The neural correlates of inhibitory control in 10-month-old infants: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Inhibitory control, a core executive function, emerges in infancy and develops rapidly across childhood. Methodological limitations have meant that studies investigating the neural correlates underlying inhibitory control in infancy are rare. Employing functional near-infrared spectroscopy alongside a novel touchscreen task that measures response inhibition, this study aimed to uncover the neural underpinnings of inhibitory control in 10-month-old infants (N = 135). We found that when inhibition was required, the right prefrontal and parietal cortices were more activated than when there was no

An exploratory study of functional brain activation underlying response inhibition in major depressive disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Cognitive control is associated with impulsive and harmful behaviours, such as substance abuse and suicidal behaviours, as well as major depressive disorder (MDD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD). The association between MDD and BPD is partially explained by shared pathological personality traits, which may be underpinned by aspects of cognitive control, such as response inhibition. The neural basis of response inhibition in MDD and BPD is not fully understood and could illuminate factors that differentiate between the disorders and that underlie individual differences in cross-cuttin

Neural Activities Classification of Human Inhibitory Control Using Hierarchical Model.

Human inhibitory control refers to the suppression of behavioral response in real environments, such as when driving a car or riding a motorcycle, playing a game and operating a machine. The P300 wave is a neural marker of human inhibitory control, and it can be used to recognize the symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in human. In addition, the P300 neural marker can be considered as a stop command in the brain-computer interface (BCI) technologies. Therefore, the present study of electroencephalography (EEG) recognizes the mindset of human inhibition by observing the

A bottom-up septal inhibitory circuit mediates anticipatory control of drinking.

Drinking behavior is not only homeostatically regulated but also rapidly adjusted before any changes in blood osmolality occur, known as anticipatory thirst satiation. Homeostatic and anticipatory signals converge in the subfornical organ (SFO); however, the neural pathways conveying peripheral information to the SFO before changes in blood composition are incompletely understood. Here we reveal an inhibitory pathway from the medial septum (MS) to the SFO that is involved in the control of anticipatory drinking behavior in mice. MS γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons encode water-satiation

Causal relationship of CA3 back-projection to the dentate gyrus and its role in CA1 fast ripple generation.

BACKGROUND: Pathophysiological evidence from temporal lobe epilepsy models highlights the hippocampus as the most affected structure due to its high degree of neuroplasticity and control of the dynamics of limbic structures, which are necessary to encode information, conferring to it an intrinsic epileptogenicity. A loss in this control results in observable oscillatory perturbations called fast ripples, in epileptic rats those events are found in CA1, CA3, and the dentate gyrus (DG), which are the principal regions of the trisynaptic circuit of the hippocampus. The present work used Granger c

Posterior Orbitofrontal and Anterior Cingulate Pathways to the Amygdala Target Inhibitory and Excitatory Systems with Opposite Functions.

The bidirectional dialogue of the primate posterior orbitofrontal cortex (pOFC) with the amygdala is essential in cognitive-emotional functions. The pOFC also sends a uniquely one-way excitatory pathway to the amygdalar inhibitory intercalated masses (IM), which inhibit the medial part of the central amygdalar nucleus (CeM). Inhibition of IM has the opposite effect, allowing amygdalar activation of autonomic structures and emotional arousal. Using multiple labeling approaches to identify pathways and their postsynaptic sites in the amygdala in rhesus monkeys, we found that the anterior cingula

Partial reduction in neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) in heterozygous mice induces depression-related behaviour without cognitive impairment.

The neural cell adhesion molecule (NCAM) plays an important role in brain plasticity. Using mice deficient in all isoforms of NCAM we have previously demonstrated that constitutive deficiency in the NCAM gene (NCAM-/-) resulted in cognitive impairment, anhedonic behaviour and a reduced ability to cope with stress. This was accompanied by reduced basal phosphorylation of the fibroblast growth factor receptor 1 (FGFR1) and reduced phosphorylation of calcium-calmodulin kinase (CaMK) II and IV and cAMP response element binding protein (CREB). The present study was aimed to investigate how partial

Intracortical inhibition of the motor cortex in movement disorders.

We have studied the function of inhibitory interneurons within the motor cortex in several movement disorders using a paired-pulse magnetic stimulation technique. Their function was disturbed in patients with dystonia or focal lesions of the basal ganglia. On the other hand, the inhibition was normal in patients with chorea or essential tremor. The inhibitory circuit in the motor cortex must be functionally involved in some movement disorders probably because of changes of the inputs from basal ganglia to motor cortices, but not involved in the others. This difference in the functional involve

Contralateral noise effects on otoacoustic emissions and electrophysiologic responses in normal-hearing adults.

Contralateral noise inhibits the amplitudes of cochlear and neural responses. These measures may hold potential diagnostic utility. The medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex underlies the inhibition of cochlear responses but the extent to which it contributes to inhibition of neural responses remains unclear. Mertes and Leek [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 140, 2027-2038 (2016)] recently examined contralateral inhibition of cochlear responses [transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs)] and neural responses [auditory steady-state responses (ASSRs)] in humans and found that the two measures were not corr

Molecular mechanisms underlying resting-state brain functional correlates of behavioral inhibition.

Previous literature has established the presence of sex differences in behavioral inhibition as well as its neural substrates and related disease risk. However, there is limited evidence that speaks directly to the question of whether or not there are sex-dependent associations between behavioral inhibition and resting-state brain function and, if so, how they are modulated by the underlying molecular mechanisms. We computed functional connectivity density (FCD) using resting-state functional MRI data to examine their associations with behavioral inhibition ability measured using a Go/No-Go ta

Different neural mechanisms within occipitotemporal cortex underlie repetition suppression across same and different-size faces.

Repetition suppression (RS) (or functional magnetic resonance imaging adaptation) refers to the reduction in blood oxygen level-dependent signal following repeated presentation of a stimulus. RS is frequently used to investigate the role of face-selective regions in human visual cortex and is commonly thought to be a "localized" effect, reflecting fatigue of a neuronal population representing a given stimulus. In contrast, predictive coding theories characterize RS as a consequence of "top-down" changes in between-region modulation. Differentiating between these accounts is crucial for the cor

Event-related potentials for response inhibition in Parkinson's disease.

This study investigated inhibitory function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) by recording event-related brain potentials (ERPs) during a Go/NoGo task. Fourteen healthy volunteers and 13 patients with PD without dementia performed a cued continuous performance test that included Go and NoGo trials. The peak latency, amplitude, and topographic distributions of the ERPs to Go and NoGo stimuli were analyzed. Cognitive function was evaluated using the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST), Kana Pick-out Test, and Verbal Fluency Test (VFT). Performances in the WCST and VFT were significantly i

The electrophysiologic profile of Dejerine-Sottas disease (HMSN III).

Electrophysiologic studies in 11 patients with Dejerine-Sottas disease (hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type III, HMSN III) showed median and ulnar motor nerve conduction velocities less than 6 m/sec in all but 1 patient. Marked temporal dispersion without conduction block was present in all patients. Uniform slowing in adjacent motor nerves was consistent with other studies of inherited neuropathies, although marked temporal dispersion may make HMSN III more difficult to distinguish from acquired neuropathies than other hereditary conditions. The electrophysiologic features of HMSN II

Callosal inhibition: the key to the brain code.

A mechanism for interhemispheric communication is proposed based upon the assumption of homotopic callosal inhibition. The implied pattern of cortical activity in each cerebral hemisphere is shown to be the mirror-image and "photographic negative" of the contralateral pattern. Mirror-imagery is a direct consequence of (1) approximate cerebral hemispheric bilateral symmetry and (2) homotopic callosal connections. The photographic negative relationship is a direct consequence of (1) bilaterally symmetrical activation of the cortex via subcortical "attentional" mechanisms and (2) inhibition by a

Short- and long-latency contributions to reciprocal inhibition during various levels of muscle contraction of individuals with cerebral palsy.

Deficits in reciprocal inhibition likely contribute to excessive antagonist muscle cocontraction during voluntary movements of individuals with cerebral palsy. This study examined neural contributions to reciprocal inhibition of the soleus motoneurons of individuals with spastic, diplegic cerebral palsy and nondisabled individuals during various levels of voluntary tibialis anterior contraction. A condition-test H-reflex paradigm examined short- and long-latency contributions to reciprocal inhibition of soleus neural pools during changing levels of voluntary tibialis anterior contraction. Paradoxical inhibition of autonomic output following cortical suppression: When inhibiting an inhibitor results in more (not less) inhibition.

Paradoxical effects in brain stimulation, where inhibition of a putative inhibitory region leads to stronger (not weaker) downstream suppression, challenge overly simplistic classical assumptions about excitation-inhibition interactions. Joshi et al. (2024) demonstrated that optimised inhibitory multi-channel transcranial direct current stimulation (MtDCS) over the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (rVLPFC) enhanced suppression of autonomic skin conductance responses (SCRs). However, this only occurred in individuals with signs of elevated cortical hyperexcitability and only in the cathoda

Neurophysiological assessment of juvenile parkinsonism due to primary monoamine neurotransmitter disorders.

No studies have investigated voluntary movement abnormalities and their neurophysiological correlates in patients with parkinsonism due to inherited primary monoamine neurotransmitter (NT) disorders. Nine NT disorders patients and 16 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. Objective measurements of repetitive finger tapping were obtained using a motion analysis system. Primary motor cortex (M1) excitability was assessed by recording the input/output (I/O) curve of motor-evoked potentials (MEP) and using a conditioning test paradigm for short-interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) assessment. Face-hand sensorimotor interactions revealed by afferent inhibition.

Reorganization of the sensorimotor cortex following permanent (e.g., amputation) or temporary (e.g., local anaesthesia) deafferentation of the hand has revealed large-scale plastic changes between the hand and face representations that are accompanied by perceptual correlates. The physiological mechanisms underlying this reorganization remain poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate sensorimotor interactions between the face and hand using an afferent inhibition transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol in which the motor evoked potential elicited by the magnetic pulse is i
