The aim of this review is to evaluate the health and social effects of accessible home environments for people with functional limitations, in order to provide evidence to promote well-informed decision making for policy guideline development and choices about public health interventions. MEDLINE and nine other electronic databases were searched between December 2014 and January 2015, for articles published since 2004. All study types were included in this review. Two reviewers independently screened 12,544 record titles or titles and abstracts based on our pre-defined eligibility criteria. We

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature on whether sleep impacts mobility in adults.
METHODS: Ovid Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and CINAHL databases were searched. Citations were randomly divided so that each was screened separately by 2 authors. Data were extracted from included articles independently by 2 reviewers.
RESULTS: The search strategy generated 8,772 references, 697 articles underwent full-text screening, and 108 eligible articles were included in the scoping review. Most studies (n = 69; 64%) included only self-reported sleep, and "walking" was the most common mobility category

There are normal physiologic changes that occur as people age. Gait and mobility are altered with aging, and these changes are a combination of alterations in the gait pattern and in the function of organs. Changes in gait are associated with functional decline, less independence, and impaired quality of life. Reduced walking speed is the most consistent age-related change, but there are other contributors to an altered gait: impaired balance and stability, lower extremity strength, and the fear of falling.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing has increased the burden of cardiometabolic multimorbidity (CMM), defined as the presence of two or more cardiometabolic diseases. Functional mobility is a marker of systemic ageing and adverse health outcomes, but its association with CMM remains unclear among Chinese adults.
METHODS: Data were from 16,032 adults aged ≥45 years in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011-2018). Functional limitation was assessed using Activities of Daily Living and a seven-item mobility scale. The primary exposure was a standardised composite score based on the e

Objective: To compare estimates of the prevalence of mobility and physical function limitations by race and ethnicity using data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS). Method: The sample comprised of 28,854 adults aged ≥60 from the MEPS (2004-2013). Physical function (limitations in basic and instrumental activities of daily living [ADL/IADL]) and mobility limitations were assessed by self-report. Results: Non-Hispanic Whites (NHWs) represented the majority of the sample followed by non-Hispanic Blacks (NHBs), Hispanic and non-Hispanic Other (Other). For mobility limitation, NHBs ha…

BACKGROUND: CDC estimated that 19.4 million (7.8%) US adults are living with mobility impairment, who are unable to walk a quarter mile. Ind … mobility status. Autoregressive models were used to assess the longitudinal effect of the onset of mobility limitation on these outcomes.
RESULTS: Those with impaired mobility fared significantly higher on negative affect (p < .05) and pessimism (p < .05), and significantly lower on life satisfaction (p < .05) and positive affect (p = .001). In terms of coping, the …

Ferroelectric semiconductors are promising for multifunctional electronics, yet their typically low carrier mobilities remain a major limitation. Using first-principles phonon-limited transport calculations for monolayer In2Se3, we show that this limitation depends critically on the microscopic origin of ferroelectricity. In displacive β'-In2Se3, low-frequency ferroelectric modes dominate carrier scattering, with additional contributions from longitudinal-optical (LO) phonons, limiting the room-temperature electron mobility to a few cm2/(V s). By contrast, in fractional-quantum ferroelectric α

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the links between knee pain characteristics and restricted mobility outside the home, and how these are influenced by mobility-specific activity limitation, age, sex, socioeconomic status, environmental factors, and comorbidity.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of community-dwelling adults age > or = 50 years. A total of 2,252 responders reporting pain in and around the knee in the last year were eligible. The primary outcome was self-reported restricted mobility outside the home in the previous 4 weeks (dichotomized as present or absent).
RESULTS: Kne

INTRODUCTION: While group, task-oriented, community-based exercise programs (CBEPs) delivered in-person can increase exercise and social participation in people with mobility limitations, challenges with transportation, cost and human resources, threaten sustainability. A virtual delivery model may help overcome challenges with accessing and delivering in-person CBEPs. The study objective is to estimate the short-term effect of an 8-week, virtual, group, task-oriented CBEP called TIME™ (Together in Movement and Exercise) at Home compared with a waitlist control on improving everyday function i…

OBJECTIVES: To investigate associations between a widely used measure of self-assessed health (limiting long-term illness, LLTI) and 11 long-term health conditions.
METHODS: Information on LLTI and health conditions was obtained from 2011 Census returns for a 28% representative sample of the Northern Ireland population (n = 342,868). Logistic regression was used to predict LLTI by sex and age group for each condition found in isolation, adjusting for marital status, social class, household car access, housing tenure, and educational attainment. The relationship between limitation and multimor

PURPOSE: Many patients suffer long term loss of mobility after hip fracture but there is no gold standard method for measuring mobility in this group. We aimed to validate a new mobility outcome measure, the de Morton Mobility Index (DEMMI) in a hip fracture population during inpatient rehabilitation.
METHOD: The DEMMI was compared with the existing measures of activity limitation: 6 minute walk test, 6 metre walk test and Barthel Index on 109 consecutive patients admitted to rehabilitation after surgery for hip fracture. Patients were assessed by a physiotherapist at admission and discharge.

The prevalence of 15 common obesity-related chronic health conditions was examined in a convenience sample of adolescents, ages 12-18 years old, with mobility and non-mobility limitations (n = 208 and 435, respectively). In both groups, overweight adolescents (BMI ≥ 85th %ile) had a significantly higher number of obesity-related chronic health conditions than their counterparts with healthy weight status (2.74 versus 1.74 for the mobility limitation group, and 1.79 versus 1.45 for the non-mobility limitation group). Prevalence of high blood cholesterol was significantly higher among overweight…

BACKGROUND: Cut-points to define slow walking speed have largely been derived from expert opinion.
METHODS: Study participants (13 589 men and 5043 women aged ≥65years) had walking speed (m/s) measured over 4-6 m (mean ± SD: 1.20 ± 0.27 m/s in men and 0.94 ± 0.24 m/s in women.) Mobility limitation was defined as any self-reported difficulty with walking approximately 1/4 mile (prevalence: 12.6% men, 26.4% women). Sex-stratified classification and regression tree (CART) models with 10-fold cross-validation identified walking speed cut-points that optimally discriminated those who reported mobi…
