Epidemiology of Subcutaneous Mycoses in Northeast India: A Retrospective Study.

BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous mycoses, although rare, are frequently reported from northeast India. Their spectrum varies with geographic region. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated clinical records and histopathological features of subcutaneous mycoses cases seen during April 2013 to March 2017. RESULTS: A total of 70 patients (44 males and 26 females) of subcutaneous mycoses were analyzed. Sixty-one percent of patients were 20-60 years old. Duration of the disease ranged from 3 months to 25 years. Most common site of involvement was the lower limb (32, 46%), followed by the upper limb (25, 36%)…

Molecular diagnosis of invasive mycoses of the central nervous system.

In September 2012, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began investigating an outbreak of fungal meningitis among patients … ak highlighted the need for rapid and reliable methodologies to assist in the diagnosis of invasive mycoses of the central nervous system (IMCNS), which may be devastating and difficult to treat. In this paper, we review the causative agents of these potentially-lethal infections, which include cryptococcal meningitis, cerebral aspergillosis, and hematoge …

Molecular diagnosis of endemic and invasive mycoses: advances and challenges.

The diagnosis of endemic and invasive fungal disease remains challenging. Molecular techniques for identification of fungi now play a signif … and extensive clinical trials. Similar efforts should be implemented for the diagnosis of the other mycoses in order to fully validate the current methods or reinforce the need to design new ones. This manuscript is part of the series of works presented at the "V International Workshop: Molecular genetic approaches to the study of human pathogenic fungi" …

[Current epidemiology and laboratory diagnosis of endemic mycoses in Spain].

Histoplasmosis and paracoccidioidomycosis are emerging infections in Spain associated with immigration and travelling. In last three decades a total of 128 cases of histoplasmosis have been reported in Spain, 59 in travellers, 63 in immigrants, three associated to drug abuse, two in laboratory workers, and one in a solid organ transplant receptor. In 1969 the first Spanish case of paracoccidioidomycosis was published and a total of 21 cases have been reported so far. Those patients suffered from the chronic form of the disease with period of latency as long as 50 years. Other endemic mycoses s…

Rare mycoses of the oral cavity: a literature epidemiologic review.

Stomatologic fungal infections display different etiologies, pathogenesis, and clinical presentations. The incidence of rare mycoses of oral cavity is very low. These infections can involve both immunocompromised and immmunocompetent patients with common predisposing factors, such as diabetes or suffering from diseases causing immune system impairment. Oral mycoses can cause acute, chronic, and mucocutaneous lesions. Candidiasis is the most common mouth mycosis. Although occasionally primary mouth pathogens, Cryptococcus spp. or filamentous fungi (Aspergillus spp. and zygomycetes) can cause or…

Epidemiology of mycoses in the HIV-infected patient: clinical aspects.

Among the major problems confronting patients with AIDS are opportunistic fungal infections. Primary infections include candidiasis, cryptococcosis, the major endemic mycoses, and aspergillosis. The endemic mycoses of AIDS consist of Histoplasma found mostly in the U.S. and Latin America, Coccidioides in parts of Latin America and the southwest U.S., Penicillium marneffei in Thailand and other parts of southeast Asia, and Blastomyces worldwide. The latter, however, has so far been rare in AIDS. The major endemic mycoses tend to target patients very late in AIDS, with CD4 counts commonly below …

[The most common pathogens in opportunistic mycoses and their clinical manifestations].

The most frequent pathogens of opportunistic mycotic infections are Candidae. The clinical manifestation of infection is very varied. With regard to the extent of the affection the following are differentiated: 1. mucocutaneous candidosis, 2. organ affections and 3. disseminated candidosis. The incidence of mycoses caused by Aspergillae, cryptococci, and mucors is of a lower order, these infections are, however, associated with a relatively higher mortality. The authors review briefly different fungi and describe the most important clinical manifestations of infection.

Disseminated mycoses in cattle. A study on nine autopsy cases.

Nine cases affected with disseminated mucormycosis (1.3% of all autopsy cases and 20.0% of systemic mycosis) were found among bovine systemic mycosis examined from 1975 to 1985. The disseminated lesions were found in the lungs (3 cattle), heart (2 cattle), liver (2 cattle), spleen (1 beef cattle), kidneys (1 cattle), central nervous system (1 cattle) and lymph node (1 cattle). Histological examination revealed granulomatous lesions, necrotic foci including infarcts, and thromboangiitis with the hyphae of a member of the Zygomycetes and neutrophil reaction. Granulomatous lesions with asteroid b

A clinico-radiological study of secondary mycoses in pulmonary tuberculosis.

Clinical and radiological differences were compared in Fungus positive (74) and negative (66) cases of pulmonary tuberculosis. Cough, expectoration, dyspnoea, and fever were marked in former group than that of latter. Anaemia, leucocytosis, raised ESR, abnormal radiological shadows and mycetoma in healed cavity were also noted in significant number in fungus positive cases.

Immunofluorescence staining of hyphae in the histopathological diagnosis of mycoses in cattle.

An immunofluorescence staining system was developed for the identification of mycelial fungi causing systemic mycoses in cattle. Antisera to Absidia corymbifera, Aspergillus fumigatus, Aspergillus flavus, and Aspergillus niger were raised in rabbits. Tissue sections of experimentally infected mice were used to determine the specificity of immune staining with antisera that had been absorbed with heterologous antigens. When 46 lesions from 22 cattle with systemic mycosis were studied, the infecting agent could be classified as a zygomycete, possibly A. corymbifera, in 18 lesions (15 cattle), A.…

[The esterase activity of the peripheral blood in patients with foot mycoses].

Nonspecific esterase activities were measured in the peripheral blood phagocytes (neutrophils and monocytes) of 37 patients with mycoses of the soles. The measurements have revealed lowered potentials of alpha-naphthylacetate esterase, naphthol-AS-acetate esterase, and naphthol-AS-D-chloracetate esterase, which appears to be due to depressed leucocyte phagocytic activity. Diucifon therapy corrected this metabolic imbalance.

Laboratory and clinical assessment of ketoconazole in deep-seated mycoses.

Forty-eight cases of deep mycoses were studied and treated with ketoconazole, each with in vitro evaluation of the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the causative fungi, in vivo pharmacokinetic, clinical, and mycologic evaluations, several months to two years after the treatment was stopped. Excellent results were obtained in six cases of chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis, with restoration of immunologic disturbances; 23 cases of systemic candidiasis, including new aspects of heroin addicts with cutaneous, ocular, or osteoarticular manifestations; eight cases of histoplasmosis, five d…
