Maternal mental health disorders and offspring asthma and allergic diseases: The role of child mental health.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological stress during pregnancy and postnatally has been shown to be associated with offspring atopic diseases (asthma, atopic dermatitis and allergic rhinitis). The aim of this study was to assess whether this association may be attributable to the child's own mental health disorders. METHOD: The study population included 15,092 twin children born 2002-2010 in Sweden. Questionnaire data at age 9 years was linked to national patient- and prescription registers. Maternal mental health during pregnancy and 3 years postnatally were identified from diagnosis and medicat

Harsh parenting and child conduct and emotional problems: parent- and child-effects in the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort.

In high-income countries, links between harsh and abusive parenting and child conduct and emotional problems are well-documented. However, less is known about these relationships in low- and middle-income countries, where harsh parenting may be more widely accepted and higher rates of conduct or emotional problems may exist which could influence the strength of these associations. We sought to investigate these relationships in a large population-based, prospective longitudinal study from Brazil, which also allowed us to test for sex differences. Using data from the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort S

Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Among Child Care Center Directors in 2008 and 2016.

BACKGROUND: Children in child care centers represent an important population to consider in attempts to mitigate the spread of an influenza pandemic. This national survey, conducted in 2008 and 2016, assessed directors' reports of their child care centers' pandemic influenza preparation before and after the 2009 H1N1 novel influenza pandemic. METHODS: This was a telephone-based survey of child care center directors randomly selected from a national database of licensed US child care centers who were queried about their preparedness for pandemic influenza. We grouped conceptually related items

Effects of social class differences and social mobility on growth in height, weight and body mass index in a British cohort.

By longitudinally linking follow-up restudies of the National Child Development Study it has been possible to examine not only the well-known association of social class with the size of the child, but also with longitudinal growth, and, in addition the effect of social mobility on growth. The relation of type of occupation of the male head of household to height and weight of the child is seen at all ages (7, 11 and 16) but class influence on growth from 7 years onward is minimal. Social mobility is a significant factor especially in relation to stature but is not significantly related to gro

The prospective association of prenatal anxiety symptoms in mothers and fathers with general child development 14 months postpartum and the mediating role of parent-child bonding: a mediation analysis within the longitudinal cohort study DREAM.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety symptoms during pregnancy are a frequent mental health issue for expectant mothers and fathers. Research revealed that prenatal anxiety symptoms can impact parent-child bonding and child development. This study aims to investigate the prospective relationship between prenatal anxiety symptoms and general child development and whether it is mediated by parent-child bonding. Considering the paucity of perinatal research on fathers, their inclusion is of particular interest. METHODS: Data were derived from the prospective cohort study DREAM including 1,544 mothers and 985 fat

Multifocal ganglioneuroblastoma coexistent with total colonic aganglionosis.

Neuroblastoma and Hirschsprung's disease are considered aberrations of neural crest cell growth, migration, or differentiation. Their coexistence, however, is rare. We present the case of an only child with total colon Hirschsprung's disease diagnosed shortly after birth, who was found to have noncontiguous ganglioneuroblastomas without metastases at age 16 months. The spectrum of neural crest anomalies, long segment Hirschsprung's disease and multifocal neuroblastoma, in this child is unique and previously unreported.

Using implants for the growing child.

The use of implants for the growing child is not routinely recommended. The concerns about placing implants for patients in this age group are related to jaw growth. However, not all children with missing teeth need to wait for growth to be completed prior to implant placement. In this paper, the authors will discuss the indications for implant placement in the growing child. The decision for implant placement is based not only on growth, but also the number and location of the missing teeth.

An unusual cause of hip pain in a child.

In this perplexing case, a child with signs of apparent hip pain was treated for a sewing needle embedded in the sole of the foot. The diagnosis of foreign body easily could have been missed, because the external signs were minimal and the clinical findings indicated hip disease. However, the child's extreme distress seemed inconsistent with the initial normal findings. Only reexamination and looking beyond the obvious led to the diagnosis.

Reporting and identifying child physical abuse: How well are we doing?

Entry into the child protection system in the US begins with a child maltreatment report. Some evidence suggests that report source and child age are related to report outcomes, but there has been no national study of these relationships. The purpose of this secondary data analysis was to describe the distribution of report sources for child physical abuse (CPA), and examine whether (a) the source of a report and (b) child age contribute to the likelihood of substantiation of the reported abuse. Multilevel logistic regressions were conducted using a US national sample of 204,414 children inves

Maternal thyroid dysfunction and depressive symptoms during pregnancy and child behavioral and emotional problems - an ECHO multi-cohort investigation.

BACKGROUND: Maternal thyroid dysfunction and maternal depression during pregnancy may increase the risk of child behavioral and emotional problems. We sought to investigate the independent and interactive associations of these two risk factors with child behavior problems. METHODS: We combined data from four cohorts in the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program (N = 949). Maternal thyroid function (thyroid-stimulating hormone [TSH], free thyroxine [fT4], thyroid peroxidase autoantibodies [TPO-Ab], fT4/TSH ratio) was measured predominantly during the first half of pre

From mother to child: Maternal betrayal trauma and risk for maltreatment and psychopathology in the next generation.

The objective of this study was to investigate whether experiences of high betrayal trauma (BT; maltreatment by a parent/caregiver) during mothers' own childhoods may influence the intergenerational transmission of maltreatment and its associated psychopathology from mothers to their children. A prospective, longitudinal design was utilized to assess maternal physical and sexual betrayal trauma in relation to children's own maltreatment experiences, and child mood and behavioral symptoms during pre-adolescence. Data from 706 mothers and children who participated in the Longitudinal Studies of

Associations between maternal and paternal depressive symptoms and early child behavior problems: Testing a mutually adjusted prospective longitudinal model.

BACKGROUND: While there is substantial empirical work on maternal depression, less is known about how mothers' and fathers' depressive symptoms compare in their association with child behavior problems in early childhood. In particular, few studies have examined unique relationships in the postpartum period by controlling for the other parent, or looked at longitudinal change in either parent's depressive symptoms across the first living years as a predictor of child problems. METHODS: We examined depressive symptoms in parents at 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months following childbirth, and child be

Sensorineural outcome at 2 years for survivors of erythroblastosis treated with fetal intravascular transfusions.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the sensorineural outcome at 2 years of age in a complete cohort of survivors of fetal intravascular transfusions. METHODS: From March 1984 to May 1990, 38 of 52 consecutive fetuses (73%) suffering from severe erythroblastosis survived attempted intravascular transfusions at the Royal Women's Hospital, Melbourne. At 2 years of age, corrected for prematurity where appropriate, the survivors had a psychological assessment, including the mental developmental index of the Bayley scales, and a standardized neurodevelopmental examination. RESULTS: Only one transfused child

Differential Contributions of Parental Warmth and Mindfulness to Child Executive Function and Pediatric Type 1 Diabetes Management.

OBJECTIVE: Positive parenting (e.g., parental warmth, mindful parenting) has been posited to promote effective pediatric type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) management. This promotive effect may partly be conferred by fostering child self-regulatory development, such as executive function (EF). However, no research has examined whether better child EF serves as a mechanism underlying associations between positive parenting and child blood glucose levels (HbA1c). Moreover, it is unclear whether mindful parenting offers a unique benefit beyond that of parental warmth-a key pillar of effective parent

Primary bronchopulmonary leiomyosarcoma of the left main bronchus in a child presenting with wheezing and atelectasis of the left lung.

Primary lung tumors are rare in children, and primary bronchopulmonary leiomyosarcomas are very rare in children, with only 10 cases reported in the English-language literature. We report on the eleventh case of primary bronchopulmonary leiomyosarcoma in a child, and it is the first case in Taiwan, and also in Asia. In addition, this is the second case of this tumor arising in the left main bronchus. Before the present case, there were only 2 cases of this tumor in the main bronchus: one was in the right main-stem bronchus, and the other in the left-stem main bronchus. Ours is the second case

Ischemic infarction of cerebral cortex in a child with scorpion sting envenomation.

Ischemic infarction in scorpion sting envenomation is rare and only few cases have been reported in adults. A 3-y-old child is reported who developed recurrent generalized tonic-clonic seizures 2 h after admission and hemiparesis on third day of admission following scorpion sting. Cranial tomography showed infarction in right and left frontoparietal lobes. The child was managed conservatively with prazosin, lorazepam and phenytoin sodium and made a complete recovery.

A natural language processing and deep learning approach to identify child abuse from pediatric electronic medical records.

Child physical abuse is a leading cause of traumatic injury and death in children. In 2017, child abuse was responsible for 1688 fatalities in the United States, of 3.5 million children referred to Child Protection Services and 674,000 substantiated victims. While large referral hospitals maintain teams trained in Child Abuse Pediatrics, smaller community hospitals often do not have such dedicated resources to evaluate patients for potential abuse. Moreover, identification of abuse has a low margin of error, as false positive identifications lead to unwarranted separations, while false negativ

Isolated tuberculosis of the spleen presenting with fever of unknown origin in a vaccinated child.

Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the top 10 causes of death worldwide and is more common in developing countries. Isolated splenic TB is typically found in trauma, miliary TB and immunocompromised status. We present a very rare case of an immunocompetent child with an isolated primary TB in the spleen. The child only had fever of unknown origin (FUO), and mild anaemia. The diagnosis was not made until splenectomy was performed. The patient took the quadruple therapy for TB, and follow-ups showed no recurrence. This case is unique because this child was immunocompetent with no history of trauma or a

Attempted Drug-facilitated Sexual Assault-Xylazine Intoxication in a Child.

There are only a few cases of drug-facilitated sexual assaults on children reported in the literature so far. Here, a case of a four-year-old boy is presented. He was unconscious, and the accompanying adults reported that the child had been at a playground on his own. Returning home, he complained of having been stung and collapsed immediately. Urine and serum samples of the child were investigated. In the toxicological analysis, xylazine, a sedative and muscle relaxant used in animals, was detected. Subsequent quantification by GC/MS after solid-phase extraction revealed 0.053 mg/L xylazine i

A survey of child psychiatry outpatients. 1. Clinical and demographic characteristics.

This paper describes clinical and demographic characteristics of 664 children who attended outpatient child psychiatry clinics in Perth, Western Australia, over a one-year period. All social classes were represented; parents were the most common source of referral and typically the child had been assessed or treated for emotional or behavioural problems by other agencies previously. Referrals from the juvenile justice system were uncommon. The accessibility of clinics to the child population was found to have a significant effect on the rate of referral. Only 10% of the sample received conduct
