[Translated article] Association Between Demodex Infestation and Severe Acne Vulgaris: A Cross-Sectional Study of 168 Patients.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Infestation with Demodex mites has been associated with acne vulgaris. The aim of this study was to explore the association between Demodex infestation and severe acne vulgaris in outpatients seen at Hospital Regional Lambayeque in Chiclayo, Peru. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 46 patients with severe acne and 92 patients with nonsevere acne. Severe acne vulgaris was diagnosed if the score was 3 or more on the Spanish Acne Severity Scale (EGAE, in its Spanish acronym). Demodex infestation was diagnosed when a skin surface biopsy showed

Demodex folliculorum infestations in common facial dermatoses: acne vulgaris, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Demodex mites are found on the skin of many healthy individuals. Demodex mites in high densities are considered to play a pathogenic role. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between Demodex infestation and the three most common facial dermatoses: acne vulgaris, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis. METHODS: This prospective, observational case-control study included 127 patients (43 with acne vulgaris, 43 with rosacea and 41 with seborrheic dermatitis) and 77 healthy controls. The presence of demodicosis was evaluated by standardized skin surface biopsy in both the patient an

Ursicoptes americanus infestation of American black bears (Ursus americanus) in Virginia, USA.

American black bears (Ursus americanus) admitted to a Virginia rehabilitation center were tested for Ursicoptes americanus. From 2014 to 2023, 23 of 150 (15.3 %) bears were positive with higher prevalence in juveniles and females. Several bears had localized or multifocal, moderate lesions or alopecia consistent with mange; however, some had no clinical signs associated with mange. Several bears were co-infested with Sarcoptes scabiei. These data show that infestation with U. americanus mites is common and does not always cause disease. However, there is a need to understand potential mange-ca

Jasmonic acid is a key regulator of spider mite-induced volatile terpenoid and methyl salicylate emission in tomato.

The tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) mutant def-1, which is deficient in induced jasmonic acid (JA) accumulation upon wounding or herbivory, was used to study the role of JA in the direct and indirect defense responses to phytophagous mites (Tetranychus urticae). In contrast to earlier reports, spider mites laid as many eggs and caused as much damage on def-1 as on wild-type plants, even though def-1 lacked induction of proteinase inhibitor activity. However, the hatching-rate of eggs on def-1 was significantly higher, suggesting that JA-dependent direct defenses enhanced egg mortality or incr

First report of a severe nasopulmonary acariasis caused by Orthohalarachne diminuata Doetschman, 1944 (Acari: Halarachnidae) in a captive South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens Shaw, 1800).

Obligatory endoparasitic mites of the genera Halarachne Allman, 1847 and Orthohalarachne Newell, 1947 (Acari: Halarachnidae) parasitize different segments of the respiratory tract of marine mammals, including pinnipeds and sea otters, and infestations can cause asymptomatic to serious respiratory diseases. However, knowledge on biology, pathogenic potential and occurrence of halarachnid mites infesting pinnipeds, especially in captivity, is scarce. A two-year-old South American sea lion (Otaria flavescens Shaw, 1800) male, born and held at the Vienna Zoo, was anesthesized for routine pre-trans

Significance of terpenoids in induced indirect plant defence against herbivorous arthropods.

Many plants respond to herbivory by arthropods with an induced emission of volatiles such as green leaf volatiles and terpenoids. These herbivore-induced plant volatiles (HIPVs) can attract carnivores, for example, predators and parasitoids. We investigated the significance of terpenoids in attracting herbivores and carnivores in two tritrophic systems where we manipulated the terpenoid emission by treating the plants with fosmidomycin, which inhibits one of the terpenoid biosynthetic pathways and consequently terpenoid emission. In the 'lima bean' system, volatiles from spider-mite-infested f

Density of itch mite, Sarcoptes scabiei (Acari: Sarcoptidae) and temporal development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in swine mange.

Experimental infestations of Sarcoptes scabiei (De Geer) were established to study development of cutaneous hypersensitivity in pigs. Forty-eight pigs in six isolation rooms were used in two trials lasting 51 and 65 days, respectively. Treatments of 0 (control), 100 (low dose), and 1000 mites (high dose) per pig were randomly assigned to rooms. Intradermal skin tests with a sterile mite extract were done weekly to assess hypersensitivity. Control pigs never responded to the extract, whereas most infested pigs progressed through phases of (1) no response, (2) delayed hypersensitivity alone, (3)

Ivermectin-compounded Feed Compared with Topical Moxidectin-Imidacloprid for Eradication of Demodex musculi in Laboratory Mice.

Demodex musculi is a prostigmatid follicular mite that has rarely been reported in laboratory mice. Although prevalence of this species has not been assessed formally, we have found that many imported mouse strains from noncommercial sources harbor Demodex mites. To assess whether an acaricide can be used to eradicate this mite, infested immunocompromised mice were provided ivermectin-compounded (12 ppm) feed without restriction for 8 wk (n = 10), were treated topically with moxidectin and imidacloprid (MI; 3 and 13 mg/kg, respectively) weekly for 8 wk (n = 10), or remained untreated (n = 10).

This "mite" Surprise You: Scabies Masquerading as Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Scabies is a common parasitic infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei. Scabies can mimic other entities clinically, resulting in misdiagnosis. The presence of a mite in the stratum corneum on biopsy specimens is diagnostic of scabies. However, there are instances when mites are not visible, and immunohistochemical (IHC) staining may be misleading. An example is when IHC demonstrates Cluster of Differentiation 1a and S100 positivity. The main differential diagnosis for this finding is Langerhans cell histiocytosis, a group of idiopathic disorders of bone marrow-derived La

Environmental persistence and control of the nasopulmonary mite Halarachne halichoeri: Implications for sea otter rehabilitation.

Nasopulmonary mite infestations are increasingly recognized as a potential contributor to respiratory disease and secondary infections in southern sea otters (Enhydra lutris nereis), yet the environmental persistence and control of these parasites remain poorly understood. We conducted controlled in vitro time-to-event survival experiments to evaluate the persistence of larval Halarachne halichoeri under varying environmental conditions and the efficacy of disinfectants and alternative treatments relevant to marine mammal rehabilitation facilities. We also evaluated the in vitro acaricidal eff…

External parasites of raptors (Falconiformes and Strigiformes): identification in an ex situ population from Mexico.

Raptorial birds harbor a variety of ectoparasites and the mayority of them are host specific. The aim of this study was to identify the ectoparasites of captive birds of prey from Mexico, as well as to verify their impact in the health of infested birds. Raptorial birds were confiscated and kept in captivity at the Centro de Investigación y Conservación de Vida Silvestre (CIVS) in Los Reyes La Paz, Mexico State. Seventy-four birds of prey (66 Falconiformes and eigth Strigiformes) of 15 species were examined for the presence of ectoparasites. We examined both juvenile and adult birds from both

Transmission of Demodex flagellurus (Acari: Demodicidae) in the house mouse, Mus musculus, under laboratory conditions.

Transmission of Demodex flagellurus Bukva, 1985 inhabiting the preputial and clitoral glands of the house mouse, Mus musculus L., was studied in mating experiments using pairs of infested, feral X mite-free, white laboratory mice. Spontaneous transfer of mites between sexually active hosts of the opposite sex, presumably through copulation, is reported for the first time for the hair-follicle mites under controlled conditions. Transfer of mites from host mother to her progeny was also proven. A comparatively low transmission effectiveness was observed in both modes of transmission, being 9.5%

Preliminary trials using a macrocyclic lactone against psoroptic scabies of cattle.

A macrocyclic lactone, LL-F28249 alpha, C36H52O8, was evaluated as a one- or two-injection treatment in different formulations and concentrations against cattle infested with Psoroptes ovis (Hering). One injection of 2 mg kg-1 or two injections of 1 mg kg-1 of 3% active material in either an aqueous or oil formulation failed to eliminate all of the mites. A single injection of 3 mg kg-1 as a 5% aqueous formulation eliminated all mites for 35 days post-injection. At lower dosages of the aqueous formulation (3%), the male mites appeared to be less susceptible to the acaricide than either the fem

Evaluation of an ELISA using recombinant Ssλ20ΔB3 antigen for the serological diagnosis of Sarcoptes scabiei infestation in domestic and wild rabbits.

An ELISA, based on the Sarcoptes scabiei Ssλ20ΔB3 inmunodominant antigen, was evaluated for the detection of antibodies to S. scabiei in experimentally infested (n=10), farm (n=109), and wild (n=78) rabbit sera. The S. scabiei antigen Ssλ20ΔB3, a major structural protein present over the entire mite's body, was produced as a recombinant protein in Escherichia coli and purified for its use in the ELISA. The resulting ELISA showed, in experimentally infested domestic rabbits, detectable specific antibody responses (IgG) above the cut off level from week three post-infestation indicating that the

Efficacy of plant-based remedies for Varroa destructor control in honey bee colonies: A preliminary study.

The Western honey bee (Apis mellifera L.) plays a crucial role in global ecosystems and agriculture, yet the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor remains a primary cause of severe varroosis and significant colony morbidity and mortality. Current reliance on synthetic acaricides often leads to the development of mite resistance and raises concerns regarding chemical residues in hive products. This has created an urgent need for innovative and effective veterinary strategies for parasite control. This study investigated the efficacy of traditional plant-based remedies as an alternative treatment

Rapid method for the detection of storage mites in cereals: feasibility of an ELISA based approach.

This paper describes the development of rapid immunodiagnostic tests for the detection of storage mite infestations in cereals and cereal products. The study's first phase (proof of concept) involved the production of a species-specific enzyme-linked immunoassay (ELISA) for the flour mite, Acarus siro (L.), a major pest of stored commodities. The specificity of this new assay was assessed against key stored product contaminants (13 species of mites of which three were predatory, five species of insects and five species of fungi) in the presence and absence of grain. The assay was species-speci…
