Workers' compensation status is associated with increased complications following distal radius fracture open reduction and internal fixation.

BackgroundWhile workers' compensation (WC) patients often experience worse orthopedic outcomes, complication patterns following distal radius fracture (DRF) open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) remain poorly defined. Prior DRF-specific studies include only small, regional cohorts. This study leverages Epic Cosmos to conduct the first nationwide analysis comparing complications between WC and non-WC populations.MethodsThis retrospective study queried the Epic Cosmos database for DRF ORIF procedures (2017-2024). WC patients (N = 4,101) were matched 1:5 with non-WC patients (N = 20,505) ba

Comparison of clinical outcomes in acute ankle fracture open reduction internal fixation with and without ankle arthroscopy.

This study aims to compare intra-articular findings and clinical outcomes between patients undergoing traditional open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and those undergoing arthroscopically assisted ORIF (AAORIF) for ankle fractures. By evaluating postoperative pain, functional recovery, and complications we seek to determine the role of Arthroscopy in optimizing outcomes. A retrospective study was conducted reviewing 83 patients who underwent ankle fracture ORIF: 34 with arthroscopy and 49 without. We documented intra-articular pathologies and evaluated variables such as tourniquet time

Feasibility of the preauricular transparotid approach in open reduction and internal fixation of intracapsular mandibular condyle fracture.

Mandibular condyle fractures pose surgical challenges owing to their proximity to the facial nerve and the complex temporomandibular joint anatomy. Traditional approaches limit exposure and hinder effective fracture management. The preauricular transparotid approach is a potential alternative. We aimed to assess the feasibility of this approach and the postoperative complications. A retrospective analysis of 45 patients who underwent open reduction/internal fixation (OR/IF) for intracapsular condylar fractures using a preauricular transparotid approach was conducted. Patient demographics, surg

Open Exploration and Reduction of Paediatric Supracondylar Humerus Fracture with Pink, Pulseless Hand in Resource-Limited Settings.

Background: Supracondylar humerus fractures (SHFs) are common paediatric injuries, with high risk of vascular compromise. Some patients present with a 'pink, pulseless hand', caused by occlusion of brachial artery flow but with collateral circulation preserving distal perfusion. Management of these patients remains controversial, especially when resources may be limited for prolonged hospitalisation and serial monitoring by skilled staff. The aim of this study is to present the intraoperative findings, surgical procedures done and outcomes at 6 weeks for patients with paediatric supracondylar

Open Reduction and Orthogonal Tension Band Plating of an Isolated Periprosthetic Tibial Tubercle Fracture: A Case Report.

CASE: A 67-year-old woman sustained a periprosthetic tibial tubercle avulsion fracture with extensor mechanism disruption. She underwent open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) with orthogonal mini-fragment plates applied in a tension band fashion with patellar tendon suture augmentation. Radiographs, range of motion, and patient-reported outcomes were completed over 1 year. CONCLUSION: Isolated periprosthetic tibial tubercle fractures with disruption of the extensor mechanism can be treated with ORIF using orthogonal tension band plating. At 1-year follow-up, the surgical technique described

Mini-invasive approach vs. traditional open reduction for periprosthetic hip fracture osteosynthesis with the NCB® plate.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative hip periprosthetic fracture (PPF) is a frequent complication whose treatment does not achieve optimal results among eldery fragile patients. Locking compression plate (LCP) osteosynthesis is the gold standard treatment for Vancouver B1 and VC fractures and there is a growing consensus in doing the same with B2 fractures in patients with high comorbidity. Following that trend of being as non-aggressive as possible we investigated whether a mini-open (MO) approach would lead to better outcomes in LCP plate osteosynthesis of hip PFFs when compared to the traditional open

Trochanteric fracture pattern is associated with increased risk for nonunion independent of open or closed reduction technique.

PURPOSE: Soft tissue injury and soft tissue injury as risk factors for nonunion following trochanteric femur fractures (TFF) are marginally investigated. The aim of this study was to identify risk factors for impaired fracture healing in geriatric trauma patients with TFF following surgical treatment with a femoral nail. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included geriatric trauma patients (aged > 70 years) with TFF who were treated with femoral nailing. Fractures were classified according to AO/OTA. Nonunion was defined as lack of callus-formation after 6 months, material breakage, and

Open reduction and internal fixation for dorsal fracture dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint using a miniplate.

Various operative techniques have been described for unstable dorsal fracture dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint with articular involvement. However, this injury still remains a therapeutic challenge for hand surgeons because no single technique guarantees successful outcomes. We performed a novel procedure using a low-profile miniplate, which allows for anatomic reduction, rigid internal fixation, and early finger joint motion. Between March 2003 and May 2009, 18 consecutive patients who suffered from 19 dorsal fracture dislocations of the PIP joint with volar articular

Distal radius fracture arthroscopic intraarticular displacement measurement after open reduction and internal fixation from a volar approach.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess articular surface reduction arthroscopically after volar locked-plate fixation of distal radius fractures (DRFs) via fluoroscopyguided open reduction/internal fixation. We also aimed to develop preoperative radiographic criteria to help assist in determining which DRFs may need arthroscopic evaluation. METHODS: A total of 31 consecutive patients with DRF were prospectively enrolled. Posteroanterior (PA) and lateral radiographs as well as axial, coronal, and sagittal CT scans were obtained just after attempted reduction of the DRF. The widest

Open reduction-internal fixation of a talar body fracture via posterior tibial malleolar osteotomy: a case report.

UNLABELLED: Posterior talar fractures are rare and usually represent an isolated fracture of either the medial or lateral tubercle. Posterior talar body fractures can be difficult to fixate and reduce secondary to limited exposure. This single case study demonstrates an unusual posterior body talar fracture that was encroaching on the neurovascular structures. Because of the unusual fracture location and pattern, a posterior approach using a posterior malleolar osteotomy was used for exposure and open reduction-internal fixation (ORIF). To the best of the author's knowledge, this is the first

Short-term outcomes of total hip arthroplasty after complications of open reduction internal fixation for hip fracture.

Failed open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) of the proximal femur can render patients severely disabled. This study analyzed the short-term functional results and complications of total hip arthroplasty (THA) for complications of ORIF after hip fracture. A retrospective arthroplasty database review identified 36 patients treated with a THA for complications of ORIF of the hip. These patients were matched to a cohort of 36 patients who underwent primary unilateral THA for osteoarthritis. Study results indicate that THA for failed ORIF of the hip is a successful procedure despite concerns of

Weber Clamp Dorsal Compression Technique for Distal Radius Fracture Open Reduction and Internal Fixation With Case Series.

Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures (DRF) is a common procedure performed by hand surgeons. Complications include, but are not limited to, failure/loss of reduction, improper positioning of hardware, and nerve or tendon injury. Although uncommon, these risks should be considered when choosing a surgical technique. In this article, we present a novel dorsal compression reduction technique (DCRT) using a Weber clamp and surgical towel for ORIF of DRFs. The DCRT maintains efficacy and efficiency and improves safety by minimizing the risks of penetrating skin or
