[Urogenital myiasis caused by Psychoda albipennis].

Myiasis cases are often encountered in humans, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. Urogenital myiasis is one of the facultative myiasis cases that may be seen in humans. Psychoda albipennis is an insect species that causes urogential myiasis in humans Adults of this species, belongs to the Psychodidae subfamily, lives especially in humid toilets and domestic bathrooms. This case, presented as urogenital myiasis caused by P. albipennis in a fifteen year old male. Primary oral myiasis: a case report.

Myiasis commonly refers to invasion of live human or animal tissue by fly larvae of the Diptera order where they complete their cycle totally or in part, feeding on living or dead tissue, as well as on body fluids. Infestation of tissues of vertebrate species is pandemic but more frequently found in tropical and subtropical countries where poor hygiene, poor housing infrastructure, warm humid climate, and proximity with domestic animals prevail. Its diagnosis is made basically by the presence of larvae. The present paper reports a case of gingival myiasis involving 14-16 larvae in a 12-year-ol…

Human myiasis in Fars Province, Iran.

We evaluated the prevalence and consequences of human myiasis among people involved in animal husbandry and butchers among 6 counties in Fars Province, Iran using a descriptive cross sectional survey. A semi-structured questionnaire was used to evaluate knowledge, community perceptions and practices. Three hundred two herders shepherds and butchers were included in the study. Eighty-eight point three percent of subjects had experienced myiasis during their job experiences. Seventy-one point five percent had become infected in barns. Pharyngeal myiasis was reported by 87% of subjects. The most …

[Accidental genital myiasis by Eristalis tenax].

Myiasis is a parasitic infestation of human or animal skin, necrotic tissues and natural cavities by fly larvae or pupa. In this paper we will describe the case of a 27 years old woman, asymptomatic, that spontaneously eliminated from her vagina two Eristalis tenax larvae, a worldwide distributed fly specie, classified as an accidental myiasis agent. The patient lived in an urban area, she had low socioeconomic status and she had the antecedent record of use of intravaginal vegetables as sexual stimulator. Analyzing the case and the references, we concluded the patient had an accidental infest…

Primary oral myiasis: a case report.

Myiasis is the infestation of live human and vertebrate animal with dipterous larvae which feed on the host's dead or living tissue. A case of oral myiasis in the maxillary anterior region in a 42-year-old female with neurologic deficit caused by the larvae (maggots) of Musca Nebulo (Family Diptera) is reported. The treatment consisted of manual removal of the larvae by topical application of turpentine oil, oral therapy with ivermectin and surgical debridement of the oral wound.

[Human cutaneous myiasis: a case report].

Myiasis is a self-limiting infestion of tissues by fly larvae commonly referred as maggots. A case of cutaneous myiasis in a 61 year old woman admitted to the Department of Emergency of S. Giovanni Hospital in Rome (Italy) is reported in the present note. The patient, a religious sister, returned to Rome from a mission trip of few weeks in Edea (Cameroon, Africa), was suffering from a subclavicular furuncular skin lesion; one maggot was surgically removed and submitted for parasitological examination. Based on the maggot shape and size, the travel history and the clinical presentation, a maggo…

Urogenital myiasis due to Chrysomyia bezziana.

Genitourinary myiasis, associated with ulcerating lesions and poor hygiene of the local site, has been infrequently reported. We report a case of 45 year-old urinary incontinent female suffering from carcinoma cervix, who presented with genitourinary myiasis. The larva was identified as of Chrysomyia bezziana Villeneuve (C. bezziana).

Cutaneous myiasis caused by Cordylobia anthropophaga.

Cutaneous myiasis is a temporary parasitic infestation of the skin of human and other vertebrates by fly larvae, primarily species of the flies Dermatobia and Cordylobia. In Central and South America cutaneous myiasis is mainly caused by the larvae of Dermatobia hominis; in Africa it is mostly due to the larvae of Cordylobia spp. We describe a case of cutaneous myiasis in a family who returned to Slovenia from a three-week trip to Ghana. The parasites, in tumor-like swellings about 1-2 cm in diameter and 0.5-1 cm high, were removed from the back of the 48-year-old man, the nose, shoulder and w…

Furuncular myiasis secondary to Dermatobia hominis.

Dermatobia homininis is the most common cause of furuncular myiasis in Central and South America. It is diagnosed based on a history of travel to an endemic region and the characteristic cutaneous lesion. We present a 54-year-old patient who presented with both a travel history and cutaneous findings of furuncular myiasis.

Healthcare-associated myiasis: prevention and intervention.

Healthcare-associated myiasis (maggot infestation) can have complications that go well beyond the medical consequences of the infestation for patients, their families, and facilities. Prevention of healthcare-associated myiasis requires effort on two fronts: minimizing patient risk factors and reducing fly populations in the healthcare environment. If myiasis occurs, intervention must be swift, thorough, and interdisciplinary. The first priority always is the well-being of the patient. Preservation and identification of the maggots can help determine the likely timing and circumstances that le…

Oral myiasis by screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax.

We report a rare case of periodontal myiasis by New World screwworm Cochliomyia hominivorax, an obligatory larval parasite, in a 66-year-old woman. The myiasis occurred in the anterior upper jaw associated with a pre-existent generalised periodontitis. About 40 larvae were removed from the lesion. One week later the periodontal tissues were healing normally and the patient was referred to a periodontist. As all of the larvae were in the last stage, they were probably deposited 5-7 days before.

Subcutaneous myiasis caused by Dermatobia hominis.

A case of subcutaneous myiasis caused by the larvae of the Dermatobia hominis fly is described, involving the ankle region of a 25-y-old man who had returned from Peru. After removal of 4 larvae from the affected sites, the lesions healed in 2 weeks without further treatment. Because of the increasing number of people travelling to tropical America, physicians in Slovenia will have to consider Dermatobia myiasis in the differential diagnosis of furuncular lesions in patients with a relevant travel history.

Botfly infestation (myiasis) masquerading as furunculosis.

With air travel so prevalent, diseases endemic to certain regions may appear anywhere. The botfly (Dermatobia hominis) is not native to North America. We describe a case of a young boy and his father who presented with furunculosis secondary to infestation with the botfly. The infected patients live in South Florida and had been vacationing in Central America. Standard surgical treatment as well as multiple native remedies are described.
