Exploring the response of bacterial community functions to microplastic features in lake ecosystems through interpretable machine learning.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous and have various characteristics. However, their impacts on bacterial community functions in lakes remain elusive. In this study, we identified 33 different MPs features including their abundance, shape, color, size, and polymer type, from Taihu Lake, China. These features were used to construct 48 machine learning models, utilizing four types of machine learning regression algorithms, to investigate how different MP features influence human health, carbon/nitrogen cycling, and energy source-related functions of bacterial communities. The XGBoost models provi

Succession of the wheat seed-associated microbiome as affected by soil fertility level and introduction of Penicillium and Bacillus inoculants in the field.

During germination, the seed releases nutrient-rich exudates into the spermosphere, thereby fostering competition between resident microorganisms. However, insight into the composition and temporal dynamics of seed-associated bacterial communities under field conditions is currently lacking. This field study determined the temporal changes from 11 to 31 days after sowing in the composition of seed-associated bacterial communities of winter wheat as affected by long-term soil fertilization history, and by introduction of the plant growth-promoting microbial inoculants Penicillium bilaiae and Ba

Community Biological Ammonium Demand: A Conceptual Model for Cyanobacteria Blooms in Eutrophic Lakes.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are enhanced by anthropogenic pressures, including excessive nutrient (nitrogen, N, and phosphorus, P) inputs and a warming climate. Severe eutrophication in aquatic systems is often manifested as non-N2-fixing CyanoHABs (e.g., Microcystis spp.), but the biogeochemical relationship between N inputs/dynamics and CyanoHABs needs definition. Community biological ammonium (NH4+) demand (CBAD) relates N dynamics to total microbial productivity and NH4+ deprivation in aquatic systems. A mechanistic conceptual model was constructed by combining nutrient

Clinical, biochemical, and molecular spectrum of hyperargininemia due to arginase I deficiency.

The urea cycle consists of six consecutive enzymatic reactions that convert waste nitrogen into urea. Urea cycle disorders are a group of inborn errors of hepatic metabolism that often result in life threatening hyperammonemia and hyperglutaminemia. Deficiencies of all of the enzymes of the cycle have been described and although each specific disorder results in the accumulation of different precursors, hyperammonemia and hyperglutaminemia are common biochemical hallmarks of these disorders. Arginase is the enzyme involved in the last step of the urea cycle. It catalyzes the conversion of argi

Effects of nitrogen on growth and physiological traits of feed mulberry under salt stress.

Soil salinization has emerged as a major concern, significantly limiting agricultural development in China. Nitrogen plays a crucial role in maintaining the cycling of key substances and energy metabolism within plants. When applied under salt stress, nitrogen can mitigate some of the detrimental effects of salinity on plants, thus improving growth performance and physiological resilience under saline conditions. In this study, one-year-old 'Gui 109' feed mulberry seedlings were used as experimental material in a hydroponic setup to investigate the impact of varying nitrogen levels on the grow

CO2-driven ion exchange for ammonium recovery from source-separated urine.

Nitrogen recovery from urine and CO2 utilization are both vital for achieving a circular economy and mitigating climate change. Divided engineering solutions have been proposed to address either problem, but there is still a lack of integrated technologies to simultaneously tackle the two tasks. We demonstrated CO2-driven ion exchange for nitrogen recovery (CIXNR) from urine and evaluated the process in Malawi. By comprehensively studying the ion exchange chemistry using a proton-form weak acid cation exchanger (WAC-H), we revealed the suppressed adsorption capacity caused by counterion releas

Dual Source Electron Transfer Enabled by N-Doped Carbon for Efficient Fe(III) Reduction.

The Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle plays a pivotal role in the Fenton-like process. Conventional strategies relying on external reductants suffer from drawbacks, such as radical self-quenching and secondary pollution. This study innovatively utilized electron-rich pollutants and H2O2 as dual electron donors to accelerate Fe(III) reduction. Nitrogen-doped Ketjen Black (KB-N) was synthesized through pyrolysis modification using guanine, a nitrogen-rich compound with a conjugated structure, as the precursor. KB-N mediated electron transfer from electron-rich pollutants to Fe(III) via its π-π conjugated net

Automated Method for the Sensitive Analysis of Volatile Amines in Seawater.

Methylamines are polar, volatile, and organic nitrogen-containing compounds. They are challenging to analyze, limiting our understanding of their occurrence and role within the marine nitrogen cycle. We describe an automated headspace solid-phase microextraction method, coupled with gas chromatography and nitrogen phosphorus detection (HS-SPME-GC-NPD), for analyzing methylamines in seawater. Three SPME conditions were investigated: temperature, equilibration, and extraction. The method was 6-24 times more sensitive to trimethylamine (TMA) than to dimethylamine (DMA) and monomethylamine (MMA). …

Coupling Iron Sludge Addition and Intermittent Aeration for Achieving Simultaneous Methanogenesis, Feammox, and Denitrification in a Single Reactor Treating Fish Sludge.

An integrated anaerobic digestion system for the simultaneous removal of carbon and nitrogen from fish sludge was developed by coupling iron sludge supplementation with intermittent aeration. In terms of nitrogen removal, Fe(III) in iron sludge could trigger Feammox reactions and intermittent aeration could drive the Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle to sustain continuous ammonia removal. Mass balance analysis suggested that nitrate was the main product of Feammox, which was subsequently removed through heterotrophic denitrification. In terms of carbon removal, the Fe(III)-induced dissimilatory iron reduct

The phosphorus harvest from low-temperature mainstream wastewater through iron phosphate crystallization in a pilot-scale partial nitritation/anammox reactor.

The phosphorus harvest along nitrogen removal in the partial nitritation/anammox (PNA) reactor is promising for saving space and simplifying the management of mainstream wastewater treatment facilities. In this study, the phosphorus recovery from the low-temperature mainstream wastewater was explored through iron phosphate crystallization in a pilot-scale PNA reactor. With the COD-alleviated municipal wastewater as the influent, the ammonium concentration of about 50 mg/L and the phosphorus concentration ranged from 5.4 to 7.1 mg/L, under the temperature of 15 °C and the addition of external f

Hydrogen Sulfide Promotes Nodulation and Nitrogen Fixation in Soybean-Rhizobia Symbiotic System.

The rhizobium-legume symbiotic system is crucial for nitrogen cycle balance in agriculture. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a gaseous signaling molecule, may regulate various physiological processes in plants. However, whether H2S has regulatory effect in this symbiotic system remains unknown. Herein, we investigated the possible role of H2S in the symbiosis between soybean (Glycine max) and rhizobium (Sinorhizobium fredii). Our results demonstrated that an exogenous H2S donor (sodium hydrosulfide [NaHS]) treatment promoted soybean growth, nodulation, and nitrogenase (Nase) activity. Western blotting …

New insights in nutritional management and amino acid supplementation in urea cycle disorders.

Sodium phenylbutyrate is used in the pharmacological treatment of urea cycle disorders to create alternative pathways for nitrogen excretion. The primary metabolite, phenylacetate, conjugates glutamine in the liver and kidney to form phenylacetylglutamine that is readily excreted in the urine. Patients with urea cycle disorders taking sodium phenylbutyrate have a selective reduction in the plasma concentrations of branched chain amino acids despite adequate dietary protein intake. Moreover, this depletion is usually the harbinger of a metabolic crisis. Plasma branched chain amino acids and oth

Aluminum sulfate (alum) application interactions with coupled metal and nutrient cycling in a hypereutrophic lake ecosystem.

Many lake ecosystems worldwide experience severe eutrophication and associated harmful blooms of cyanobacteria due to high loadings of phosphorus (P). While aluminum sulfate (alum) has been used for decades as chemical treatment of eutrophic waters, the ecological effects of alum on coupled metal and nutrient cycling are not well known. The objective of our study was to investigate the effects of an in-situ alum treatment on aluminum and nutrient (P, N, and S) cycling in a hypereutrophic lake ecosystem. Our results indicate that the addition of alum along with sodium aluminate (as a buffer) in

Comparative physiological and genomic characterization of a novel Nitrobacter vulgaris strain from a nitrate-contaminated subsurface.

Nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) represent a crucial node in the global nitrogen cycle. By catalyzing the second step of nitrification-the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate to generate energy for growth-NOB activity controls the fate of nitrite (NO2-) in aerobic environments. Despite thriving in diverse environments, including soils, freshwater, marine ecosystems, subsurface habitats, and water treatment systems, organisms capable of nitrite oxidation are confined to Nitrobacter, Nitrospira, Nitrospina, Nitrotoga, and a few other specific lineages. The genus Nitrobacter, recognized for its facul…

The Role of Urea Cycle Functional Studies in Preclinical Research.

Inborn errors of metabolism affecting the urea cycle are rare severe conditions caused by impaired nitrogen detoxification, leading to hyperammonemia and neurological morbidity across a broad clinical spectrum. Current biochemical diagnostics largely rely on quantification of metabolites. While indispensable for diagnosis and acute management, these snapshot readouts are highly dependent on external factors and often fail to reflect urea cycle function in metabolically compensated states, limiting their usefulness for disease stratification, therapeutic monitoring, and preclinical evaluation o

Simultaneous removal of nitrate, manganese, zinc, and bisphenol a by manganese redox cycling system: Performance and mechanism.

The manganese(Mn) redox cycling system in this work was created by combining Mn(IV)-reducing bacteria MFG10 with Mn(II)-oxidizing bacteria HY129. The biomanganese oxides (BMO) generated by strain HY129 were transformed by strain MFG10 to Mn(II), finishing the Mn redox cycling, in which nitrate (NO3--N) was converted to nitrite, which was further reduced to nitrogen gas. The system could achieve 85.7 % and 98.8 % elimination efficiencies of Mn(ⅠⅠ) and NO3--N, respectively, at Mn(ⅠⅠ) = 20.0 mg/L, C/N = 2.0, pH = 6.5, and NO3--N = 16.0 mg/L. The removal of bisphenol A (BPA) and zinc (Zn(II)) at 3

Soil metabolomics: Deciphering underground metabolic webs in terrestrial ecosystems.

Soil metabolomics is an emerging approach for profiling diverse small molecule metabolites, i.e., metabolomes, in the soil. Soil metabolites, including fatty acids, amino acids, lipids, organic acids, sugars, and volatile organic compounds, often contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur and are directly linked to soil biogeochemical cycles driven by soil microorganisms. This paper presents an overview of methods for analyzing soil metabolites and the state-of-the-art of soil metabolomics in relation to soil nutrient cycling. We describe important applications of met

Air quality across a European hotspot: Spatial gradients, seasonality, diurnal cycles and trends in the Veneto region, NE Italy.

The Veneto region (NE Italy) lies in the eastern part of the Po Valley, a European hotspot for air pollution. Data for key air pollutants (CO, NO, NO2, O3, SO2, PM10 and PM2.5) measured over 7years (2008/2014) across 43 sites in Veneto were processed to characterise their spatial and temporal patterns and assess the air quality. Nitrogen oxides, PM and ozone are critical pollutants frequently breaching the EC limit and target values. Intersite analysis demonstrates a widespread pollution across the region and shows that primary pollutants (nitrogen oxides, CO, PM) are significantly higher in c

Revealing the characteristics and nitrogen metabolism mechanism of Anammox biofilm assisted by nanoscale zero-valent iron.

Biofilm was an advanced approach to facilitating anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) application owing to high biomass retention and stable performance. The characteristics, nitrogen removal kinetics and microbial metabolic mechanism of Anammox biofilm with intermittent dosing of nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) were comprehensively revealed. Anammox biofilm was acclimated efficiently with nZVI assistance within 110 days. nZVI stimulated the secretion of EPS, especially T-EPS and PN, which showed key importances in biofilm formation. The nitrogen removal kinetics were accurately described
