Gut microbiota in obesity and metabolic disorders.

Obesity is a major public health issue as it is causally related to several chronic disorders, including type-2 diabetes, CVD and cancer. Novel research shows that the gut microbiota is involved in obesity and metabolic disorders, revealing that obese animal and human subjects have alterations in the composition of the gut microbiota compared to their lean counterparts. Moreover, transplantation of the microbiota of either obese or lean mice influences body weight in the germ-free recipient mice, suggesting that the gut ecosystem is a relevant target for weight management. Indigenous gut micro

The role of colonic microbiota in lactose intolerance.

In a previous study we observed a clear difference in lactose intolerance symptoms after a 25-g lactose load in two groups of persons with lactase nonpersistence and similar small intestinal lactase activity. From this observation we hypothesized a colon resistance factor. To identify this factor, the microbial composition of fecal samples of the two lactose intolerant groups (one with mild symptoms, n = 16, and one with diarrhea-predominant symptoms, n = 11) was compared using the fluorescent in situ hybridization technique. Large interindividual differences were found in the numbers of total

Megaesophagus microbiota: a qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Bacterial overgrowth in the esophageal lumen in patients with megaesophagus can be the cause of recurring pulmonary infections, infectious complications due to surgical or endoscopic procedures, and the development of dysplasia of the esophageal mucosa and cancer. Despite this, esophageal microbiota in the megaesophagus have never been studied. The aim of this study was to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the microbiota in chagasic megaesophagus in comparison to the normal esophagus. Twenty-five patients (10 men and 15 women), ranging in age from 24 to 74 years (mean years), were prosp

Microbiota of health, gingivitis, and initial periodontitis.

This study compared the subgingival microbiota in periodontal health, gingivitis and initial periodontitis using predominant culture and a DNA probe, checkerboard hybridization method. 56 healthy adult subjects with minimal periodontal attachment loss were clinically monitored at 3-month intervals for 12 months. More sites demonstrated small increments of attachment loss than attachment gain over the monitoring period. Sites, from 17 subjects, showing > or = 1.5 mm periodontal attachment loss during monitoring were sampled as active lesions for microbial analysis. Twelve subjects demonstrated

Mice gut microbiota programming by using the infant food profile. The effect on growth, gut microbiota and the immune system.

During the complementary feeding (CF) period, nutritional imbalances can have negative consequences not only on a child's health in the short term but also later in adulthood, as a phenomenon known as "nutritional programming" takes place. The aim of this study was to evaluate the possible changes in body growth, gut microbiota (GM) and the immune system in mice fed with two different commercial sterilized baby foods in jars (BFJs) for CF. Mice fed with different BFJs (A and B groups) showed an accelerated growth from the fifth week of life when compared with the control (C) group. Group A sho

Investigating the impact of astaxanthin yogurt on gut microbiota and microbiota-mediated astaxanthin conversion using the SHIME® model.

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of astaxanthin yogurt on the gut microbiota using the Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem (SHIME®) in a long-term experiment. Astaxanthin yogurt treatment increased beneficial bacteria, including Mitsuokella, Parasutterella, and Lachnoclostridium in the colon, while suppressing the proliferation of potentially harmful bacteria such as Escherichia_shigella and Stenotrophomonas. Additionally, astaxanthin yogurt facilitated an increase in the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Notably, a progressive decrease in astaxant

[1]The human gut microbiota in IBD, characterizing hubs, the core microbiota and terminal nodes: a network-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis, an imbalance in the bacterial composition of the human gut microbiota, is linked to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Advances in biological techniques have generated vast microbiota datasets, presenting both opportunities and challenges for clinical research in that field. Network theory offers powerful tools to analyze these complex datasets. METHODS: Utilizing genetically unrelated individuals from the Kiel IBD-KC cohort, we compared network properties of the gut microbiota between patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, n = 522) and healthy controls (n = 365)

Protective Effect of Vegan Microbiota on Liver Steatosis Is Conveyed by Dietary Fiber: Implications for Fecal Microbiota Transfer Therapy.

Fecal microbiota transfer may serve as a therapeutic tool for treating obesity and related disorders but currently, there is no consensus regarding the optimal donor characteristics. We studied how microbiota from vegan donors, who exhibit a low incidence of non-communicable diseases, impact on metabolic effects of an obesogenic diet and the potential role of dietary inulin in mediating these effects. Ex-germ-free animals were colonized with human vegan microbiota and fed a standard or Western-type diet (WD) with or without inulin supplementation. Despite the colonization with vegan microbiota

Modulation of the Gut Microbiota to Control Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)-A Narrative Review with a Focus on Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT).

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the greatest challenges facing humanity, causing a substantial burden to the global healthcare system. AMR in Gram-negative organisms is particularly concerning due to a dramatic rise in infections caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL and CPE). These pathogens have limited treatment options and are associated with poor clinical outcomes, including high mortality rates. The microbiota of the gastrointestinal tract acts as a major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (the resistome), and the env

Intestinal microbiota and diabetic kidney diseases: the Role of microbiota and derived metabolites inmodulation of renal inflammation and disease progression.

Diabetic kidney disease (DKD) represents a growing public health burden and is the leading cause of end-stage kidney diseases. In recent years, host-gut microbiota interactions have emerged as an integral part for host homeostasis. In the context of nephropathies, mounting evidence supports a bidirectional microbiota-kidney crosstalk, which becomes particularly manifest during progressive kidney dysfunction. Indeed, in chronic kidney disease (CKD), the "Работает" microbiota structure is disrupted and intestinal microbes produce large quantities of uremic solutes responsible for renal damage; on
