Characteristics and health risk assessment of heavy metals in dust of a waste printed circuit board recycling workshop, China.

Physical separation is the most widely used technology concerning waste printed circuit board (WPCB) recycling in practical terms. The dust generated from the process poses a significant environmental and human health risk. Amounts of heavy metals in dust present in each processing zone of the workshop showed differences. However, to date, few studies have reported this. The mean metal concentrations in workshop dust from different processing zones were investigated in this study and it was found that Zn, Pb, and Sn appeared in higher levels than other metals, followed by Mn > Cr > Ni > V > As

Recent developments in human biomonitoring: non-invasive assessment of target tissue dose and effects of pneumotoxic metals.

Tobacco smoke and polluted environments substantially increase the lung burden of pneumotoxic chemicals, particularly pneumotoxic metallic elements. To achieve a better understanding of the early events between exposure to inhaled toxicants and the onset of adverse effects on the lung, the characterization of dose at the target organ would be extremely useful. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC), obtained by cooling exhaled air under conditions of spontaneous breathing, is a novel technique that could provide a non-invasive assessment of pulmonary pathobiology. Considering that EBC is water practi

Abscess of cauda equina presenting as lumboischialgic pain: a case report.

In May 2008, a report of two workers from the same construction equipment manufacturing plant who were admitted to hospital with Legionnaires disease confirmed by urine antigen prompted an outbreak investigation. Both cases were middle aged men, smokers, and with no travel, leisure or other common community exposure to Legionella sources. There were no wet cooling towers at the plant or in the surrounding area. No increase in respiratory disease or worker absenteeism occurred at the plant during the preceding month. Wider case ascertainment including alerts to hospitals and medical practitione

Particle-Bound Mercury Characterization in the Central Italian Herbarium of the Natural History Museum of the University of Florence (Italy).

Museums air quality can be negatively affected by treatments with heavy metals compounds employed to prevent pest infestations. Among these, the past use of mercury dichloride (HgCl2) on herbaria artifacts currently produces high levels of indoor atmospheric gaseous mercury (Hg0) and possibly of particulate bound Hg (PBM), i.e., the particulate matter containing Hg. This study evaluates the PBM pollution in the Central Italian Herbarium (Natural History Museum of the University of Florence, Italy), characterizing the size range and chemical speciation with SEM-EDS microanalysis. The analysis o

Sex-specific associations between exposure to metal mixtures and mitochondrial DNA copy number: A repeated-measures study.

Few repeated-measures studies with multiple time points have evaluated the sex-specific association between mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn) and long-term exposure to metal mixtures. We conducted a repeated-measures study with three time points and 2550 observations in the manganese-exposed workers healthy cohort. Specifically, the blood concentrations of 15 metals and mtDNAcn were measured in 2012, 2017, and 2021. We employed a machine learning approach (GLMMLASSO) to select the metals most associated with mtDNAcn and used Bayesian kernel machine regression to examine their joint effec

Investigating the relationship of co-exposure to multiple metals with chronic kidney disease: An integrated perspective from epidemiology and adverse outcome pathways.

Systematic studies on the associations between co-exposure to multiple metals and chronic kidney disease (CKD), as well as the underlying mechanisms, remain insufficient. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive perspective on the risk of CKD induced by multiple metal co-exposures through the integration of occupational epidemiology and adverse outcome pathway (AOP). The study participants included 401 male mine workers whose blood metal, β2-microglobulin (β2-MG), and cystatin C (Cys-C) levels were measured. Generalized linear models (GLMs), quantile g-computation models (qgcomp), least abs

Co-exposure to multiple metals, TERT-CLPTM1L variants, and their joint influence on leukocyte telomere length.

OBJECTIVE: Telomere is required for maintaining chromosome stability and genome integrity, while telomere length is sensitive to environmental stressors. We aimed to identify the effects of multiple metals co-exposure as well as their joint effects with TERT-CLPTM1L variants on leukocyte telomere length (LTL). METHODS: This study included 842 workers from a coke-oven plant, of whom plasma concentrations of 23 metals and LTL were determined. Genetic variations in TERT-CLPTM1L were genotyped by using the Global Screening Array. Multipollutant-based statistical methods, including the Bonferroni-

Monitoring of occupational exposure of mild steel welders to ozone and nitrogen oxides.

BACKGROUND: Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding and Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding are widely used for mild steel segments in basic metal industries. Pulmonary problems such as asthma, pulmonary inflammation, hyper-responsiveness of airways and higher susceptibility to infections are reported as the result of occupational exposure of welders to ozone and nitrogen oxides. Potent oxidizing agents like ozone and nitrogen oxides are also reported to be a precursor for respiratory problems and cause lipid peroxidation of membranes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 43 nonsmoking MIG and TIG welders an

Is Urinary Chromium Specific to Hexavalent Chromium Exposure in the Presence of Co-exposure to Other Chromium Compounds? A Biomonitoring Study in the Electroplating Industry.

OBJECTIVES: Electroplating processes are widely used in metal industries to improve the resistance properties of manufactured metal parts. Workers in this industry are potentially exposed both to hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and to other chromium compounds [mostly trivalent chromium (Cr(III))], due to the use of chromic acid baths. The goal of this study was to validate urinary chromium as a Cr(VI) exposure biomarker in the presence of exposure to other chromium compounds. METHODS: A biomonitoring study consisted in monitoring airborne chromium exposure and urinary chromium for one working we

Risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among welders in the informal sector under resource constrained settings.

BACKGROUND: Welding tasks involve the use of awkward working postures and repetitive movements and therefore pose a risk for developing work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMDs). OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to assess the prevalence, severity and risk factors for WRMDs among welders in the informal sector. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 128 welders (33±10.5 years) were purposively selected from three urban centers in Zimbabwe. WRMDs were assessed using a Modified Cornell Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (MCMQ). The Quick Exposure Check (QEC) and the Rapid Entire Body Assessment (REBA) w

Activation of MAP kinases by hexavalent chromium, manganese and nickel in human lung epithelial cells.

Epidemiological studies indicate that workers who perform welding operations are at increased risk for bronchitis, siderosis, occupational asthma and lung cancer due to fume exposure. Welding fumes are a complex chemical mixture, and the metal composition is hypothesized to be an etiological factor in respiratory disease due to this exposure. In the present study, human lung epithelial cells in vitro responded to hexavalent chromium, manganese and nickel over a concentration range of 0.2-200 microM with a significant increase in intracellular phosphoprotein (a measure of stress response pathwa

Dissolution of cobalt from hard metal alloys by cutting fluids.

On grinding hard metal alloys containing cobalt, the dissolution of cobalt during 5 days was studied for nine commercial cutting fluids. After 1 day, a major part of the cobalt liberated from the material ground is found in solution. This percentage decreases when grinding is continued using the same coolant fluid. Only a small fraction of the cobalt is found in particles in the circulating fluid. The bulk must be in the sediment in the storage tank, where it does no harm to the workers' skin. The final concentration of cobalt found in some fluids may be hazardous.

Metal content of settled railway dust: factors affecting iron (Fe) content of dust in railway stations in England and implications for human health exposure assessments.

Railway infrastructure generates metal-containing particles enriched in elements with known health impacts, which are released into the environment and may expose railway users and workers. This study aimed to characterise the metal composition of settled dust in railway stations, estimate deposition rates, and identify station characteristics associated with elevated exposure. Settled dust samples were collected using dust wipes from undisturbed surfaces in nine English railway stations, which enabled opportunistic metals analysis. Metal concentrations were quantified using Inductively Couple

Epidemiology of beryllium sensitization and disease in nuclear workers.

We examined the epidemiology of chronic beryllium disease among a stratified, random sample (n = 895) of nuclear weapons workers using the blood beryllium lymphocyte transformation (BeLT) test and chest radiograph for case identification. Of 18 new cases of beryllium sensitization, 12 had beryllium disease, and three more developed pulmonary granulomas on lung biopsy over the succeeding 2 yr. Beryllium-sensitized cases did not differ from noncases in age, gender, race, ethnicity, smoking, most respiratory symptoms, spirometric or radiographic abnormalities, or job tenure. The six sensitized ca

Ailing bones and failing kidneys: a case of chronic cadmium toxicity.

Heavy metal toxicity is often caused by occupational exposure. Chronic cadmium toxicity is a significant health concern among workers engaged in zinc smelting, battery production and silver jewellery industries, particularly in developing countries. We report the case of a 48-year-old man who presented with severe osteoporosis, impaired renal function and acquired Fanconi syndrome. He was finally diagnosed with chronic cadmium toxicity resulting from long-term occupational exposure. Cadmium has a long biological half-life and there is no effective treatment for people who are exposed to it. Th

[Beryllium--underestimated occupational health hazard in Poland].

Beryllium is a metal used in different branches of industry. Inhalation is the most common way of exposure. Beryllium shows a high affinity to the lung tissue. It may act as toxic, carcinogenic and immunological agent. Chronic beryllium disease (CDB) is very difficult to diagnose because of its similarity to sarcoidosis. The lymphocyte proliferation assay is a very helpful test in CBD diagnosis. It seems reasonable to include this test into the body of the standard diagnostic procedures in workers exposed to beryllium. Early detection of hypersensitivity to beryllium, before CBD symptoms occur
