This study reviews the epidemiology of patients aged 1-18 years treated for maxillofacial injuries during a 3 year period at a tertiary care centre. Of the 276 patients, 65.5% were aged 1-10 years. Seventy-three per cent of injuries were to the soft tissues and 15% of injuries were fractures. The mandible and zygoma were the most commonly fractured facial bones. In the adolescent group, facial fractures accounted for over half of all injuries. Injuries of 96.8% were classed as minor to moderate. Falls were by far, the commonest cause of injury, but with increasing age, assaults became more com…

Materials and Methods A 6-year retrospective analysis of 111 patients treated for maxillofacial fractures in Davangere, Karnataka from January 2004 to December 2009 was performed. Variables like age, gender, occupation, type of fracture and mechanism of injury, concomitant injury, mode of treatment, and complications were recorded and assessed. Results Men between 21 and 30 years were mostly affected (male-to-female ratio = 10:1; age range = 17.60 years; mean 31.7 ± 9.8 [standard deviation]). Most fractures were caused by road traffic accidents (RTAs; 74.7%), followed by interpersonal violence

Cranio-maxillofacial injuries affect a significant proportion of trauma patients either in isolation or concurring with other serious injuries. Contrary to maxillofacial injuries that result from a direct impact, central skull base and lateral skull base (petrous bone) fractures usually are caused by a lateral or sagittal directed force to the skull and therefore are indirect fractures. The traditional strong role of conventional images in patients with isolated trauma to the viscerocranium is decreasing. Spiral multislice CT is progressively replacing the panoramic radiograph, Waters view, an…

We present an unusual case of a retained crossbow bolt in the maxillofacial area of a 31-year-old man. While crossbow injuries are rare, this case is of interest because otolaryngologists are often faced with treating retained foreign objects after penetrating facial trauma. These cases are difficult to manage because of the complexity and variety of injuries that can occur during both the initial trauma and the removal. We focus on the management of the bolt's removal and provide a brief discussion of the relevant literature on crossbow injuries to the head and neck.

The relatively low incidence of facial fractures can be related to certain growth factors. The cranium and forehead are comparatively large, and shield the facial skeleton from injury. Fractures of the mandible occur in greater frequency than those of the middle third of the face. Emphasis is placed on pediatric maxillofacial trauma and the potential of deformity due to growth disorders. Fractures of the visceral cranium are often accompanied by other injuries, especially fractures of the skull and intracranial injuries. Of primary importance is an early assessment of the patient's general con

Background: Surgical management of trauma in the maxillofacial complex can result in iatrogenic nerve injuries, particularly involving the infraorbital, inferior alveolar, and mental nerves. Paresthesia is a common postoperative complication, often attributed to the anatomical positioning of these nerve structures, making them vulnerable to injury. Among current therapeutic options for nerve injuries, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has shown promising results in published studies. Objectives: This prospective observational study evaluated the effects of LLLT on nerve recovery following maxillo

A man in his 20s came for maxillofacial consultation with a pus discharge from the left preauricular region for the last 1 year. He had met with a road traffic accident 2 years earlier and had received surgical treatment for injuries associated with the same. Investigations revealed multiple impacted foreign bodies deep within his facial structures. Successful surgical removal of the objects required a multidisciplinary effort between maxillofacial surgeons and otorhinolaryngologists. Complete removal of all the impacted wooden pieces was done through a combined endoscopic and open preauricula

PURPOSE: Maxillofacial trauma confers an increased risk of long-term clinical sequelae with a substantial economic burden on the health care system. Substance use has long been correlated with an increased risk of trauma, yet to date, a comprehensive profile of substance users incurring facial fractures has not been established. We aimed to establish patterns and trends of substance use and specific substances in the setting of maxillofacial trauma.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at our institution examining patients with maxillofacial fractures from 2016 to

Bear attacks, although rare, may result in severe maxillofacial trauma, highlighting the devastating consequences of human-wildlife conflict in rural areas. Bear maulings typically cause cutting, penetrating, and crushing injuries, with most victims sustaining contaminated maxillofacial trauma requiring comprehensive management to prevent complications. We report a case of a 68-year-old woman presenting with sustained severe left-sided facial trauma following a bear attack. The patient had a full-thickness hemifacial avulsion, fractures of the zygomaticum and maxilla, and a non-salvageable ocu

Visual loss caused by trauma to the optic nerve is a well-recognized sequela to cranio-maxillofacial trauma. The authors reviewed their experience with 90 patients with pure traumatic optic neuropathy and optic nerve trauma with concomitant maxillofacial injuries. All patients were treated with intravenous steroids. Those not improving underwent extracranial optic canal decompression. Patients with initial visual acuity of 20/100 or better all responded favorably with improvement in visual acuity or visual field to a course of intravenous megadose corticosteroids. Patients with initial vision …

PURPOSE: Road traffic accidents remain as the most common cause of maxillofacial injuries in developed countries. To the best of our knowledge, comparative analysis of fracture localizations and injury types of injured pedestrians and passengers is seldom performed. Thus, this study aimed to compare maxillofacial injuries between pedestrians and passengers injured in road traffic accidents in terms of demographic characteristics of the patients, localization of fractures, and treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study population was composed of patients who underwent surgery for maxillofacia…

Foreign bodies are often encountered by oral and maxillofacial surgeons and may present a diagnostic challenge to the trauma surgeon due to many factors such as the size of the object, the difficult access, and a close anatomic relationship of the foreign body to vital structures. They are usually a result of injuries or operations. Fragments of broken instruments can be left behind and entire teeth or their fragments can be displaced during extraction. The approach to this kind of injury should be sequential and multidisciplinary, beginning with the trauma unit that will provide maintenance o

INTRODUCTION: The reported incidence of pediatric facial fractures is relatively low, within age limits of up to 5 years, whereas prevalence increases in children and adolescents. Considering the active growth that takes place in children, maxillofacial trauma can have deleterious effects if it involves growth centers present in the facial region and may lead to disability, morbidity as well as major financial consequences linked to the surgical procedures and hospital stay.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The present study aimed to evaluate the relative frequency of maxillofacial traumatic injuries in the

Sports-related maxillofacial fractures were analysed in 80 patients, accounting for 5.6% of all patients with facial bone fractures, treated during the 5-year period 1981-1985. 55% of the patients had 1 or more mandibular fractures and 45% had midface fractures. 6% of the patients had multiple injuries. The most common causes of injury were collision and fall. Soccer and ice hockey turned out to be the most hazardous sports, although sports-related maxillofacial fractures were less severe than those related to other causes. The need for oral and facial protection among athletes involved in con
