PURPOSE: Octreotide is of proven efficacy in the management of patients with acromegaly, thyrotropin-secreting pituitary adenomas, and certain gastrointestinal tumors, but its effect in Cushing's syndrome is less clear.

Variceal bleeding is a major complication and the leading cause of death in patients with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. BACKGROUND: Bronchopulmonary carcinoids are neuroendocrine tumors. They can present with Cushing's syndrome secondary to ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) secretion. Curative resection is possible only after adequate localization of the ectopic source.
