Hip arthroplasty has become the standard treatment for end-stage hip disease, allowing pain relief and restoration of mobility in large numbers of patients; however, pain after hip arthroplasty occurs in as many as 40% of cases, and despite improved longevity, all implants eventually fail with time. Owing to the increasing numbers of hip arthroplasty procedures performed, the demographic factors, and the metal-on-metal arthroplasty systems with their associated risk for the development of adverse local tissue reactions to metal products, there is a growing demand for an accurate diagnosis of s

The patient was a 32 year-old man who was first seen in 2003 for 2 years hearing loss. On otoscopic examination, a whitish mass could be observed through the intact tympanic membrane. High resolution computed tomography showed a tumor like lesion in the middle ear with no evidence of bone destruction. A tympanomastoidectomy was performed. Light microscopy showed fragments of cellular tissue in which both glandular and trabecular growth pattern could be identified Immunohistochemical examinations showed positive staining of the tumor cells for cytokeratin and chromogranin. BACKGROUND: Teratomas are rare types of germ cell neoplasms composed of various differentiated or undifferentiated tissues.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 25-week-old female control FVB /n mouse in a 4-week toxicity study presented abdominal distension and poor body condition. It was euthanized, and the necropsy examination revealed a large mass connected to the tip of the right uterine horn, occupying the entire abdominal cavity. Microscopically, this mass showed areas of epidermal differentiation, with laminated keratin and sebaceous glands, differentiation into respiratory and digestive epithelium, c

Radiography is the mainstay for initial evaluation of paediatric foot and ankle pathology. MRI is the preferred exam for further characterisation of the majority of these conditions. The modality features high sensitivity and specificity for this purpose with few exceptions. Findings on MRI will often dictate patient referral and further management, and are frequently required for surgical planning. This article will provide an overview of a variety of pathologies that afflict the foot and ankle in children. These include tarsal coalition, osteochondral lesions, osteonecrosis, osteochondroses,

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare neoplasms, usually arising from somatic soft tissues or peripheral nerves. Primary MPNST of the scalp is extremely rare, with only a single case reported so far. Here, we describe an unusual case of scalp MPNST in a 50-year-old male. The tumor was associated with bony projection, intracranial extension and underlying bone destruction. The tumor was treated with complete surgical excision followed by adjuvant radiotherapy. Histologically, the tumor showed malignant spindle cells with focal S-100 positivity on immunohistochemistry and a

The clinicopathologic features of three examples of mesenchymal hamartoma of the chest wall are described. The entity has been recorded under a number of names including osteochondroma, osteochondrosarcoma, benign chondroblastoma, mesenchymoma, and chondromatous hamartoma. The condition is manifest at birth or shortly thereafter with deformity of the chest wall and respiratory distress. Radiographic examination reveals a well-defined, partly calcified mass involving one or more ribs. The tumor is composed predominantly of chondroid tissue with large endothelium-lined blood spaces and immature

AIMS: Ectomesenchymal chondromyxoid tumour (ECT) is a rare, benign intraoral neoplasm showing a predilection for the anterior dorsum of the tongue. The World Health Organization includes ECT in the pathological spectrum of soft tissue myoepithelioma. EWS RNA-binding protein 1 gene (EWSR1) rearrangement is found in 45% of cutaneous, soft tissue and bone myoepithelial neoplasms, and pleomorphic adenoma gene 1 (PLAG1) aberrations are found in 37% of EWSR1-negative soft tissue myoepitheliomas. The aim of this study was to evaluate the presence of EWSR1 and PLAG1 rearrangements in ECTs.

BACKGROUND: The increasing number of young colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors has led to ongoing concerns about the risk of secondary primary malignancies (SPMs). Here, we intended to comprehensively explore the pooled standardized incidence rates (SIRs) for total and site-specific SPMs in CRC survivors with different restriction to lag period.
METHODS: Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of science databases were searched to identify any studies reporting the SIRs of SPM following CRC until August 2021. Total and site-specific SIRs with different restriction to lag period were pooled us

Somatic mutations in isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1) and IDH2 occur in gliomas and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). Since patients with multiple enchondromas have occasionally been reported to have these conditions, we hypothesized that the same mutations would occur in cartilaginous neoplasms. Approximately 1200 mesenchymal tumours, including 220 cartilaginous tumours, 222 osteosarcomas and another ∼750 bone and soft tissue tumours, were screened for IDH1 R132 mutations, using Sequenom(®) mass spectrometry. Cartilaginous tumours and chondroblastic osteosarcomas, wild-type for IDH1 R132, were

BACKGROUND: Primary bone and soft tissue sarcomas are rare tumors requiring wide surgical resection and reconstruction to achieve local control. Postoperative complications can lead to delays in adjuvant therapy, potentially affecting long-term oncologic outcomes. Understanding postoperative complication risks is essential; however, past studies are limited by small sample sizes.
PURPOSE: This study uses a large national registry to characterize the incidence of complications and mortality in the first thirty days following surgical management of primary bone and soft tissue sarcomas of the e

56 year old male who was diagnosed of Prostatic Neoplasm by transrectal biopsy after elevated PSA level was found by chance in a routine control. The initial extension study with abdominal and pelvic CT did not show significant radiological abnormalities. This was followed by a whole body bone scintigraphy with 99mTc-MDP that showed a solitary hypermetabolic lesion within skull. A SPECT study placed this lesion at the left occipital region. An MRI and a CT head scan were carried out to characterize the isotopic lesion, finding no bone abnormalities to justify the mentioned uptake. Given the ab

Hypercalcemia is a rare complication of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), usually seen in the accelerated or blastic phases of the disease and associated with a poor prognosis. T-cell lymphoid phenotype is also an infrequent finding in the blast crisis (BC) of CML. A CML patient who had hypercalcemia as the presenting feature of a T-cell BC is reported. She was a 78 year-old woman who, at four months of CML diagnosis, developed weakness, bone pain, and mental confusion, with hypercalcemia being subsequently found. Although the peripheral blood and bone marrow were consistent with the chronic pha

Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the bone. Rarely, osteosarcomas occur at sites other than the bone, so-called extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS). ESOS is a rare malignancy that accounts for approximately 1% of all tissue sarcomas and present most commonly as a large soft tissue mass in the extremities. The patient was an 18-year-old Japanese man who presented with a stony hard mass in the left submandibular region. Fine-needle aspiration biopsy could not be performed due to the firmness of the mass. The patient underwent left selective neck dissection after enlarge

Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs) are malignant disorders originating from clonal expansion of a single neoplastic stem cell and characteristically show an increase in bone marrow reticulin fibers. Lysyl oxidases (LOXs) are copper-dependent amine oxidases that play a critical role in the biogenesis of connective tissue by crosslinking extracellular matrix proteins, collagen and elastin. Expression of LOX gene family members is increased in disorders associated with increased fibrosis. To evaluate involvement of LOX gene family in various MPNs. In-situ hybridization was used to detect Lysyl-O

Myofibroblastic tumors are fairly recently established soft tissue neoplasms. Although most of them appear to be benign, myofibrosarcoma of the soft tissue, seemingly their malignant counterpart, have been reported. We describe the clinicopathologic and radiologic features of four cases of myofibrosarcoma arising from the bone. All but one of the patients were women ranging in age from 60 to 71 years. Two tumors occurred in the metaphyses of distal femurs and the others arose in the iliac bones. On radiologic examination all tumors exhibited well-demarcated lytic destructive lesions without pe

The treatment of carcinomas of oropharynx and oral cavity has changed rapidly over the last 15 years due to the progress of surgical technics and of oncological knowledge. As far as natural history and therapy are concerned, there are two opposing types of cancer: 1. Carcinomas developing from a mucous membrane covering a lymphoid tissue (cancers of the tonsil, some cancers of the palate and the base of tongue). Treatment is usually by radiotherapy, and surgery is mainly resorted to if radiotherapy fails. Therapeutic trials of chemotherapy are in progress. 2. Carcinomas developing from a mucou

BACKGROUND: Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare clonal neoplasm driven by activating mutations in the MAPK pathway, leading to accumulation of pathological Langerhans cells in various tissues. LCH is increasingly associated with secondary malignancies, including leukemias, lymphomas, and solid tumors. However, chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) has not previously been reported in association with LCH. Here, we describe a rare case of CML arising in the setting of active LCH in a pediatric patient.
CASE: A 15-year-old boy was initially diagnosed at age 11 with single-system multifocal sk
