Endoscopic surgery for recurrent undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

One of the biggest challenges for otolaryngologists is represented by the locally recurrent undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma (uNPC). Despite improvements in its treatment options, such as modern radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or external surgical approaches, the risk for severe complications, functional disabilities, and even death remains considerable. Over the years, advances in endoscopic surgery have led to a new alternative in the salvage surgery for recurrent uNPC: the nasopharyngeal endoscopic resection (NER). We retrospectively reviewed clinical records of 8 patients (6 men and 2

Nasopharyngeal microbiota in healthy children and pneumonia patients.

Our study is the first to compare the nasopharyngeal microbiota of pediatric pneumonia patients and control children by 454 pyrosequencing. A distinct microbiota was associated with different pneumonia etiologies. Viral pneumonia was associated with a high abundance of the operational taxonomic unit (OTU) corresponding to Moraxella lacunata. Patients with nonviral pneumonia showed high abundances of OTUs of three typical bacterial pathogens, Streptococcus pneumoniae complex, Haemophilus influenzae complex, and Moraxella catarrhalis. Patients classified as having no definitive etiology harbored

Delayed presentation of an undiscovered nasopharyngeal foreign body.

Suspected paediatric aerodigestive tract foreign body (FB) ingestion or aspiration is a commonly encountered emergency. Management may require a general anaesthetic for retrieval with bronchoscopy, laryngoscopy and oesophagoscopy, each dependent on the history and investigations of the case in question. We describe the case of a foreign body, which was missed in the nasopharynx for more than 3 years and also discuss how pressures on National Health Service (NHS) referral and follow-up patterns may have altered the time course of the eventual discovery.

ERBB3 as an independent prognostic marker for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

AIM: Although the ERBB proteins have been shown to be associated in many types of human tumours and serve as important cancer therapeutic targets, however, data regarding the expression and clinical relevance of ERBBs in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) are still conflicting. The aim of this study is to investigate the expression pattern of all ERBB members simultaneously in NPC tissues using immunohistochemistry and determine their clinical relevance. METHODS: The expression of all members of ERBB proteins was evaluated using immunohistochemistry on 82 NPC tissue samples. Relationship between

The impact of breastfeeding on nasopharyngeal microbial communities in infants.

RATIONALE: Breastfeeding elicits significant protection against respiratory tract infections in infancy. Modulation of respiratory microbiota might be part of the natural mechanisms of protection against respiratory diseases induced by breastfeeding. OBJECTIVES: To study the association between breastfeeding and nasopharyngeal microbial communities, including all cultivable and noncultivable bacteria. METHODS: In this observational study, we analyzed the microbiota of infants that had received exclusive breastfeeding (n = 101) and exclusive formula feeding (n = 101) at age 6 weeks and 6 mont

Melena revealing a nasopharyngeal leech: a paediatric case.

Leech infestation occurs after swimming or ingestion of freshwater, especially in rural areas. Symptoms are different depending on the binding site of the leech. At the nasopharynx, it is mainly responsible for epistaxis. We report a case of an unknown pharyngeal location of a leech in a three year-old girl responsible for melena and leading to a severe anaemia.

Bilateral juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma: report of a case.

BACKGROUND: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is the most common benign neoplasm of the nasopharynx. Almost always unilateral on diagnosis, JNAs are locally invasive and may extend across the midline, giving a false bilateral appearance; as such, true bilateral JNA is exceedingly rare. We present a recent case of true bilateral JNA. METHODS: Single case report of a patient with bilateral JNA, including clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management. RESULTS: The patient presented with unilateral nasal obstruction and recurrent epistaxis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma presenting as a palatal swelling.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a rare, benign, highly vascular and locally aggressive tumor that predominantly occurs in adolescent males. Usually the presenting symptom is a painless nasal obstruction or epistaxis; however, other symptoms may depend on the size and extent of the tumor mass. Owing to the vascularity of the tumor, incisional biopsy is not attempted and the diagnosis is, therefore, dependent on multiplanar imaging modalities such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and angiography. These also help to assess the tumor mass, pre-operative embolization

Microspheres embolization of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma in an adult.

INTRODUCTION: Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma (JNA) is a benign though locally aggressive, highly vascular tumor primarily affecting adolescent males which has traditionally posed a significant intraoperative challenge during its resection due to the high risk of uncontrollable hemorrhage. Pre-operative angiographic embolization of the major feeding vessels to the tumor has become a valuable, even necessary, tool in the surgical treatment of these lesions. PRESENTATION OF CASE: Our patient was a 32-year-old man with a chief complaint of recurrent left-sided epistaxis for one year, brisk

Stridor: an unusual presentation of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a rare and benign disease, which is mainly found in adolescent male subjects. It is usually diagnosed on clinical grounds on the basis of its presenting symptoms of nasal obstruction, nasal mass and most importantly unprovoked recurrent moderate to severe epistaxis. Imaging studies are only needed to confirm the diagnosis and formulate the management plan. A case of juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is presented here, which presented to us with severe respiratory distress and stridor. Urgent tracheostomy had to be performed before definitive management could b

Prognostic value of kisspeptin expression in nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The KiSS-1 gene has been reported to serve as a metastasis suppressor gene in various human malignancies. However, no information is available regarding the role of the KiSS-1 gene or its gene product kisspeptin in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study. METHODS: Kisspeptin and its receptor AXOR12 expression were assessed using immunohistochemistry in paraffin-embedded tumor tissues from 140 patients diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Immunoreactivity was quantified, and its relationships with patients' clinical parameters and survival were a

Post-treatment late complications of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT) is not only effective at patients' survival rates, but also produces undesirable late complications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the post-treatment late complications in nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, and to analyze the individual impact factors. We enrolled 188 newly diagnosed NPC patients who had received complete treatments and at least 3 years' follow-up between March 1984 and March 2010. Late complications were modified from the Toxicity Criteria of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group and the European

Recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma masquerading as acoustic neuroma.

This is the first report of recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) presenting as a cerebellopontine angle mass. The clinical presentation, investigation and management of this case, as well as the confusion and dilemma caused, are discussed. We hope to increase awareness on the multifaceted ways in which recurrent NPC could present and to share the lessons learnt from our management of this unusual and unfortunate case.

Computed tomographic features of feline nasopharyngeal polyps.

The computed tomographic (CT) findings of histopathologically confirmed nasopharyngeal polyps are described in 13 cats. Most polyps were mildly hypoattenuating to adjacent muscles and isoattenuating to soft-tissue (n= 13), homogeneous (n = 12) and with ill-defined borders (n = 10) on precontrast images. After contrast medium administration, the polyps were homogeneous (n = 11), with well-defined borders (n = 13), oval (n = 13), and had rim enhancement (n = 13). Nasopharyngeal polyps were pedunculated in 11 cats with a stalk-like structure connecting the polyp through the auditory tube to an af

Activation of AKT is associated with metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Although radiotherapy results of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) at an early stage are better than other tumors, there is still a portion of patients with NPC who die before 5 years after the treatment; the underlying mechanism remains to be further understood. This study aims to investigate the mechanism by which NPC cells escape from irradiation. Patients with NPC at stage I was included in this study. All the patients were treated with irradiation. NPC biopsies were obtained from each patient before and 1 week after the start of radiotherapy. Expression of AKT in NPC tissue was assessed by W

[MRI findings delay the diagnosis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

This report concerns a 55-year-old female patient who presented with headache, dry right eye and dry nose on the right side. After 5 months magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was carried out but no pathological findings were diagnosed. Right-sided facial pain appeared 6 months later and a second MRI was carried out but only fluid retention in the right mastoid was diagnosed. After a further 8 months paresis of the right abducent nerve occurred and a computed tomography (CT) scan of the petrous bone showed extensive destruction of the apex of the petrous pyramid. Subsequently a third MRI revealed

Pituitary duplication with nasopharyngeal teratoma and cleft palate.

Pituitary gland duplication is a rare malformation of unknown cause that is often associated with a nasopharyngeal teratoma, among other secondary malformations. This clinical report describes a case of pituitary gland duplication with a nasopharyngeal teratoma, cleft palate, and hypothalamic hamartoma, as well as the surgical management of this patient. This case also raises the question of whether the nasopharyngeal teratoma is the cause of the pituitary duplication above and the cleft palate below or whether it is a result of the primary duplication of the notochordal process. Various theor
