Second day maxillary molars of hamsters were cultured during 4, 8 and 10 days in the presence or absence of 250 micrograms/ml vitamin C. After 8 days of culture without vit. C the basal lamina in the cervical loop region (proliferation zone) was locally disrupted; after 10 days it was completely absent or only remnants of it could be found. In the differentiation zone an abnormal amorphous predentine matrix was found during vit. C deficiency; from the 4th day on the basal lamina had changed in structure or ruptured prematurely. A role of the basal lamina in directing odontoblast differentiatio

Although first permanent molar hypoconulid absence, third molar agenesis, and small tooth size are all part of evolutionary trend of dental retardation, each bears a different relationship to dental caries. Caries prevalence in the maxillary and mandibular permanent first molars of the Burlington Research Centre serial experimental group at age 16 years was less in the children whose first molars were missing the hypoconulid. Conversely, caries prevalence in mandibular first molars was greater in the children who had agenesis of third molars. The extraction of first molars due to caries was mo

The dental morphology and tooth replacement pattern of Liaoceratops yanzigouensis, the earliest known neoceratopsian, are important for our understanding of the evolution of the ceratopsian dental system. Here we describe the dental morphology and tooth replacement of Liaoceratops yanzigouensis based on high-resolution computed tomographic (CT) scan data of three specimens including the holotype, the first study for basal ceratopsian. The three-dimensional reconstructions reveal some important new information, including: three teeth in the premaxilla in one side, two more teeth in the dentary

OBJECTIVES: Enamel fluorosis is a hypomineralization caused by chronic exposure to high levels of fluoride during tooth development. Previous research on the relationship between enamel fluoride content and fluorosis severity has been equivocal. The current study aimed at comparing visually and histologically assessed fluorosis severity with enamel fluoride content.
METHODS: Extracted teeth (n=112) were visually examined using the Thylstrup and Fejerskov Index for fluorosis. Eruption status of each tooth was noted. Teeth were cut into 100 μm slices to assess histological changes with polarize

The number of published cases of adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) has steadily increased, and about half were reported in Asian populations. Although the clinicopathologic profile of AOT has been extensively reported, factual knowledge of its pathogenesis is rudimentary at best, and there is controversy as to precisely which odontogenic epithelium it arises from. AOT is a successional tooth-associated lesion which develops during the mixed dentition. The permanent successor differs from its deciduous predecessor in that it has an eruptive pathway from the dental follicle to the gingiva, the

In order to test whether the formation of a replacement tooth bud in a continuously replacing dentition is linked to the functional state of the tooth predecessor, I examined the timing of development of replacement teeth with respect to their functional predecessors in the pharyngeal dentition of the zebrafish. Observations based on serial semithin sections of ten specimens, ranging in age from four week old juveniles to adults, indicate that (i) a replacement tooth germ develops at the distal end of an epithelial structure, called the successional dental lamina, budding off from the crypt ep

The insulin-like growth factors (IGF) are a family of growth factors, receptors and binding proteins that are involved in numerous growth and differentiation processes, as well as in various pathological conditions. The aim of this review is to summarize data that has been accumulating in recent years linking the IGF system to a number of physiological and pathological oral processes. The IGF system fulfills an important role in growth and development of teeth, mandible, maxillae, and tongue. It has been postulated that IGF-I may be of great value in the treatment of periodontal defects and in

This article reviews the aetiology and management of the ectopic maxillary canine. Much controversy surrounds the causes of canine palatal ectopia. The recent evidence surrounding the genetic and guidance theories are examined. The management options are detailed and the indications for each treatment modality based on the available scientific evidence are presented. Finally, the untoward sequelae of canine ectopia are discussed.

The long-term effects of severe hypothyroidism on craniofacial growth and dental development are illustrated in this case. It is apparent that given a favorable diet, the primary dentition can persist for a long period (early childhood to at least the age of 19) without the development of dental caries. It is also clear that the dental structures can still respond to the effects of L-thyroxine at a relatively late age, with the exfoliation of primary dentition and eruption of the secondary dentition. Impacted mandibular second molars appear to be rare. The lack of proper growth of the mandible
