Heavy metals and emerging organic contaminants in Japanese sewage sludge.

Because of its high dependence on imported phosphorus, Japan is striving to increase the reuse of phosphorus-rich sewage sludge (via direct application or composting) in agriculture rather than using incineration. However, the occurrence and behavior of pollutants in sewage sludge may pose environmental risks and have received limited attention until now. In this study, sewage sludge collected across Japan during a single sampling campaign was analyzed for heavy metals, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), extra…

Heavy Metals and One Health: Current Status and Future Prospects.

Water resources are being continuously contaminated by heavy metals. The levels of these metals are increasing exponentially due to various factors such as natural calamities, anthropogenic activities, rapid industrialization, overuse of pesticides, agricultural runoff, and overpopulation. Heavy metals are elements that have a high atomic weight and densities at least five times greater than that of water. Metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium, nickel, mercury, and arsenic are non-biodegradable and tend to accumulate in the bodies of humans and animals, posing health risks such as gastrointes…

Analysis of the association between blood heavy metals and tinnitus.

Tinnitus is a common symptom among adults in the United States. Increasing evidence indicates that prolonged exposure to heavy metals and excessive intake of trace elements from environmental pollution can increase the likelihood of hearing loss. Although studies have reported associations between heavy metals and hearing loss, the relationship between heavy metals and tinnitus remains uninvestigated. After accounting for the complex survey design, we assessed cross-sectional data on blood lead, cadmium, mercury, selenium, and manganese levels in 4950 participants from the National Health and …

Relationship between heavy metals and miRNAs in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive cancers, characterized by poor prognosis due to the late diagnosis and chemotherapy resistance. Both genetic and environmental factors, including heavy metals exposure are involved in PDAC development. In this study, we evaluated the association between a panel of miRNAs and metals with PDAC, and subsequently assessed their correlation using Spearman's test to investigate potential biological links. miRNA expression was analysed in the serum of PDAC patients (n = 37) compared to healthy controls (n = 20), as well as in tumou…

Dynamic interface catalysis and carbon dioxide reduction of liquid metals.

Liquid metal (LM) catalysis has been demonstrated to have obvious potential in the fields of energy conversion and environmental catalysis due to its unique dynamic interface, adjustable electronic structure and regenerative ability of active sites. Compared with traditional solid-state catalysts, the atomic-level degrees of freedom and fluidity of typical gallium-based LMs exhibit advantages such as anti-poisoning, interface self-repair, and dynamic regulation of reaction pathways. Based on the fundamental characteristics and mechanisms of LM catalysis, this work systematically expounds the p

Hybridization Directionality Governs the Interaction Strength between MoS2 and Metals.

Gold-assisted exfoliation has emerged as an effective method for producing large-area monolayers of two-dimensional materials, yet its underlying mechanism remains poorly understood. While other metals also hold promise for facilitating large-area exfoliation, their practical application is hindered by oxidation in air. To address this, we fabricate heterostructures of monolayer MoS2 with polycrystalline gold, silver, copper, palladium, cobalt, and nickel via direct mechanical exfoliation of bulk molybdenite under controlled atmospheric conditions. Our photoemission spectroscopy, vibrational s…

Placental transfer efficiencies of multiple metals: Patterns, and influence factors.

Environmental exposure to both toxic heavy metals and essential trace elements during pregnancy can influence fetal development through transplacental transfer. However, comprehensive knowledge of placental transfer efficiency (PTE) across a broad spectrum of metals remains limited. In this study, we quantified multiple metals in 228 paired maternal and umbilical cord blood samples and calculated their placental transfer efficiencies. Based on median PTE values, metals were categorized into four groups: poorly transferred (cadmium (Cd), 40 %; copper (Cu), 44 %; zinc (Zn), 26 %), partially tran…

How metals fuel fungal virulence, yet promote anti-fungal immunity.

Invasive fungal infections represent a significant global health problem, and present several clinical challenges, including limited treatment options, increasing rates of antifungal drug resistance and compounding comorbidities in affected patients. Metals, such as copper, iron and zinc, are critical for various biological and cellular processes across phyla. In mammals, these metals are important determinants of immune responses, but pathogenic microbes, including fungi, also require access to these metals to fuel their own growth and drive expression of major virulence traits. Therefore, ho…

Alkaline earth metals for osteogenic scaffolds: From mechanisms to applications.

Regeneration of bone defects is a significant challenge today. As alternative approaches to the autologous bone, scaffold materials have remarkable features in treating bone defects; however, the various properties of current scaffold materials still fall short of expectations. Due to the osteogenic capability of alkaline earth metals, their application in scaffold materials has become an effective approach to improving their properties. Furthermore, numerous studies have shown that combining alkaline earth metals leads to better osteogenic properties than applying them alone. In this review, …

A New Energy Approach to Predicting Fracture Resistance in Metals.

To ensure the reliability and durability of structural elements, modern approaches require data characterizing the local stress-strain state of the material in risk zones. In order to predict the fracture resistance of structural elements, a theoretical-experimental method based on the damage accumulation model using the energy approach is proposed. One of the unique characteristics of the proposed approach is that it uses local parameters of the stress-strain state, which are determined using a highly accurate and easy-to-use noncontact method of optical-digital image correlation (ODIC). This

Nanoforms of essential metals: from hormetic phytoeffects to agricultural potential.

Vital plant functions require at least six metals (copper, iron, molybdenum, manganese, zinc, and nickel), which function as enzyme cofactors or inducers. In recent decades, rapidly evolving nanotechnology has created nanoforms of essential metals and their compounds (e.g. nZnO, nFe2O3) with a number of favourable properties over the bulk materials. The effects of nanometals on plants are concentration-dependent (hormesis) but also depend on the properties of the nanometals, the plant species, and the treatment conditions. Here, we review studies examining plant responses to essential nanometa…

Effect of Endosymbiotic Bacteria on Fungal Resistance Toward Heavy Metals.

Most studies on metal removal or tolerance by fungi or bacteria focus on single isolates, without taking into consideration that some fungi in nature may be colonized by endobacteria. To address this knowledge gap, we investigated the tolerance and removal of diverse metals with two fungal species: Linnemannia elongata containing Burkholderia-related endobacteria and Benniella erionia containing Mollicute-related endobacteria. Isogenic lines of both species were generated with antibiotic treatments to remove their respective endobacteria. Experiments involved comparing the isogenic lines and w…

In utero deposition of trace elements and metals in tissues.

INTRODUCTION: All animals, including humans, are exposed to heavy metals which are known to accumulate in different tissues, especially in bone. During pregnancy, the maternal bone turnover is increased and the metals in the mother's body can be mobilized into the bloodstream. Heavy metals in maternal blood are known to pass through the placenta to the fetal blood and finally, deposited to bone tissue. However, there are no studies on the concentration of metals in the fetal solid tissues and until now, the rate of metal transfer from mother to fetus is not exactly known. MATERIALS AND METHOD…

A New Method of Testing the Dynamic Deformation of Metals.

This paper presents the characteristics of a modernized rotary hammer equipped with a new measuring system based on strain gauges for recording short-term signals. The stand makes it possible to carry out dynamic tensile and bending tests in the range of linear speed of the exciting element from 5 to 40 m/s. Initial tests of dynamic deformation and structural studies in the form of fractures carried out on a representative group of metallic materials allowed determining the correlation "strain rate-strain structure". The proposed new methodology of dynamic materials testing is an original achi

Impact of Heavy Metals on Human Male Fertility-An Overview.

Heavy metals are endocrine disruptors which interfere with processes mediated by endogenous hormones of the organism, negatively affecting endocrine functions. Some studies have correlated heavy metal exposure with male infertility. However, the number of studies conducted on humans are limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to summarize the current knowledge on how heavy metals influence human male fertility. Hence, three distinct databases were consulted-PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science-using single keywords and combinations of them. The total number of identified articles was 636. Ne…
