[Nutrition support: essential component of preoperative preparation for surgery of the esophagus].

The authors present their experience with surgical treatment (one-stage replacement of the esophagus) of 113 patients with cicatricial constriction of the esophagus after chemical burn and esophageal achalasia for the recent 10 years. At the present-day stage priority is given to bougienage of the esophagus followed by setting a nasogastric probe for nutrition. Since 2006 the traditional preoperative preparation has included nutrition support with the standard enteral mixture through the nasogastric probe in the volume of physiological requirement for 7-10 days. The proposed method allows impr

Role of trace elements in parenteral nutrition support of the surgical neonate.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition (PN) has transformed the outcome for neonates with surgical problems in the intensive care unit. Trace element supplementation in PN is a standard practice in many neonatal intensive care units. However, many of these elements are contaminants in PN solutions, and contamination levels may, in themselves, be sufficient for normal metabolic needs. Additional supplementation may actually lead to toxicity in neonates whose requirements are small. METHODS: An electronic search of the MEDLINE, Cochrane Collaboration, and SCOPUS English language medical databases was

Creation of nutrition support centers of excellence: is it truly an excellent idea?

In response to external pressures and events that threatened to adversely affect the field of bariatric surgery, the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery created a mechanism for certifying surgeons and their facilities to guarantee that bariatric surgery would be performed with the greatest degree of patient safety. Those surgeons and facilities that satisfied the requirements were designated as Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence (BSCOE). That process involved creating an independent, not-for-profit corporation, establishing the best practice criteria for certification, an

[Is there an indication for parenteral nutrition support in the terminally ill cancer patient?].

Cancer cachexia is mediated by cytokines affecting intermediate metabolism of energy, proteins, carbohydrate and lipid. It is aggravated by common therapeutic measures: surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy that reduce oral intake as well as increase catabolism. Enteral or parenteral nutrition support decreases the catabolic rate of the patient, helping the patient withstand the side effects of the therapeutic measures, but do not reverse to anabolism. Terminally ill cancer patients who are refractory to the different therapeutic measures need palliative care. Nutrition is a basic human right

Clinical study on nutrition support in patients with severe acute pancreatitis.

AIM: To investigate the effect of nutritional support therapy on severe acute pancreatitis (SAP). METHODS: A total of 96 patients with severe acute pancreatitis were divided randomly into control and treatment groups. The former group received total parenteral nutrition (TPN) via central venous infusion, while parenteral nutrition (PN) and enteral nutrition (EN) therapies were applied in different phases for the latter group. The nutrition status, acute phase responses, pancreas lesions, enteric mucosa penetrability and immune functions were monitored. RESULTS: Body weight and prealbumin con…

The route of nutrition support affects the early phase of wound healing.

BACKGROUND: Nutrition support via the enteral route has been shown to be superior to parenteral administration in maintaining immune function, decreasing septic complications, and increasing survival after severe trauma and surgical injury. Whether the route of nutrition support affects wound healing, another important determinant of outcome following injury, is not known. METHODS: Forty-nine Sprague-Dawley rats, 290 to 360 g body wt, underwent identical surgical manipulation consisting of central venous catheterization, fashioning of gastrostomy and dorsal skin incision, and placement of pol

The Impact of Enteral Nutritional Support on Surgical Complications and Clinical Efficacy in Children With Neuroblastoma With Moderate or High Nutritional Risk.

AIM: This study aims to investigate the association between enteral nutritional support, surgical complication rates, and the nutritional improvement effect in pediatric neuroblastoma (NB) patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study enrolled 94 neuroblastoma patients (≤14 years old) with moderate or high nutritional risk who underwent treatment at Hunan Children's Hospital between August 2019 and October 2021. Patients were assigned to a control group (n = 45), who received routine dietary guidance, and an experimental group (n = 49), who received enteral nutritional support along with…

Eating Perception, Nutrition Knowledge and Body Image among Para-Athletes: Practical Challenges in Nutritional Support.

Limited information exists on dietary practices in para-athletes. The aim of this study was to clarify the actual situation of para-athletes' dietary practice and to sort out the factors (i.e., eating perception, nutrition knowledge, and body image), that may hinder their dietary practices, and explored the practical challenges in nutritional support and improving nutrition knowledge for para-athletes. Thirty-two Japanese para-athletes (22 men) and 45 collegiate student athletes without disabilities (27 men) participated in the online survey. The questionnaire included demographic characterist…

Caloric requirement targets for nutritional support in adult autoimmune encephalitis: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a severe neurological disease often accompanied by consciousness disturbances, severe swallowing difficulties, and gastrointestinal dysfunction, increasing the risk of malnutrition. However, the optimal caloric intake target during the acute phase of AE remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the impact of caloric intake on short-term clinical outcomes in AE patients, specifically focusing on the improvement in Clinical Assessment Scale for Autoimmune Encephalitis (CASE) scores, to provide recommendations for nutritional support duri…
