A 1.37-Mb 12p11.22-p11.21 deletion coincident with a 367-kb 22q11.2 duplication detected by array comparative genomic hybridization in an adolescent girl with autism and difficulty in self-care of menstruation.

OBJECTIVE: To present an array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) characterization of a 12p11.22-p11.21 microdeletion and 22q11.2 microduplication in an adolescent girl with autism, mental retardation, facial dysmorphism, microcephaly, behavior problems, and an apparently balanced reciprocal translocation of t(8;12)(q24.3;p11.2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 13-year-old girl was referred to the hospital because of autism, mental retardation, and difficulty in the self-care of her menstruation. Cytogenetic analysis revealed an apparently balanced reciprocal translocation and a karyotype of 4…

Spontaneous Coronary Artery Dissection (SCAD) Presenting as Non-ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (NSTEMI) During Menstruation in a Hypertensive Woman: A Case Report of Menstrual Hormonal Fluctuations as a Potential Trigger.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an uncommon, non-atherosclerotic cause of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) that primarily affects younger women. We describe the case of a 33-year-old woman with hypertension who presented with acute chest pain during menstruation and was diagnosed with SCAD by coronary angiography. Hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle have been postulated to contribute to the pathogenesis of SCAD through transient alterations in vascular wall integrity and arterial stability in susceptible individuals. This report highlights the need for heightened cli…

Using human-centered design to co-design dedicated menstrual health spaces with people who menstruate in Bidi Bidi refugee settlement, Uganda: Learnings for further adaptation and scale in humanitarian settings.

BACKGROUND: Many people who menstruate in low- and middle-income countries struggle to manage their menstruation safely, hygienically, and with dignity. This is exacerbated in humanitarian settings with limited access to menstrual products and safe, private spaces for changing, washing, and disposing of menstrual products. To address these challenges, Youth Development Labs (YLabs) used a human-centered design approach to co-design the Cocoon Mini, a safe, physical structure for managing menstruation in the Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement in Uganda. METHODS: The study comprised five phases, incl…

The role of the addition of ovarian suppression to tamoxifen in young women with hormone-sensitive breast cancer who remain premenopausal or regain menstruation after chemotherapy (ASTRRA): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial and progress.

BACKGROUND: Ovarian function suppression (OFS) has been shown to be effective as adjuvant endocrine therapy in premenopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, it is currently unclear if addition of OFS to standard tamoxifen therapy after completion of adjuvant chemotherapy results in a survival benefit. In 2008, the Korean Breast Cancer Society Study Group initiated the ASTRRA randomized phase III trial to evaluate the efficacy of OFS in addition to standard tamoxifen treatment in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer patients who remain or regain premenopausal sta

Bacterial flora of the vagina during the menstrual cycle: findings in users of tampons, napkins, and sea sponges.

The recent association of menstruation, tampon use, and staphylococcal infection with toxic shock syndrome led us to study the association of menstruation and catamenial product use with changes in vaginal flora. Cultures of the cervical os were obtained in midcycle and during menstruation from 12 women who used napkins and 40 women who used tampons. Staphylococcus aureus was found during midcycle and menstruation in three women, during menstruation alone in six, and during midcycle alone in none, indicating a significant association of S. aureus with menstruation (p = 0.04). No difference was…

A rite of passage: a mixed methodology study about knowledge, perceptions and practices of menstrual hygiene management in rural Gambia.

BACKGROUND: Appropriate menstrual hygiene management (MHM) is impeded by taboos and secrecy surrounding menstruation. Unhygienic menstrual practices and unpreparedness for managing menstruation has been associated with adverse health and social outcomes among adolescent girls. In The Gambia, there is limited data on menstrual practices among girls and women in rural communities and the sources of information about menstruation for the adolescents. This study aimed to explore knowledge, preparedness and practices of menstruation and its management among adolescents, mothers and teachers in rura…

A qualitative inquiry into the lived experiences of menstrual health and hygiene in the transgender and non-binary people in urban areas of India.

SIGNIFICANCE: Most global research on menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) focuses on cisgender women and girls, with limited evidence on the experiences of transgender and non-binary (TNB) people. This study aimed to document the lived experiences of menstruation management among TNB people in urban India. METHODS: We conducted 13 semi-structured interviews with TNB adults aged 19-40 years in three major Indian cities in collaboration with community organizations. We asked participants to share their experiences of managing menstruation in multiple spaces of life, e.g. at home, school, workpla…

The role of purity and frequency in the classification of perimenstrual headache.

BACKGROUND: Among all menstruation-associated headaches, only menstrual migraine has classification criteria in the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition (ICHD-3). Other menstruation-associated headaches are not generally described. The ICHD-3 classifies menstrual migraine according to headache type, timing(on days -2 to +3 of menstruation), frequency (whether headache occurs in at least two out of three menstrual cycles), and purity(whether headache occurs at other times of the menstrual cycle), and provides a reference for research on menstruation-associated headache…

Hip pain level variation in female femoroacetabular impingement syndrome patients in menstrual cycle.

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice, we noticed that a large group of young female patients diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) suffer from hip/groin pain in daily lives and particularly during menstruation. However, it is unknown if female patients have higher burden of pain during menstruation compared to other stages in the menstrual cycle. PURPOSE: Our study was to preliminarily identify the hip “pain-peak” in a menstruation cycle in female FAIS patients and explore possible explanations for the correlation. METHODS: Female outpatients diagnosed with FAIS with hip/groi…

Menstrual hygiene management among Bangladeshi adolescent schoolgirls and risk factors affecting school absence: results from a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: Many adolescent girls in low-income and middle-income countries lack appropriate facilities and support in school to manage menstruation. Little research has been conducted on how menstruation affects school absence. This study examines the association of menstrual hygiene management knowledge, facilities and practice with absence from school during menstruation among Bangladeshi schoolgirls. METHODS: We conducted a nationally representative, cross-sectional study in Bangladeshi schools from March to June 2013 among girls 11 to 17 years old who reached menarche. We sampled 700 sch…

Managing the pain of primary and secondary dysmenorrhoea.

Dysmenorrhoea, pain during menstruation, affects 40-95 per cent of menstruating women, and has been reported as the most common causes of regular absenteeism among young women. There are two types of dysmenorrhoea: primary and secondary. Primary dysmenorrhoea is a painful menstruation with no detectable organic disease and is more common in adolescent women. Secondary dysmenorrhoea is painful menstruation that is frequently associated with a pelvic pathology. The symptoms that present with dysmenorrhoea, the management and treatment options that are available, and the implications for nursing …
