Patient autonomy in advance care planning for Parkinson's disease: Systematic review with narrative synthesis.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience delays in initiating advance care planning (ACP) and palliative care (PC) which can impact their autonomy as cognitive function declines. Because patient autonomy and decision-making in ACP and PC for individuals with PD is insufficiently explored, this systematic review with narrative synthesis aims to fill this gap by reviewing the existing literature on these topics. It examines how awareness and timing influences ACP and PC implementation, how illness narratives shape decision-making and autonomy perceptions and the rol

Fishing community resilience to harmful algal blooms: social capital narratives of the 2016 crisis in southern Chile.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) represent a critical environmental challenge for coastal social-ecological systems, generating risks to human health, livelihoods, food security, and ecosystem services. The unprecedented 2016 HAB crisis in southern Chile, triggered by the northward expansion of the paralytic toxin-producing dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella, caused extended fishing closures and severe socio-economic disruptions across artisanal fishing communities in the Los Lagos and Los Ríos regions. Despite effective monitoring and management systems that largely prevented human poisoning, pr

Associations between coherence and temporal parameters of narrative speech production in borderline personality disorder.

Narrative speech production (NSP), i.e., the conceptualization, linguistic formulation, and articulation of a story, is a multifaceted process underpinned by cognitive functions and mentalization ability, often impaired in individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study examines differences in coherence and temporal parameters between individuals with BPD and healthy controls (HCs) and explores associations between these factors in both groups. Spontaneous speech of 33 BPD and 31 HC individuals was recorded in three task types (telling their previous day, retelling a story,

Patterns of Loneliness in Digital Narratives: A Snapshot Analysis of Reddit Posts with Implications for Mental Health Nursing.

Loneliness is a multifaceted phenomenon linked to adverse mental and physical health outcomes, increasingly understood as a relationally embedded experience shaped by sociocultural, cognitive, and emotional factors. While previous research has predominantly relied on surveys and clinical tools, emerging approaches recognize the value of unsolicited narratives shared on digital platforms. This snapshot study examines 498 Reddit posts from the subforums r/lonely and r/offmychest, using a publicly available annotated dataset to examine perceived causes and intensities of loneliness. Each post was

Sociocultural aspects of the medicalisation of infertility: a comparative reading of two illness narratives.

This paper is a comparative reading of variations in the medicalisation of infertility caused by sociocultural aspects, in two illness narratives by patients: Elizabeth Katkin's Conceivability (2018), a story of navigating a fertility industry with polycystic ovarian syndrome and antiphospholipid syndrome in America and Rohini Rajagopal's What's a Lemon Squeezer Doing in My Vagina (2021), a discussion from India of a growing awareness of medicalisation in treatment of unexplained infertility. For this purpose, it first charts scholarship on illness narratives and medicalisation, noting a histo

Online environmental scan and content analysis of social stories about needle procedures.

UNLABELLED: Needle procedures are often difficult for autistic children. Preparatory education is an evidence-based strategy that is especially important for autistic children given they commonly struggle with unpredictability. Carol Gray developed Social Stories to walk autistic children through new/challenging situations step-by-step. Although needle-related Social Stories exist online, no research has investigated whether their content aligns with best practices for needle pain and fear management and Gray's guidelines for Social Story development. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characteri

Following Fibroids: An Analysis of Social Media Narratives.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Many patients with uterine fibroids turn to social media for information, where fibroid-related content has grown substantially. To effectively address misconceptions and deliver high-quality, patient-centered care, physicians should be aware of the online information their patients encounter. This study analyzes fibroid-related content on social media to better understand the information being consumed. METHODS: The top 100 "liked" posts using "#fibroids" were identified on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok using a third-party web scraping tool. Post demographics and

The Illness Narratives of Children and Young People With Spinal Muscular Atrophy: A Scoping Review.

AIM(S): This review seeks to explore the illness narratives of children and young people focusing on their healthcare trajectories; the right to health; and the kind of stories told about them. DESIGN: This scoping review adopts a narrative approach to analyse how the illness experience of Spinal Muscular Atrophy is represented in the literature, moving beyond biomedical descriptions to consider sociocultural and historical dimensions. We explore how global and local forces shape everyday life and therapeutic possibilities for people with this condition. METHODS: Four online databases were u

Health Management and Time-Use With Tetraplegia: A Narrative Inquiry.

Little is known about time-use related to health management of individuals with tetraplegia (motor and/or sensory loss originating in the cervical spine) and the influence on participation in occupations. The purpose was to explore the time-use of an individual with tetraplegia to understand factors that contributed to changes in health-management routines over time. Narrative inquiry was used to collect data via observation, time-use log, and interviews. Five interpretive stories emerged: Caregivers, Relationships, and Learning Self-Efficacy; Framing the Morning Routine with Positive Thinking

Updated systematic-narrative review on communication intervention in Rett Syndrome: 2010-2022.

Due to loss of spoken language and resulting complex communication needs, people with Rett syndrome are obvious candidates for communication intervention. To advance evidence-based practice and guide future research efforts, we identified and summarized 16 communication intervention studies published since a previous 2009 review on this topic. Studies were summarized in terms of (a) participants, (b) dependent variables related to communication, (c) intervention characteristics, (d) outcomes, and (e) certainty of evidence. Across the 16 studies, intervention was provided to a total of 100 part

The autistic experience of homelessness: Implications from a narrative enquiry.

Recent research suggests many autistic people experience homelessness. However, little is known about the types of homelessness autistic people experience and what barriers autistic people face when trying to exit homelessness. This study involved gathering life stories of autistic people who had experienced homelessness. Ten autistic participants talked about their pathways through homelessness and the difficulties they had in accessing support. After first becoming homeless, participants tended to experience rough sleeping and sofa surfing. When participants approached housing and homelessne

Bodies in lockdown: Young women's narratives of falling severely ill with ME/CFS during childhood and adolescence.

Thirteen women (16-30 years) storied their experiences about the process of falling severely ill with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome during childhood and adolescence. We performed a narrative analysis informed by phenomenology which yielded three central themes: The active and meaningful life I used to live; gradually developing unhomeliness and feeling pushed toward the edge; and left abandoned on the sidelines. Out of the incomprehensible and unpredictable emerges an understanding of the scale of their ordeal, along with advice that may have made it worse. This portrays a

Short report. Narrative competence in Italian preschool children with sex chromosome trisomies.

BACKGROUND: The neuropsychological profile of children with sex chromosome trisomies [SCTs] is frequently characterised by delays and impairments in language development. However, no studies so far have specifically investigated their narrative competence. AIMS: The aim of the study was to analyse the oral narrative competence of preschool children with SCTs due to the importance of this skill for language development and learning abilities. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Participants were 34 Italian children with SCTs one-to-one matched by age and sex to typically developing [TD] children. A story

Comparison of Veterinary Student Understanding of Extrahepatic Portosystemic Shunts When Given a Pre-Lecture Activity of a Text-Only Narrative versus an Interactive Electronic Book.

Complex vascular anomalies are often difficult concepts for veterinary medical students to comprehend, as knowledge of normal anatomy, visualization of the abnormal anatomy, and understanding of the physiologic implications of that abnormality are all required to appreciate the clinical impacts of the anomaly. Access to interactive 3D models of both the normal and abnormal vasculatures may improve student comprehension. In this study, third-year veterinary medical students in a core small animal digestive diseases course completed a pre-lecture assignment consisting of a text-only narrative (n

Transportation into an Entertainment Narrative about the MMR Vaccine: An Investigation of Self-Referencing and Issue-Related Thoughts in Narrative Persuasion.

The current study considers how an entertainment narrative about childhood vaccination influences related attitudes. We consider the role of counterarguing in narrative persuasion by integrating extant research and theory to test cognitive mechanisms of narrative persuasion, namely self-referencing and positive issue-related thoughts. Results of this experiment show that exposure to a television narrative depicting the importance of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine led to more favorable attitudes toward childhood vaccination as compared to a control group. As expected by narrative

Narrative comprehension and production abilities of children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11DS) is associated with language deficits and weak intellectual functioning. In other clinical groups, linguistic and cognitive difficulties have been associated with impaired acquisition of narrative abilities. However, little is known about the narrative abilities of children with 22q11DS. AIMS: To describe the ability of children with 22q11DS to produce and comprehend narrative macrostructure. Additionally, to examine the role of intellectual functioning in explaining their narrative difficulties. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Narrative skills of 1

Internal clock and the surgical ICU patient.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The alteration of circadian rhythms in the postoperative period has been demonstrated to influence the outcomes. With this narrative review we would revise how anesthesia, surgery and intensive care can interfere with the circadian clock, how this could impact on the postsurgical period and how to limit the disruption of the internal clock. RECENT FINDINGS: Anesthesia affects the clock in relation to the day-time administration and the type of anesthetics, N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists or gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors agonists. Surgery causes stress and trau

Gathering Trauma Narratives: A Qualitative Study on the Impact of Self-Identified Traumas on People Living with HIV (PLWH).

BACKGROUND Trauma-emotional, physical, and psychological-is common and associated with increased risk behaviors, low rates of care engagement and viral suppression, and overall poor health outcomes for people living with HIV (PLWH). This article presents the results of 15 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with PLWH in the Southeastern United States in which participants identified a trauma and described its long-lasting impact on their lives. Participants' trauma narratives described a wide range of traumas, including childhood sexual abuse, the loss of a loved one, and their HIV diagnosis.

Praying to win this battle: Cancer Metaphors in Latina and Spanish Women's Narratives.

This study closely examines 51 breast cancer narratives Latina and Spanish women wrote for other patients to illuminate how they conceptualize their health, with insights for addressing health disparities. Using discourse analysis of the role of language and culture in health care communication, this study focuses on the use of metaphors in the narratives. This provides revelations about the cultural and linguistic aspects of how the writers conceptualize their disease. Building on past research on metaphor use in cancer discourse in the English language, this study reveals the prevalence of m

Fixed Nodes of Transience: Narratives of Homelessness and Emergency Department Use.

Discourse in popular media, public policy, and academic literature contends that people who are homeless frequently make inappropriate use of hospital emergency department (ED) services. Although researchers have investigated the ED experiences of people who are homeless, no previous studies have examined how this population understands the role of the ED in their health care and in their day-to-day lives. In the present study, 16 individuals participated in semistructured interviews regarding their ED experiences, and narrative analysis was applied to their responses. Within the context of na
