STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVE: To create and validate an index describing the extent of spine surgical intervention to allow fair comparisons of complication rates among patients treated by different surgeons, devices, or hospitals.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Safety comparisons in spine surgery are limited by lack of methods that adjust for important variations in the surgical "case-mix." Among other factors, the magnitude of an operation is likely to have a substantial influence on the likelihood of complications.

BACKGROUND: Patients suffering from chronic isolated aortic regurgitation have a less favorable outcome than patients with aortic stenosis. The surgical experience in 75 patients with total anomalous pulmonary venous connection (TAPVC) between 1975 and 1986 was reviewed. Most of these patients underwent operation at less than 1 month of age (39 of 75, 52%). Operative approaches used were the standardized left-sided approach for supracardiac and infracardiac TAPVC, reserving transatrial repair for only the intracardiac lesions.
