BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Europe has experienced a major resurgence of measles in recent years, despite the availability and free access to a safe, effective, and affordable vaccination measles, mumps and rubella vaccine (MMR). The main driver for this is suboptimal vaccine coverage. The three objectives of this study are to synthesize and critically assess parental attitudes and beliefs toward MMR uptake, to develop strategies and policy recommendations to effectively improve MMR vaccine uptake accordingly, and ultimately to identify areas for further research.

BACKGROUND: Measles vaccine (MV) has a greater effect on child survival when administered in early infancy, when maternal antibody may still be present.
METHODS: To test whether MV has a greater effect on overall survival if given in the presence of maternal measles antibody, we reanalyzed data from 2 previously published randomized trials of a 2-dose schedule with MV given at 4-6 months and at 9 months of age. In a retrospective study of ten epidemics of measles in virgin-soil populations in Greenland, 368 women were found to be pregnant at the time of their infection with measles. Information on the course of the pregnancies was obtained in 327 of these women and a clinical examination was made of 252 of their children. Since early 2008, France has been experiencing a measles outbreak with almost 5,000 notified cases as of 30 June 2010, including three measles-related deaths. The proportion of cases 20 years or older reached 38% during the first half of 2010. This situation is the consequence of insufficient vaccine coverage (90% at age 24 months in 2007) that led to the accumulation of susceptibles over the last years. It underlines the need for additional measures targeting susceptible children and young adults.

In 2006, 115 children hospitalized with measles in Germany were reported. Detailed information could be obtained for 96 cases from a pediatric hospital surveillance system. The most frequent symptoms and complications were pneumonia, respiratory insufficiency, other respiratory disorders, otitis media, feeding problems, and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Two children died of measles inclusion body encephalitis.
