Theories pertaining to the "why" of motion sickness are in short supply relative to those detailing the "how." Considering the profoundly disturbing and dysfunctional symptoms of motion sickness, it is difficult to conceive of why this condition is so strongly biologically based in humans and most other mammalian and primate species. It is posited that motion sickness evolved as a potent negative reinforcement system designed to terminate motion involving sensory conflict or postural instability. During our evolution and that of many other species, motion of this type would have impaired evolu…

While humans have experienced motion sickness symptoms in response to inertial motion from early history through the present day, motion sickness symptoms also occur from exposure to some types of visual displays. Even in the absence of physical motion, symptoms may result from visually perceived motion, which are often classified as effects of visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). This paper provides a brief discussion of general motion sickness and then reviews findings from three lines of recent VIMS investigations that we have conducted.

Cortical-surface-based functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging mapping techniques and wide-field retinotopic stimulation were used to verify the presence of pattern motion sensitivity in human area V6. Area V6 is highly selective for coherently moving fields of dots, both at individual and group levels and even with a visual stimulus of standard size. This stimulus is a functional localizer for V6. The wide retinotopic stimuli used here also revealed a retinotopic map in the middle temporal cortex (area MT/V5) surrounded by several polar-angle maps that resemble the mosaic of small areas found a…

STUDY DESIGN: Repeated measures of cervical motion in asymptomatic subjects.
OBJECTIVES: To introduce a virtual reality (VR)-based assessment of cervical range of motion (ROM); to establish inter and intratester reliability of the VR-based assessment in comparison with conventional assessment in asymptomatic individuals; and to evaluate the effect of a single VR session on cervical ROM.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Cervical ROM and clinical issues related to neck pain is frequently studied. A wide variety of methods is available for evaluation of cervical motion. To date, most methods rely on…

A framework for inpainting missing parts of a video sequence recorded with a moving or stationary camera is presented in this work. The regi … -of-the-art algorithms that deal with similar types of data and constraints. It permits some camera motion, is simple to implement, fast, does not require statistical models of background nor foreground, works well in the presence of rich and cluttered backgrounds, and the results show that there is no visible blurring or motion artifacts. Many studies have documented that first-order motion influences perceived position. Here, we show that second-order (contrast defined) motion influences the perceived positions of stationary objects as well. We used a Gabor pattern as our second-order stimulus, which consisted of a drifting sinusoidal contrast modulation of a dynamic random-dot background; this second-order carrier was enveloped by a static Gaussian contrast modulation. Two vertically aligned Gabors had carrier motion in opposite directions. Subjects judged the relative positions of the Gabors' static envelopes. The positions …

Motion sickness is not only elicited by certain kinds of self-motion, but also by motion of a visual scene. In case of the latter, optokinetic drums are often used and a visual-vestibular conflict is assumed to cause the sickness. When the rotation axis is Earth vertical however, different studies show different results. Here, we propose that visual-vestibular conflicts per se do not cause sickness whereas subjective vertical mismatch theory can reconcile the disparate findings. The theory attributes the nausea induced by horizontal optokinetic stimulation to the subjects self-inducing pseudo-…

After an observer adapts to a moving stimulus, texture within a stationary stimulus is perceived to drift in the opposite direction-the traditional motion aftereffect (MAE). It has recently been shown that the perceived position of objects can be markedly influenced by motion adaptation. In the present study, we examine the selectivity of positional shifts resulting from motion adaptation to stimulus attributes such as velocity, relative contrast, and relative spatial frequency. In addition, we ask whether spatial position can be modified in the absence of perceived motion. Results show that w…

BACKGROUND: There are large individual differences in susceptibility to motion sickness. Attempts to predict who will become motion sick have had limited success. In the present study, we examined gender differences in resting levels of salivary amylase and total protein, cardiac interbeat intervals (R-R intervals), and a sympathovagal index and evaluated their potential to correctly classify individuals into two motion sickness severity groups.
METHODS: Sixteen subjects (10 men and 6 women) flew four sets of 10 parabolas aboard NASA's KC-135 aircraft. Saliva samples for amylase and total pro…

Cases in which salient visual stimuli do not register consciously are known to occur in special conditions, such as the presentation of dissimilar stimuli to the two eyes or when images are stabilized on the retina. Here, we report a striking phenomenon of 'visual disappearance' observed with normal-sighted observers under natural conditions. When a global moving pattern is superimposed on high-contrast stationary or slowly moving stimuli, the latter disappear and reappear alternately for periods of several seconds. We show that this motion-induced blindness (MIB) phenomenon is unlikely to ref…

Human observers are not normally conscious of blur from moving objects [Nature 284 (1980) 164]. Several recent reports have even shown that blurred images appear sharper when drifting than when stationary and have suggested different non-linear mechanisms to explain this phenomenon [Vision Res. 36 (1996) 2729; Vision Res. 38 (1998) 2099]. We demonstrate here that even though distortions of drifting narrow-band sine-wave gratings cannot be explained by linear mechanisms, these mechanisms may have an important role in sharpening of moving edges. We show first that the effective spatial filter fo

Semantic factors are presumed to have little influence on motion perception. Two experiments examined the effects of an object's semantic identity on motion correspondence using the Ternus paradigm. Motion correspondence was not influenced by whether the object depicted is typically moving or stationary, but it was influenced by the way(s) in which an object's components typically move relative to one another: perceived correspondence differed depending on whether the motion tokens constituted the feet of a person walking or the wheels of a car. Apparently, semantic knowledge can influence mot…

It commonly is observed that focal hand dystonias, such as writer's cramp or musician's cramp, are associated with repetitive movements, alt … lated to reduced cortical inhibition. Recent studies in primates support the notion that repetitive motions can induce plasticity changes in the sensory cortex leading to degradation of topographic representations of the hand, and raise the possibility that sensory training may be beneficial. Current treatment options for focal dystonia include botulinum …

Coriolis effects are notorious in relation to disorientation and motion sickness in aircrew. A review is provided of experimental data on these Coriolis effects, including the modulatory effects of adding visual or somatosensory rotatory motion information. A vector analysis of the consequences of head movements during somatosensory, visual and/or vestibular rotatory motion stimulation revealed that the more the sensed angular velocity vector after the head movements is aligned with the gravitoinertial force vector, the less nauseating effects are experienced. It is demonstrated that this is a…

Nerve compression in repetitive motion disorders is being recognized with increasing frequency. The pathophysiology of chronic nerve compression spans a broad spectrum beginning with subperineurial edema and progressing to axonal degeneration. These changes depend on the amount and duration of the compressive forces. Certain postures or positions in the upper extremity will increase pressures around certain nerves increasing pressure exposure. Evaluation of these patients with chronic nerve compression should include examination at all levels of potential entrapment in the upper extremity to i…

Documentation of causality between repetitive motions and musculoskeletal disorders calls for detailed understanding of the exposure variables and the corresponding physiologic responses in the biologic tissues. Quantification of the kinetics in some jobs characterized by repetitive motions is summarized with the physiologic responses in the muscles. Muscle activity pattern was studied in different shoulder muscles or muscle parts, and in elbow and wrist flexor muscles. Activity pattern was dependent on the kinetics of the work requirements. This holds true for the compound electromyographic s…
