazil. This study analyzed data related to genetic damage and socioeconomic, demographic, and lifestyle variables of 514 individuals aged 18 to 64 years, residing in 8 cities

Epidermal growth factor activates reproductive behavior independent of ovarian steroids in female rodents.

Sex steroids exert profound influence on neural development and function through activation of intranuclear receptors. However, during sexual differentiation and at onset of puberty, intracerebral estrogen (E) availability is subsequent to these effects. The potent mitogen epidermal growth factor (EGF) activates estrogen receptor (ER)-dependent transcription in cultured cells in the absence of exogenous E. Since reproductive behavior in female rodents is the result of E-dependent transcriptional activity and protein synthesis, lordosis serves as a well established in vivo model for probing cel

B cell response during infection with the MAT a and MAT alpha mating types of Cryptococcus neoformans.

In the present study, we compared the B cell response of BALB/c and C57Bl/6 mice during Cryptococcus neoformans infection. This response was investigated using virulent serotype D forms of mating types alpha and a (MAT alpha and MAT a). C57Bl/6 mice showed massive (mainly cerebral) infection by both types, while BALB/c were resistant to infection. Some resistance of C57Bl/6 mice was induced by previous immunization with the capsular polysaccharide from MAT alpha. Passive immunization of C57Bl/6 mice with purified antibody (Ab) obtained from capsular polysaccharide-immunized mice also increased

Interindividual variability in metformin pharmacokinetics in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Metformin is the first-line treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients and it's prescriptions in children have increased for off-label indications. However, interindividual variability of metformin pharmacokinetics in children is not well studied. Metformin is a cation that requires multiple transporters for its absorption, distribution and elimination, including organic cation transporters (OCTs) and multidrug and toxin extrusion (MATE) transporters. METHODS: We conducted a 12 h clinical pharmacokinetic study in 36 pediatric patients (age, 7-21 years) treated wi

Familial risk and phenotypic variation of sarcoidosis in the Icelandic population.

BACKGROUND: The familial risk of sarcoidosis is heterogeneous, and previous studies demonstrate conflicting results. The present study maps the pattern of familial distribution of all known, biopsy-verified sarcoidosis in the Icelandic population (1981-2021). METHODS: All cases were re-confirmed and categorised into one of the five phenotypic groups described by Schupp et al., and in different groups based on disease severity. Distant relationships were accurately traced for relatives of sarcoidosis patients and their mates using the nationwide Icelandic Genealogy Database. This allows creati

Preferences and Ratings of Partner Traits in Female Survivors of Childhood Abuse With PTSD and Healthy Controls.

There is growing empirical evidence for an association between childhood abuse (CA) and intimate partner violence (IPV) in adulthood. We tested whether revictimized survivors of severe to extreme severities of child sexual abuse (CSA) and severe severities of child physical abuse (CPA) differed from nonvictimized healthy controls in their trait preferences in intimate partners and their current mate choice. In a sample of 52 revictimized female patients with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after CSA/CPA and 52 female healthy controls, the validated Intimate Partner Preferences Questionnai

Maternal dietary folate and/or vitamin B12 restrictions alter body composition (adiposity) and lipid metabolism in Wistar rat offspring.

Maternal vitamin deficiencies are associated with low birth weight and increased perinatal morbidity and mortality. We hypothesize that maternal folate and/or vitamin B(12) restrictions alter body composition and fat metabolism in the offspring. Female weaning Wistar rats received ad libitum for 12 weeks a control diet (American Institute of Nutrition-76A) or the same with restriction of folate, vitamin B(12) or both (dual deficient) and, after confirming vitamin deficiency, were mated with control males. The pregnant/lactating mothers and their offspring received their respective diets throug

LPS-induced occult loss in mice requires FGL2.

PROBLEM: FGL2 prothrombinase is required for spontaneous abortion (resorptions) in the CBA x DBA/2 model, and for abortions in C57Bl/6 (B6) mice triggered by Salmonella enteritidis lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Unlike abortions, occult losses in B6 mice, which begin before gestation day 9.5 in mice, do not require the tumor necrosis factor-alpha receptor type 1, and may be triggered by either Salmonella enteritidis or Escherichia coli LPS. Heterozygous matings of fgl2+/-xfgl2+/- B6 mice also have a high spontaneous occult loss of fgl2-/- and to a lesser extent, fgl2+/- embryos caused by hemorrhage

Recruitment of Mec1 and Ddc1 checkpoint proteins to double-strand breaks through distinct mechanisms.

In response to DNA damage, eukaryotic cells activate checkpoint pathways that arrest cell cycle progression and induce the expression of genes required for DNA repair. In budding yeast, the homothallic switching (HO) endonuclease creates a site-specific double-strand break at the mating type (MAT) locus. Continuous HO expression results in the phosphorylation of Rad53, which is dependent on products of the ataxia telangiectasia mutated-related MEC1 gene and other checkpoint genes, including DDC1, RAD9, and RAD24. Chromatin immunoprecipitation experiments revealed that the Ddc1 protein associat

Conserved and rewired MAPK networks in human fungal pathogens.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades are among the most ancient and evolutionarily conserved signalling modules in eukaryotes, translating extracellular cues into adaptive transcriptional and metabolic outputs through a hierarchical three-tier kinase architecture. In yeasts, these pathways control osmotic and oxidative stress adaptation, mating, morphogenesis and cell wall remodelling, while in fungal pathogens they have been adapted to support virulence-factor production, host adaptation and antifungal tolerance. Here, we summarise the current understanding of MAPK signalling in t

Improving an Industrial Sherry Base Wine by Yeast Enhancement Strategies.

There is growing interest in yeast selection for industrial fermentation applications since it is a factor that protects a wine's identity. Although it is strenuous evaluating the oenological characteristics of yeasts in selection processes, in many cases the most riveting yeasts produce some undesirable organoleptic characteristics in wine. The aim of the present work is to improve an industrial yeast strain by reducing its hydrogen sulfide (H2S) production. To accomplish this, two different improvement approaches were used on said yeast: hybridization by mass mating and adaptive laboratory e

Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) and Animal Reproduction.

Stimuli that lead to the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) and pituitary gonadotropins and, consequently, ovulation in mammals fall into two broad categories. In the first, high plasma oestrogen concentrations induce the events that trigger ovulation, a characteristic of spontaneous ovulators. In the second, nerve stimuli occurring during mating reach the hypothalamus and trigger the release of GnRH and ovulation with a neuroendocrine reflex that characterizes induced ovulators. In this review, we will give an overview of the distribution of NGF and its expression in the differen

Nutrition Related Stress Factors Reduce the Transfer of Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Resistance Genes between an Escherichia coli Donor and a Salmonella Typhimurium Recipient In Vitro.

The transfer of extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-genes occurs frequently between different bacteria species. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of nutrition related stress factors on this transfer. Thus, an Escherichia coli donor and a Salmonella Typhimurium recipient were co-incubated for 4 h in media containing different levels of the stress factors' pH, osmolality, copper, zinc and acetic, propionic, lactic, and n-butyric acid, as well as subtherapeutic levels of cefotaxime, sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim, and nitrofurantoin. Conjugation frequencies were calculated as tr

Fumonisin B₁ induced neural tube defects were not increased in LM/Bc mice fed folate-deficient diet.

SCOPE: Fumonisin B1 (FB1 ) is found in corn-based foods and is a possible risk factor for neural tube defects (NTDs). The mechanism(s) underlying NTD induction by FB1 in LM/Bc mice is not understood; however, evidence suggests disrupted folate transport is involved. METHODS AND RESULTS: Female LM/Bc mice were fed folate-sufficient (control) or folate-deficient diet beginning 5 wk before mating, treated with 0 (vehicle), 2.5 or 10 mg/kg FB1 by intraperitoneal injection on embryonic days 7 (E7) and E8, and their fetuses examined on E16.
