Melanoma is the most common malignant tumor in which melanin synthesis occurs, although other nonmelanocytic tumors synthesize melanin or contain nonneoplastic melanocytes. We present two cases of infiltrating pigmented squamous cell carcinoma of the skin and review the clinical, morphologic, and ultrastructural features. Melanin was found in epithelial tumor cells as well as in macrophages and dendritic melanocytes. Interestingly, one of the neoplasms was associated with an adjacent melanocytic nevus and pigmented solar keratosis. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that neoplastic cells stai

The association between viruses and skin cancer is increasingly recognized in a number of neoplasms, that is, cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, Kaposi sarcoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma, as well as hematolymphoid malignancies such as adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and NK/T-cell lymphoma (nasal type) and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders. Molecular assays are increasingly used to diagnose and manage these diseases. In this review, molecular features of tumor viruses and related host responses are explored. The tests used to identify such features are summa

INTRODUCTION: Lymphomas are a heterogeneous group of malignant neoplasms of lymphocytes and their precursor cells. Lymphoma is seen 3.5% of all intraoral malignancies and is the second most common neoplasm after the squamous cell carcinoma in the head and neck region. Diffuse large B-cell lymphomas (DLBCL), which is a subtype of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, are seen mostly in the paraoral region.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 82-year-old woman was referred with a localised swelling of the mandibular buccal mucosa for 3 months. Excisional biopsy revealed the diagnosis of DLBCL in the mandible and chemotherap

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is a good treatment option for epithelial neoplasms, especially when localized in areas where tissue conservation is crucial, such as the nail unit (NU). MMS is a method of radical excision offering high cure rates due to the margin control and functional preservation. Our aim is to provide a review on the use of MMS for the treatment of the most common nail tumours. We revised the current literature on the use of MMS to treat malignant neoplasms (Bowen's disease, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, keratoacanthoma, carcinoma cuniculatum) an

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a common sun-induced precancerous neoplasm confined to the epidermis. The AK is the initial manifestation of a continuum of clinical and histologic abnormalities that progresses to invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Bowen's disease, also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ, represents early SCC confined to the epidermis. More than half of all SCCs contain p53 tumor suppressor gene mutations. Like SCCs, the vast majority of AKs and Bowen's disease lesions are asymptomatic. Each AK and suspicious lesion should be treated before it progresses to invasive SCC. D

Two unusual cases of metastatic head and neck carcinoma to the exit site of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube are reported. These patients presented with squamous cell carcinomas of the supraglottic larynx and oropharynx. In both patients, a PEG tube was inserted using the "pull" technique prior to any extirpative measures. Within 9 months after surgical treatment, each patient was diagnosed with metastatic squamous cell carcinoma at the PEG tube exit site. A review of the literature revealed three cases of metastatic head and neck neoplasms to a PEG site and a single case repor

To obtain quantitative information on the risk of invasive cancers following a diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) of the skin, patients with incident BCC cases listed in the cancer registries of the Swiss cantons of Vaud and Neuchâtel between 1974 and 1994 were actively followed up through December 31, 1994, for the occurrence of subsequent invasive neoplasms. Among 11,878 persons with incident BCC who were followed for a total of 76,510 person-years at risk, 1,543 metachronous cancers were observed versus 1,397.9 expected, corresponding to a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.1 (95%

INTRODUCTION: Squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis is a rare neoplasm, accounting for less than 0.8% of malignant renal tumors. Chronic irritation is believed to be the primary pathogenic cause for squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis. The most frequently reported cases of squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis generally present with hydronephrosis, pyelonephritis, or nephrolithiasis. The skin of the flank is a very uncommon site of clinical presentation. Here, we report an exceedingly rare case of squamous cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis presenting as skin invasion of th

Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), which is a well-known marker for the normal sweat gland apparatus and its neoplasms in the skin, was recently demonstrated in sebaceous neoplasms. The aim of this study was to examine the expression of CEA and related antigens in the other cutaneous keratinous neoplasms and verruca vulgaris. Normal adult skin, squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), senile keratosis, Bowen's disease, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), seborrhoeic keratosis and verruca vulgaris were stained immunohistochemically with a panel of monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies that recognize different epitop

Metaplastic carcinoma of breast refers to a heterogeneous group of neoplasms characterized by intimate admixture of adenocarcinoma with dominant areas of spindle cell, squamous cell and/ or mesenchymal differentiation. They constitute the rarest histological variant of invasive ductal carcinoma. These carcinomas have aggressive clinical behaviour and show suboptimal response to standard treatment. A 49-year-old female presented with lump in the left breast for one year. She was diagnosed as infiltrating ductal carcinoma breast with triple negative hormone status by trucut biopsy. She completed

Sarcomatoid carcinoma (SC) of the larynx is an uncommon subtype of squamous cell carcinoma which shows both squamous carcinoma and a sarcomatous component, including heterologous elements. The presence of rhabdomyosarcomatous elements in the larynx is extremely rare. Diagnosis of SC can be particularly challenging when the malignant epithelial component is not evident. We present a case of SC in a 72-year-old man with a superficial exophytic mass in the vocal cord initially misdiagnosed as rhabdomyosarcoma due to a predominant spindle cell component with rhabdomyoblastic features by morphology

Approximately 95% of cervical squamous cell carcinomas are associated with high-risk HPV, with a small number of HPV-independent tumors. However, low-risk HPV types have also been detected in rare cervical squamous cell carcinomas. Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion-related changes are a rare morphologic finding in cervical squamous cell carcinoma. We present the case of a 30-yr-old woman who presented with pelvic pain and foul-smelling vaginal discharge showing an exophytic lesion protruding from the cervix. Repeated superficial biopsies showed a low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesi

Squamous cell carcinoma is defined as an invasive epithelial neoplasm, with variable degrees of squamous differentiation, with or without keratinization. It is origins stand at the level of the keratinized stratified squamous epithelium (skin) or non-keratinized (oral mucosa, esophageal mucosa, uterine exocervical mucosa), but it can also be found in squamous metaplasia areas (uterine endocervix or trachea-bronchial tree). This report presents the case of an oral squamous cell carcinoma as a second malignancy in the same anatomical territory, in a patient with prior treatment for chondrosarcom

Cytogenetic changes in epithelial neoplasms are often complex, making it difficult to determine which are the primary abnormalities and which are secondary. In this report, we describe clonal evolution in a cytogenetically simple, but clinically aggressive squamous cell cancer of the skin from a patient with xeroderma pigmentosum. Chromosome preparations were analyzed from a direct harvest, three independent primary harvests, and passaged cell lines. Three closely related tumor subclones were identified in the primary cultures, and all three proliferated in vitro. Monosomy 4 and a chromosome 9

Skin tumors are tumors arising from keratinocyte and from adnexal structures. Immunohistochemistry is very helpful in diagnosis of difficult cases in epithelial skin neoplasms, especially basal cell carcinoma (BCC) which is positive for BerEP4, a keratin marker, and mostly negative for epithelial membrane antigen (EMA). Squamous cell carcinoma cells are positive for EMA and cytokeratin, which are of higher molecular weight than those found in BCC. In contrast to BCC, trichoblastoma and trichoepithelioma are negative for androgen receptors. Of the malignant dermal spindle cell lesions, spindle

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP), a variant form of myeloma, is a rare solid plasma cell tumor that originates from the bone marrow hematopoietic tissue and accounts for about 3% of all plasma cell tumors. EMP can affect various tissues and organs, about 90% of which is found in the head and neck. However, EMP in the reproductive organs is rare, and is difficult to be distinguished from other primary or metastatic genital tumors according to clinical symptoms and imaging findings.
CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we report a case with coexistence of EMP and squamous cell carcinoma in the ce

Thus far, there are no immunohistochemical markers that are specific for thymic epithelial neoplasms, although demonstration of immature T cells in an epithelial tumor can indirectly support a diagnosis of thymoma. In this study, the usefulness of a paraffin section-reactive CD5 antibody (clone CD5/54/B4) for supporting the thymic origin of an epithelial neoplasm was evaluated. Antigen retrieval was effected by microwaving in citrate buffer. Sixteen of 24 thymic carcinomas (67%) were immunoreactive for CD5, including nine of nine squamous cell, two of two undifferentiated, two of four lymphoep

Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC) is a rare and unusual biphasic malignant tumor, which involves sarcomatoid proliferation of pleomorphic spindle cells and squamous cell carcinoma. There are various reports on the clinical and pathological findings of SpCC in the head and neck; however, this type of tumor remains uncommon in the larynx and hypopharynx. The histogenesis of SpCC has been the subject of debate for many decades. Although it is generally accepted that SpCC is a monoclonal epithelial neoplasm, and the spindle cell element is derived from squamous epithelium with divergent mesenchymal di
