[Acupuncture: complications, contraindications and informed consent].

With the widespread usage of acupuncture, the number of reports about complications of this treatment increases. Harmless disturbances are common and include minor bleedings or haematomas, pain during insertion or after withdrawal of the needle, and skin symptoms. In every second acupuncture treatment, at least one of these complications occurs. Orthostatic dysregulations are relatively rare and can be observed in only 1% of patients. They can be prevented by treating the patient in a lying position, especially in the first treatment session. Stab injuries of internal organs most often affect

[Alternative for an equitable law on the protection of the person or confinement and mental illness: 2 impossible concepts].

Since the French Revolution legislation has been mainly concerned with the restraint of innocent people by the so-called "letters de cachet", as it was the case with the mentally ill. Two authorities were legally recommended for this restraint: a judiciary one--the judge--and an administrative one--the Town Mayor. In Belgium it was the changing political domination which decided for one or the other procedure. At present however a judiciary procedure is recommended by the Council of Europe. When the first laws were passed on this matter restraint for mental illness was the only possible procee

Quality of life and burden during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal study with family caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer's disease.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic intensified the challenges faced by family caregivers of persons living with Alzheimer's disease, potentially affecting their psychological, behavioral, and physiological well-being. Understanding how these processes evolve over time is critical for informing targeted interventions. METHODS: A longitudinal study was conducted with 130 Portuguese family caregivers assessed at three time points over a 12-month period. Measures included quality of life (QoL), caregiver burden, psychological distress, forgiveness, health behaviors, caregiving competence, family

The neurotised estlander flap for lip reconstruction.

The Estlander flap is an axial-pattern, lip-switch technique used to reconstruct lip defects that include the oral commissure. We describe a neurotised modification that may confer functional advantages by preserving sensation and helping to maintain oral competence. This is achieved by preservation of the mental nerve branches to the lip and facial nerve branches to the orbicularis oris muscle in the flap.

A study of criminal defendants referred for multiple psychiatric examinations regarding their competency to stand trial.

One of the mainstays of forensic psychiatry has been the determination of a defendant's competency to stand trial. Competency to stand trial is based on the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that a defendant must have sufficient ability to understand court proceedings. Regardless of whether or not the defendant was mentally ill at the time a crime was committed or when the charged, the court can try someone only if that person has the capacity to understand proceedings in order to defend himself. When there is any question as to the competency of the defendant, he is referred for psychiatric evaluatio

[Assessment of competence of predialysis chronic kidney disease stage 5 patients to make treatment decisions: preliminary report].

The competence to consent to treatment of 26 adults with stage 5 predialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD) (16 males, 10 females, age; 58 +/- 11 years, creatinine clearance; 10.1 +/- 3.9 mL/min)was assessed using two kinds of format: the MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool-Treatment (MacCAT-T) and mini-mental-state examination (MMSE). The MacCAT-T revealed poor ability for understanding(3.72 +/- 1.11 points; perfect score, 6 points), appreciating (2.88 +/- 0.88 points; perfect score, 4 points)and reasoning(4.30 +/- 2.11 points; perfect score, 8 points). The interplay between mentalization, personality traits and burnout in psychiatry training: Results from a large multicenter controlled study.

BACKGROUND: A better characterization of educational processes during psychiatry training is needed, both to foster personal resilience and occupational proficiency. METHODS: An adequate coverage of medical residents at the national level was reached (41.86% of the total reference population, 29 out of 36 training centers-80.55%). Controls were recruited among residents in other medical specialties. All participants were assessed by questionnaires to evaluate early life experiences, attachment style, personality traits, coping strategies, emotional competencies. A Structural Equation Model (S

Serious game to promote socioemotional learning and mental health (emoTIC): a study protocol for randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The development of emotional competences may be a protective factor for mental health problems, promoting well-being at such a complex age as adolescence. Technologies may be used to carry out this empowerment because adolescents are attracted to them. The purpose of the study is to design a serious game based on the Mayer et al's emotional intelligence ability model and analyse the effectiveness of the emoTIC programme to develop emotional competences, well-being, mental health, and personal strengths immediately after completion and at 12 months. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The new

Bridging the Gap of Mental Health Inequalities in the Transgender Population: The Role of Nursing Education.

The transgender population experience mental health disparities as a result of numerous environmental, sociocultural and personal factors. Health care-related discrimination plays an unfortunate role in these disparities. The institutional and informational erasure of transgender individuals in health care actively contributes to this discrimination. The lack of preparation of health care professionals to care for this population is a significant factor. There is an absence of education on transgender topics in nursing school and a lack of nursing research on this population. An awareness thro

Self-Management at Work's Moderating Effect on the Relations Between Psychosocial Work Factors and Well-Being.

Mental health self-management (MHS) strategies may help workers with mental health concerns preserve and enhance their well-being. However, little research has explored how these strategies may help mitigate the effects of negative psychosocial work factors (PWFs) on well-being outcomes. This cross-sectional study investigated (1) the relationship between PWFs and well-being, (2) the association between MHS at work and well-being, and (3) the moderating role of self-management in preventing negative PWFs' deleterious effects. A sample of 896 Francophone workers in Canada completed a questionna

Decisional Capacity in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

The cognitive and behavioral changes that can be observed in the neurodegenerative terminal disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), once characterized as purely a motor neuron disease, have become increasingly recognized over the past century. Detecting cognitive deficits earlier and identifying continued changes at regular intervals can lead to improved care, proactive treatments, and earlier discussions about end-of-life wishes. Although medical decisional capacity is required for every treatment decision made, its importance becomes paramount when making decisions on complex medical tr

Ethical problems with the mental health evaluation standards of care for adult gender variant prospective patients.

The World Professional Association for Transgender Health's "Standards of Care: The Hormonal and Surgical Sex Reassignment of Gender Dysphoric Persons" (SOC) set forth standards clinicians must meet to ensure ethical care of adequate quality. The SOC also set requirements gender variant prospective patients must meet to receive medical interventions to change their sexual characteristics to those more typical for the sex to which they were not assigned at birth. One such requirement is that mental health professionals must ascertain that prospective patients have met the SOC's eligibility and

Correlates of Mental Health Treatment Receipt Among Asian Americans with Perceived Mental Health Problems.

Compared with other ethnic groups, Asian Americans report the lowest rates of mental health treatment and service utilization. This is true even among Asian Americans with mental illness, which indicates that the underutilization of mental health services is not due to the low prevalence of mental health disorders in this population. This study examined which sociodemographic factors, types of mental health problems, and barriers to treatment were associated with the treatment receipt among 126 Asian Americans who reported perceived mental health problems. Among sociodemographic factors, Chine

Predicting restorability of incompetent criminal defendants.

U.S. courts frequently require forensic examiners to offer opinions concerning the likelihood that criminal defendants found incompetent to stand trial can have their competence "restored" through treatment. Yet no jurisdiction has established legal guidelines for testimony concerning restorability, and several authors have suggested that mental health professionals cannot accurately predict whether treatment to restore competence will succeed. This study asked whether reliable information that is consistently available at the time of examination might support empirically grounded opinions abo

Is capacity to consent to healthcare a uniformly defined concept? Insights from a document analysis of laws and national guidelines across six European countries.

BACKGROUND: Capacity to consent or decision-making capacity to healthcare is a key prerequisite for a valid informed consent. A clear understanding of this concept is important to protect patients' autonomy. Without it, clinical assessments may vary, jeopardising patients' participation in decisions about their care and increasing the risk of delayed, denied or harmful treatment. Despite substantial international debate and reforms concerning norms on capacity assessment, there remains a paucity of scholarly literature comparing national approaches, which could enable countries to learn from o
