AIM: To examine the publication trend of oculoplastic articles throughout the last decade in general ophthalmology journals.
METHODS: A review of all abstracts published between January 2010 to December 2019 in general, clinical ophthalmic journals was conducted. Articles that were categorized as original articles in general and clinical journals were included in the study.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has brought unprecedented challenges to ophthalmology. At least 16 ophthalmologists worldwide have succumbed to COVID-19. It reflects the susceptibility of ophthalmologists to COVID-19 infection as they are in close proximity to patients. This chapter provides an overview of the ocular manifestations of COVID-19, risks of COVID-19 to ophthalmologists and patients, clinical service adjustments due to COVID-19, and infection control measures to minimize the transmission of COVID-19 in ophthalmic practice.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has been studied in ophthalmology since availability of digital information in ophthalmic care. The significant turning point was availability of commercial digital color fundus photography in the late 1990s, which caused digital screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR) to take off. Disorders of the visual system are one of the main features of multiple sclerosis (MS), and have a great impact on the quality of life of patients. Although optic neuritis is the most frequent manifestation, there are other ophthalmological processes not related to neuritis, a knowledge of which is very useful in the management of patients with MS. These abnormalities are described, grouped into impairments of the afferent pathway, efferent pathway, or upper cerebral areas. Additionally, the main ophthalmological side effects of the drugs currently used in the control of MS are described.

Vital dyes have advanced diagnosis and surgical technique in various specialties, including oncology, gastroenterology and ophthalmology. Intra-operative and diagnostic dyes are finding uses in all areas of ophthalmology, including cornea, cataract, retina, glaucoma, orbit and conjunctiva. We provide a summary of current knowledge of the chemical concepts of vital dyes in ophthalmology. We review the properties of dyes, techniques of application, indications and complications in ocular surgery. Vital dyes represent an expanding area of research, and novel dyes deserve further investigation.
