Five explanted posterior chamber lenses were examined under the scanning electron microscope to determine the changes. The intraocular time of the lenses was 1 week to 3 years. The polypropylene loops showed superficial cracks in all cases, but only in the curve and the insertion areas. The findings therefore indicated that the morphological changes are more likely caused by mechanical stress than by biological degradation alone.

The 5 per cent of patients with carcinoma of the lung directly invading the chest wall present a challenge for treatment. Complete resection of all tumor, including the chest wall, should be done. Immediate reconstruction to prevent a flail chest ensures a smooth postoperative course. Excellent palliation and a 46 per cent 5-year survival rate can be achieved if there is no spread to mediastinal lymph nodes.

We have employed a two-stage operative approach to the correction of Crouzon's/Apert's deformity. Extensive use of methyl methacrylate in cranioplasty and frontal bone advancement is employed to obtain finely detailed contours with excellent stability. By adhering to principles of separation of oral contamination and the methyl methacrylate, as well as the provision of adequate soft tissue coverage of the methyl methacrylate, the problems of infection and soft tissue breakdown can be minimized.

Three adult rhesus monkeys were subjected to 2 and 24 hours of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) contact lens wear. The induced corneal changes were examined with the electron microscope. We reported previously the incidence of headache after the retrosigmoid removal of an acoustic neuroma as 23% at 3 months, declining to 9% at 2 years after surgery.
