Selective disruption of hippocampus-mediated recognition memory processes after episodes of transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia (TGA) is characterized by the abrupt onset of severe amnesia without concomitant focal neurological symptoms. Recent studies revealed that small and punctate MR-signal diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions can be found within the hippocampus of TGA patients during the post-acute phase. On the basis of dual-process models of recognition memory, the present study examined the hypothesis that hippocampal dysfunction as suggested by these DWI lesions disrupts hippocampus-mediated recollection in patients with TGA, whereas familiarity-based recognition memory that is ass

Retrieval practice promotes semantic integration of real-world memories without compromising episodic integrity.

Actively recalling information is a well-established memory strengthening technique that reliably outperforms passive review. Termed "the testing effect," retrieval practice may promote semantic transformation and reshape related, unreviewed episodic information, beyond merely strengthening reviewed content. These broader effects of retrieval practice are difficult to capture with simplified laboratory materials but can be examined using rich, real-world events that evolve across multiple episodic and semantic dimensions. However, retrieval practice's impact on such real-world memories remains

Microbial enterotype is linked to episodic and working memories via brain function in the parietal and occipital cortices.

BACKGROUND: Classification of human gut microbiome into distinct enterotypes based on gut microbial community composition has provided an attractive framework for population stratification. While empirical evidence indicates that microbial enterotype is related to brain function and memory, the neural processes underlying this interaction remain to be further characterized. RESULTS: In 510 healthy young adults, we used 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing to perform enterotyping, acquired resting-state functional MRI data to calculate brain functional measures, and assessed both episodic and working

Pushing typists back on the learning curve: Memory chunking improves retrieval of prior typing episodes.

Hierarchical control of skilled performance depends on chunking of several lower-level units into a single higher-level unit. The present study examined the relationship between chunking and recognition of trained materials in the context of typewriting. In 3 experiments, participants were trained with typing nonwords and were later tested on their recognition of the trained materials. In Experiment 1, participants typed the same words or nonwords in 5 consecutive trials while performing a concurrent memory task. In Experiment 2, participants typed the materials with lags between repetitions w

A pilot study exploring the contribution of working memory to "jumping to conclusions" in people with first episode psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: People with delusional beliefs "jump to conclusions" (JTC). This finding is well replicated. However, there is only limited exploration of the factors that might lead a person to JTC. The aim of the present study was to explore the contribution of working memory processes (WM) and IQ to hasty decision making and to investigate the stability of this bias over time. METHODS: A single group cross-sectional design was utilised. The study was conducted in 2 phases: (1) an initial screening phase and (2) an experimental phase whereby we explored and tested hypotheses regarding the cog

Recall of remote episodic memories can appear deficient because of a gist-based retrieval orientation.

Determining whether patients with amnesia can succeed in remembering their distant past has pivotal implications for theories of memory storage. However, various factors influence recall. We speculated that some patients with anterograde amnesia adopt a gist-based retrieval orientation for memories from all time periods, thereby exaggerating remote recall deficits. We tested whether an experimentally induced gist-based retrieval orientation could indeed hinder remote recall. Healthy individuals described photographs of complex scenes (e.g., of a cluttered desk) either with many words or few wo

Historical changes in episodic memory and depressive symptoms among the foreign-born in the United States across midlife and old age.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have documented a health advantage among the foreign-born, but less is known regarding whether this advantage persists across birth cohorts of foreign-born adults in midlife and old age. We examined historical change in episodic memory and depressive symptoms among foreign-born middle-aged and older adults, and explored the moderating role of gender, race, education, age at immigration, and country or region of origin. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Multilevel models were applied to longitudinal data from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; data col

Who benefits most? Exploring age effects of episodic future thinking and enactment encoding on prospective memory from childhood to middle adulthood.

Failures to realise delayed intentions (prospective memory, PM) are common in everyday life, yet little is known about how PM performance can be improved. Deeper encoding during intention formation has been proposed to strengthen memory representations and facilitate later retrieval; however, no study has systematically compared different encoding strategies from childhood to middle adulthood. To address this gap, we examined the effects of two encoding strategies - episodic future thinking (EFT; mental practice) and enactment encoding (EE; physical practice) - on PM performance across four ag

Stable episodic memory and high education do not influence the rate of Alzheimer's disease pathology as measured by plasma p-tau217.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathological changes can be detected with blood-based biomarkers during the long preclinical phase that precedes clinical diagnosis. Tau phosphorylated at threonine 217 (p-tau217) has been found to closely correlate with brain Aβ burden. A recent large-scale cross-sectional study showed elevated p-tau217 concentrations in older individuals (Aarsland et al., 2025). This increase was higher in those with AD dementia and mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and lower in those with intact cognition and higher educational attainment. Thus, intact cognition and higher educa

Improving autobiographical episodic memory, quality of life, and sense of self with a smartphone intervention in early dementia: A case study.

In memory disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, recent autobiographical memories are disproportionately vulnerable to loss, yet most traditional reminiscence therapies focus on remote past events. We present a case study examining whether a digital reminiscence intervention designed to support memory for recent experiences can improve episodic recall and psychosocial outcomes in neurodegenerative memory impairment. G.F., a 79-year-old man with early-stage dementia, completed an 11-week personalized intervention using HippoCamera, a neuroscience-based smartphone application that helps users ge

No robust add-on effects of prefrontal theta-gamma tACS to cognitive training on episodic memory in non-demented older adults.

OBJECTIVE: In order to develop new strategies that counteract age-related cognitive decline, this study explores the efficacy of combined computerized cognitive training (CCT) and prefrontal theta-gamma transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to enhance episodic memory functions in older adults. METHODS: 77 non-demented older adults were randomly assigned to receive either active or sham peak-coupled theta-gamma tACS targeting the prefrontal cortex while undergoing CCT. Global cognition and episodic memory performance was assessed before, after, and three months after a 16-day int

Involvement of episodic memory in language comprehension: Naturalistic comprehension pushes unrelated words closer in semantic space for at least 12 h.

Recent experience with a word significantly influences its subsequent interpretation. For instance, encountering bank in a river-related context biases future interpretations toward 'side of a river' (vs. 'financial bank'). To explain this effect, the episodic context account posits that episodic memory helps bind word meanings in the language input, creating a temporary, context-specific representation that can bias subsequent lexical interpretation. This account predicts that even unrelated words would be linked together in episodic memory, potentially altering their interpretation. In Exper

The moderating role of information processing speed in the relationship between brain remodeling and episodic memory in amnestic mild cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: The role of information processing speed (IPS) on relationships between episodic memory (EM) and central remodeling features in amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) was investigated. METHODS: Neuropsychological evaluations and multimodal magnetic resonance imaging were performed on 48 patients diagnosed with aMCI and 50 healthy controls (HC). Moderation models explored the moderating effect of IPS on associations between EM and imaging features at single-region, connectivity, and network levels. RESULTS: IPS significantly enhanced the positive correlations between recall a

Electrophysiological dynamics of salience, default mode, and frontoparietal networks during episodic memory formation and recall revealed through multi-experiment iEEG replication.

Dynamic interactions between large-scale brain networks underpin human cognitive processes, but their electrophysiological mechanisms remain elusive. The triple network model, encompassing the salience network (SN), default mode network (DMN), and frontoparietal network (FPN), provides a framework for understanding these interactions. We analyzed intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from 177 participants across four diverse episodic memory experiments, each involving encoding as well as recall phases. Phase transfer entropy analysis revealed consistently higher directed informa

Estimating presymptomatic episodic memory impairment using simple hand movement tests: A cross-sectional study of a large sample of older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Finding low-cost methods to detect early-stage Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a research priority for neuroprotective drug development. Presymptomatic Alzheimer's is associated with gait impairment but hand motor tests, which are more accessible, have hardly been investigated. This study evaluated how home-based Tasmanian (TAS) Test keyboard tapping tests predict episodic memory performance. METHODS: 1169 community participants (65.8 ± 7.4 years old; 73% female) without cognitive symptoms completed online single-key and alternate-key tapping tests and episodic memory, working memor

Thalamic stimulation for tremor. Subtle changes in episodic memory are related to stimulation per se and not to a microthalamotomy effect.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of unilateral deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the ventrointermediate (Vim) thalamic nucleus on neuropsychological functioning comparing stimulation-on with stimulation-off conditions. Nine patients [five patients with Parkinson's Disease (PD), two patients with essential tremor (ET) and 2 patients with multiple sclerosis (MS)] underwent comprehensive neuropsychological testing for cognitive functions, including general mental impairment, aphasia, agnosia, executive and constructional abilities, learning, memory, cognitive processing speed and

Awareness of episodic memory and meta-cognitive profiles: associations with cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers at the preclinical stage of the Alzheimer's continuum.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of cognitive awareness, anosognosia, is a clinical deficit in Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia. However, an increased awareness of cognitive function, hypernosognosia, may serve as a marker in the preclinical stage. Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) might correspond to the initial symptom in the dynamic trajectory of awareness, but SCD might be absent along with low awareness of actual cognitive performance in the preclinical stage. We hypothesized that distinct meta-cognitive profiles, both hypernosognosia and anosognosia, might be identified in preclinical-AD. This r

Inter-identity amnesia for neutral episodic self-referential and autobiographical memory in Dissociative Identity Disorder: An assessment of recall and recognition.

Amnesia is a core diagnostic criterion for Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), however previous research has indicated memory transfer. Age-related change in episodic memory: role of functional and structural connectivity between the ventral posterior cingulate and the parietal cortex.

While the neural correlates of age-related episodic memory decline have been extensively studied, the precise involvement of the Posterior Cingulate Cortex (PCC) and posterior parietal cortex (the precuneus and the angular gyrus), remains unclear. The present study examined functional and structural neural correlates of age-related episodic memory change assessed over 12 years in 120 older adults (range 76-90 years). Episodic memory performance was measured using the Free and Cued Selective Reminding Test (FCSRT); functional connectivity metrics were computed from resting-state fMRI images and
