Nail changes are visible in a variety of inflammatory dermatoses. The commonest dermatological condition with nail manifestations is chronic plaque psoriasis. This two-part article reviews the nail signs in psoriasis in Part 1, and the nail changes in cutaneous lichen planus and alopecia areata in Part 2. It provides a brief summary of the salient points in the clinical features, management and prognosis of these entities, with practical recommendations that may be beneficial to all dermatologists.

BACKGROUND: Of all nail disorders seen in dermatology offices, half of them are due to onychomycosis. The main differential diagnosis is nail psoriasis. The objective of this study was to compare the microscopic findings, other than the presence of fungi, in the clipping of onychomycosis versus normal nails and nail psoriasis.

We present the results of using the Marchetti-Vicenzi nail in the management of 41 closed and 16 type I-III open tibial fractures in 56 patients. The treatment goals were to achieve stability and fracture alignment allowing early functional treatment of the knee and ankle by immediate partial or full weight-bearing. Early callus formation and rapid mobilisation were obtained in 84% of the patients. 22 fractures of the humerus (15 traumatological, 7 pathological) were treated with the Seidel-Nail. The results after a follow-up between 4 and 20 months showed good mobility of the shoulder. As major complications two paresis of the radial nerve occurred. One disappeared spontaneously. The Seidel-Nail is a good implant for all kind of shaft fractures with an intact distal fragment of 5 cm and also for fractures of an intact humerus head.

UNLABELLED: We analyzed the relationship between knee pain after tibial nailing and nail prominence. We identified 70 patients in our trauma registry with healed fractures initially treated with intramedullary nails. Subjective pain and function were measured with visual analog pain scales and Lysholm knee scores at a mean of 20 months after fracture.
