AIMS: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by motor disabilities precipitated by α-synuclein aggregation and dopaminergic neurodegeneration. The roles of oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, dysfunction of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway, and apoptosis in dopaminergic neurodegeneration have been established. BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to preliminary evaluate the antiparkinsonian activity of furanocoumarin-xanthotoxin, in two behavioral animal models, zebrafish larvae treated with 6-hydroxydopamine and mice treated with 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine in order to compare both models.
METHODS: Xanthotoxin was isolated from Pastinaca sativa L. (Apiaceae) fruits. Then, the compound was administered by immersion to zebrafish 5 days after fertilization (dpf) larvae or intraperitoneally to male Swiss mice, as a potential therapeutic agent against locomotor impairments.

Thirty-eight patients with plaque-type psoriasis were enrolled in a double-blind psoralen plus ultraviolet A (PUVA) treatment study comparing the efficacy and side effects of 5-methoxypsoralen (5-MOP) and 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP). Forty-two adults with psoriasis vulgaris were treated total body thrice weekly with both ultraviolet B (UVB) and psoralens and ultraviolet A (PUVA) with the use of protocols shown to be effective with either treatment alone. The production of the sunburn cell by UV-A radiation and topical psoralens in hairless mouse epidermis has been studied. It has been shown that the appearance of this cell is dependent on the dose of both UV-A radiation and of the psoralen. The time-course with 8-methoxypsoralen has peak sunburn cell numbers at 28 hr postirradiation. A comparison of 2 bifunctional (8-methoxypsoralen and 5-methoxypsoralen) and 2 monofunctional (angelicin and 3-carbethoxypsoralen) psoralens showed the former are more potent. This suggests that DNA crosslink lesions may play a rle in sunburn cell production.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine the protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid against oxidative damage in rabbit conjunctiva and cornea exposed to ultraviolet radiation.
METHODS: 20 rabbits weighing 2,500- 3,000 g were used, and we divided them into 4 groups with 5 randomly selected rabbits. The rabbits were exposed to 2 J/cm(2)/h of ultraviolet A radiation (UVA) in the range of 320-405 nm for 12 h per day within 90 days. The control group did not undergo any procedure, the UVA group was only exposed to UVA radiation. The PUVA group was treated with 8-methoxypsoralen and UVA.

Photopheresis is a therapy for several T-cell-mediated disorders, aiming at a specific immune response against the pathogenic clone of T cells involved. With photopheresis, a mixture of patients' buffy coat and plasma, which contains 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP), is diluted with saline and exposed to ultraviolet A radiation (UVA). BACKGROUND: Many regimens are used for cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL), but with advanced disease response rates and patient survival are not adequate with any current therapy. Recently extracorporeal photochemotherapy (ECP) was proposed as an alternative therapy.
