The cycle of protein-carboxyl methylation and demethylation was studied in intact blood platelets. Decreased levels of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate have been hypothesized to contribute to increased vulnerability of the ageing or stressed human brain to ischemia. To help to address the question of whether of dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate has a possible neuroprotective effect against ischemic neuronal injury, we tested its effect on the neurodegeneration induced by oxygen-glucose deprivation in rat cultured cerebellar granule cells. Dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate added to the medium after injury demonstrated a neuroprotective effect with a median inhibitory concentration of 0.5 microM.

The prominence of sulfate reducers in mercury biomethylation prompted the examination of the methyl carrier and mercury methylation activity of Desulfovibrio desulfuricans LS. There was a low degree of mercury tolerance and a high degree of methylation during fermentative growth; the opposite was true during sulfate reduction. We have investigated the relaxant effects of propofol on smooth muscle tension in human omental arteries and veins to determine if endothelium-related mechanisms are involved.
