Skin Cancer in Solid Organ Transplant Recipients: A Review for the Nondermatologist.

Solid organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) are at increased risk for the development of skin cancer compared with the general population, which requires consistent monitoring and management from a multidisciplinary team. The aim of this review is to provide a comprehensive overview for nondermatologist clinicians, outlining skin cancer diagnosis, treatment pearls, and skin cancer prevention strategies as they relate to SOTRs. A comprehensive search of the literature was conducted through the MEDLINE database with search terms including organ transplantation, transplant recipient, skin cancer, c

The incidences of other primary cancers in patients with mycosis fungoides and Sézary syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCLs) are a diverse group of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas with malignant T lymphocytes infiltrating the skin. Mycosis fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) belong to the group of CTCLs, among others. In previous studies it was suggested that primary cancers more often occur in patients with cutaneous lymphoma. AIM: To analyse the incidence of other malignancies in CTCL patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The evaluation of the coexistence of primary malignant neoplasms in CTCL patients was conducted by analysis of the patients' database, with diagnosis of m

Basal cell adenoma in the deep portion of the parotid gland: a case report.

Basal cell adenoma (BCA) is a rare, benign neoplasm that most frequently arises in the parotid gland. We treated a 54-year-old female patient with BCA that had developed in the deep portion of the left parotid gland. The patient presented with gradual facial swelling with no other symptoms. We performed a total parotidectomy to excise the mass, but we preserved the facial nerve. Histopathology revealed a well-encapsulated mass. The tumor was composed of islands of comparatively uniform, small, dark, basaloid epithelial cells in the stroma. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies concluded t

Basal cell adenocarcinoma arising from the minor salivary gland in the soft palate: a case report.

Basal cell adenocarcinomas (BCACs) of the oral minor salivary gland are very rare neoplasms. We report on an 86-year-old woman with BCAC arising from the minor salivary gland in the soft palate. Histologically, the tumor was located in the submucosa and showed microinvasion into the adjacent soft tissue without encapsulation. It contained tiny tumor islands with solid and tubular patterns, as well as myxoid stroma. The neoplastic cells were basaloid cells and were composed of large pale cells and small dark cells. They were positive for alpha-smooth muscle actin, cytokeratin 14, and vimentin i

Ultrastructural aspects of mucinous (colloid) breast carcinoma.

Seven cases of mucinous (colloid) breast carcinoma were studied by electron microscopy. In addition to the predictably abundant mucosubstance production, the following observations merit elaboration: 1) absence of myoepithelial differentiation and basal lamina deposition, 2) notably developed cytoplasmic filamentous systems and relatively scarce lysosomes, 3) frequent and apparently well-developed intercellular junctions, and 4) a distinct paucity of vessels in the tumors' stroma. The rather favorable clinical prognosis of mucinous breast carcinoma despite the absence of myoepithelial differen

Gross, cytological and histological features of a cholangiocarcinoma, with immunolabelling of cytokeratin 19, in a bronze-winged parrot (Pionus chalcopterus).

An adult bronze-winged parrot (Pionus chalcopterus) was presented for post-mortem examination following death without antecedent clinical signs. Macroscopically, the liver was expanded by a 14 × 12 × 10 mm, off-white to grey, infiltrative mass with 3-8 mm diameter nodular masses on the serosa of the duodenum. Cytology of impression smears of the hepatic mass revealed a monomorphic population of epithelial cells, arranged in cohesive clusters, occasionally with an acinar-like arrangement. Histologically, the neoplasm was unencapsulated, infiltrative, well-demarcated and moderately densely cellu

Cytokeratin 10 (CK10) expression in cancer: A tissue microarray study on 11,021 tumors.

Cytokeratin 10 (CK10) is a type I acidic low molecular weight cytokeratin which is mainly expressed in keratinizing squamous epithelium of the skin. Variable levels of CK10 protein have been described in squamous carcinomas of different sites and in some other epithelial neoplasms. To comprehensively determine the prevalence of CK10 expression in normal and neoplastic tissues, a tissue microarray containing 11,021 samples from 131 different tumor types and subtypes was analyzed by immunohistochemistry. CK10 immunostaining was detectable in 41 (31.3 %) of 131 tumor categories, including 18 (13.

One-stage reconstruction of full-thickness lower eyelid using a Tripier flap lining by a septal mucochondral graft.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most frequent cutaneous neoplasm of the periorbital region. After tumor excision, the function of the eyelid has to be preserved, keeping the protection of the eyeball with preservation of damp, avoiding epiphora and ectropion. The authors describe the reconstruction, in a single surgical procedure, of a full-thickness defect of the outer half of the free edge of the lower eyelid through free chondromucosal graft of the septum and Tripier flap. There are very few cases that describe the septal chondromucosal flap in eyelid reconstruction. This case also corrob

Photodynamic therapy remodels cutaneous tumor immunity: innate priming, suppressive feedback, and translational opportunities.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an established local treatment for actinic keratoses, Bowen disease, and selected low-risk basal cell carcinomas, but its potential to reshape antitumor immunity may extend its value beyond direct phototoxicity. We conducted a narrative synthesis of clinical, translational, and mechanistic evidence, supplemented by targeted searches through August 2026, and appraised major findings using a three-level evidence-maturity framework. Current evidence supports a temporally organized model in which PDT-induced reactive oxygen species promote tumor and microvascular inju

Novel labial adnexal sebaceous basaloid proliferation associated with sebaceous epitheliomas and adenocarcinomas in Labrador retrievers.

A distinctive peritumoral epithelial proliferation was identified exclusively in the labial region of Labrador retrievers in association with sebaceous neoplasms. To characterize this lesion, 515 sebaceous neoplasms diagnosed in dogs of different breeds between 2017 and 2025 were retrospectively reviewed. Among these, 2 of 255 epitheliomas (0.7%) and 22 of 41 adenocarcinomas (54%) arising in the lips exhibited a distinctive peripheral basaloid epithelial proliferation. The lesion was observed only in the lower lip of Labrador retrievers, occurring in association with either solitary or multifo

Use of Ber-EP4 protein in recurrent metastatic basal cell carcinoma: a case report and review of the literature.

The occurrence of metastatic basal cell carcinoma (MBCC) is extremely low, ranging from 0.0028 to 0.5%. We present a rare case report of MBCC in a 57-year-old Caucasian male with a known history of numerous nonmelanoma cutaneous neoplasms. The patient presented with a large ulcerated right axillary mass that recurred 2 months after an initial BCC was resected from the same site. An excisional biopsy of the recurrent mass and regional lymph nodes showed atypical basaloid cells with hyperchromatic nuclei, stromal retraction and rare squamous features in the soft tissue and lymph node. The tumor

Expression of podoplanin in nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome-associated keratocystic odontogenic tumours.

BACKGROUND: Keratocystic odontogenic tumour (KCOT) is a benign oral neoplasm of odontogenic origin. The majority of KCOT develop sporadically. The main differential diagnosis of KCOT is from other odontogenic cysts and ameloblastoma. In the rare nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS, synonym: Gorlin(-Goltz)-Syndrome), however, KCOTs are frequently detected and may be the initial sign of this clinical syndrome. Podoplanin is a mucin-type transmembrane protein found in podocytes of human kidneys homologous to T1α-2. The expression of podoplanin in some other non-endothelial tissues raised

Bronchiolar adenoma-like lesions with atypical features beyond the classic morphological spectrum: integrating histomorphology and molecular profiles.

Bronchiolar adenoma (BA) is a rare benign pulmonary neoplasm defined by a bilayered architecture with a continuous basal cell layer. Increasingly, BA-like lesions with atypical features have been recognized, challenging established diagnostic boundaries and raising questions regarding their malignant potential. In this study, we investigated the clinicopathological and molecular characteristics of such lesions. We retrospectively analyzed 19 BA-like lesions that retained at least focal classic BA morphology and exhibited one or more predefined atypical features, including basal cell hyperplasi

High resolution dermal ultrasound (US) combined with superficial radiation therapy (SRT) versus non-image guided SRT or external beam radiotherapy (XRT) in early-stage epithelial cancer: a comparison of studies.

BACKGROUND: To compare the effectiveness of high-resolution dermal ultrasound (US) guided superficial radiotherapy (SRT) to non-image-guided radiotherapy in the treatment of early-stage Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC). METHODS: A high-resolution dermal ultrasound (US) image guided form of superficial radiation therapy (designated here as US-SRT) was developed in 2013 where the tumor configuration and depth can be visualized prior to, during, and subsequent to treatments, using a 22 megahertz (MHz) dermal ultrasound (US) with a doppler component. We previously published the results using this

Non-melanoma skin cancer.

Non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) comprises basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma, together with a host of rare tumours. NMSC is the commonest malignancy among Caucasians and its incidence continues to rise annually. Exposure to UV radiation initiates approximately 90% of NMSC, causing malignant transformation of keratinocytes and suppression of the inflammatory response. Risk factors include sun exposure and immunosuppression. There are several subtypes of BCC, although histological overlap is common. Surgery has traditionally been regarded as the 'gold-standard' treatment, off
