We reported previously the incidence of headache after the retrosigmoid removal of an acoustic neuroma as 23% at 3 months, declining to 9% at 2 years after surgery. In an attempt to reduce the incidence and the severity of these headaches, we made one change in our surgical procedure, which was to perform a cranioplasty with methyl methacrylate. This article reviews the clinical experience with cryosurgery (use of liquid nitrogen) and acrylic cementation (polymethylmethacrylate; PMMA) in the treatment of aggressive, benign bone sarcomas and the biologic basis of this technique. Cement discoplasty has been developed to treat patients with advanced intervertebral disc degeneration. In discoplasty, poly(methylmethacrylate) (PMMA) bone cement is injected into the disc, leading to reduced pain and certain spinal alignment correction.
