Meckel's diverticulum Imaging: In and Out.

Meckels diverticulum (MD) is the commonest among the omphalomesenteric duct anomaly spectrum with an overall incidence of 2-3% . It is a true diverticulum arising on the antimesenteric side of distal ileum approximately 2 feet from the ileocecal junction. Heterotopic gastric and pancreatic mucosa are commonly found within the diverticulum predisposing to bleeding and inflammation. Complications are more common in male and the type of complication differs based on the age of occurrence and include hemorrhage, inflammation, obstruction, ischemia and tumor formation. Due to overlapping clinical p

A Presentation of Meckel's Diverticulum With Malignancy.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital gastrointestinal anomaly resulting from incomplete obliteration of the omphalomesenteric duct. Although often asymptomatic, MD may rarely harbor malignancies. The management of incidentally discovered MD in adults remains controversial. CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his 70s presented with abdominal pain and iron deficiency anemia. Computed tomography demonstrated a 13 × 14 cm heterogeneously enhancing right lower quadrant mass concerning for a primary mesenteric neoplasm. The patient underwent surgical resection, and intraop

Symptomatic Meckel's Diverticulum in pediatrics.

INTRODUCTION: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the remnant of the vitelline duct (VD) also called omphalomesente ric duct and it is considered the most frequent gastrointestinal malformation. Most of the cases are asymptomatic and the diagnosis of this type is always a challenge. OBJECTIVE: To describe 3 sympto matic presentations of MD and to discuss its symptoms, signs, and possible diagnostic-therapeutic tools. CLINICAL CASES: Case 1: A six-month-old patient with obstructive bowel syndrome. In explo ratory laparotomy, an MD was identified with a mesodiverticular band causing an internal hern

Perforation of a mesenteric Meckel's diverticulum.

Meckel's diverticulum is a remnant of the embryologic omphalomeseteric duct and is a common congenital anomaly found in ~2% of the population. The clinical significance of this anomaly is that the persistent diverticulum can lead to intestinal obstruction or diverticulitis and may contain ectopic tissue which can lead to bleeding, ulceration or perforation. The classic location of a Meckel's diverticulum has been described ~40 cm from the ileocecal valve on the antimesenteric side of the distal ileum. There have only been a few documented cases of a Meckel's diverticulum found on the mesenteri

[Meckel's diverticulum : state of the art].

The persistence of the embryonic vitelline duct can lead to omphalomesenteric duct anomalies. A wide variety of anomalies, depending on the remnant segment and its degree of involution, may occur as a result of the omphalomesenteric duct failing to obliterate completely. The most frequent omphalomesenteric duct anomaly is Meckel's diverticulum, which is present in approximately 2-3 % of the population. Despite the progress in medical imaging, conventional abdominal computed tomography and endoscopy have limitations for the diagnosis of Meckel's diverticulum. The laparoscopic exploratory remain

A curious case of Meckel's diverticulum.

Meckel's diverticulitis or Meckel's associated pathology frequently presents in childhood with gastrointestinal bleeding. It is rarely seen in adults. It is a congenital abnormality that commonly goes undetected. We present a case of a perforated Meckel's diverticulum due to fishbone ingestion in an elderly gentleman. The aim of this case report is to highlight the rare presentation of a perforation in a Meckel's diverticulum due to an extrinsic pathology and to outline diagnostic and management options in cases of Meckel's diverticulum.

Ileitis associated with Meckel's diverticulum.

AIMS: Histological features of chronic active ileitis in the small intestine neighbouring a Meckel's diverticulum raise the possibility of concurrent Crohn's disease. Several studies have reported a significant association between Meckel's diverticulum and Crohn's disease, whereas some case reports have proposed that the ileitis is attributable to acid-secreting gastric heterotopia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence, histomorphology and clinical follow-up of Meckel's diverticulum-associated ileitis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Medical records and slides from 48 consecutive surgical

Radioguided surgery in Meckel's diverticulum.

We analyze the case of a patient with intermittent episodes of lower gastrointestinal bleeding and suspected Meckel's diverticulum, whose presence was confirmed by (99m)Tc-pertechnetate scintigraphy. A previous exploratory laparotomy had been performed without finding the diverticulum. In spite of years of medical treatment, the patient presented a new episode of lower gastrointestinal bleeding with normal colonoscopy. A new (99m)Tc-pertechnetate scintigraphy (including SPECT/CT) was performed and allowed the anatomical location of a Meckel's diverticulum and enabled its removal by laparoscopi

Laparoscopic approach to Meckel's diverticulum.

AIM: To retrospective review the laparoscopic management of Meckel Diverticulum (MD) in two Italian Pediatric Surgery Centers. METHODS: Between January 2002 and December 2012, 19 trans-umbilical laparoscopic-assisted (TULA) procedures were performed for suspected MD. The children were hospitalized for gastrointestinal bleeding and/or recurrent abdominal pain. Median age at diagnosis was 5.4 years (range 6 mo-15 years). The study included 15 boys and 4 girls. All patients underwent clinical examination, routine laboratory tests, abdominal ultrasound and technetium-99m pertechnetate scan, and p…
