BACKGROUND: Ossifying fibroma (OF) is benign bone lesions, most frequent in young children, more common in the maxillary sinus and mandible (75-89%), the pathogenesis of the tumor is not clear, there are many subtypes of OF. This paper aims to report an OF a case and literature review.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Male, 19 years old, with a progressive history proptosis since 2012, diagnosed as a right supraorbital lesion at an external service and assigned to conservative management. Then, he evolved with double vision, which worsened in February of 2018, associated with a moderate headache. On admissi…

Orbital pathology requiring surgery can be planned based on the nature of the disease and the position of this relative to the globe and optic nerve complex. Multidisciplinary treatment is now common, and this sometimes includes multiple surgical corridors employed for approach. The orbit is also now frequently used as a corridor to intracranial pathology, and these same processes may be applied. Combined surgical approaches, whether at the same time or staged, allow for minimization of manipulation of critical neurovascular structures in complex skull base pathology.

Orbital location of teratoma is extremely rare. The differential diagnosis can be difficult and they may be mistaken for other tumors as they may have both cystic and solid areas. The authors report a case of a 7-day-old neonate with a massive congenital orbital teratoma in which it was decided to apply a surgical technique that involves the aspiration of the cystic fluid, the subsequent infusion of fibrin glue, and the radical excision. The definitive histological examination reported a diagnosis of trifillic cystic teratoma. At fourth year of follow up the patient is free from disease.

The cavernous hemangioma (or angioma) of the orbit (HCO) is a benign, encapsulated venous malformation and the most common primary lesion of the orbit in adults. It occurs more often in women. These lesions can cause a unilateral proptosis (exophthalmos), optic nerve damage and other signs of orbital pathology, with varying degrees of visual impairment. When an HCO is suspected, ultrasound, scanner or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are a valuable aid to its definitive diagnosis. When HCO is symptomatic, multidisciplinary surgical management by a trained specialist in orbital surgery should be…

Orbital venous malformation (OVM) is one of the most common orbital mass of adults, accounting for approximately 5% to 15% of all vascular abnormalities in the central nervous system and representing 9% of orbital lesions. Clinical presentation is variable from asymptomatic cases to symptomatic ones. The purpose of the authors' work is to analyze OVM incidence and prevalence in a cohort of patients referred over the last 40 years to the Orbital Unit, tertiary center for orbital diseases.Records of 224 patients diagnosed with CVM in a 40-year period were retrospectively reviewed extracting prev…

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) represents the most common type of primary cancer of the liver and is associated with poor prognosis. It is t … (35%), and portal lymph nodes (27%). Also, intra-abdominal lymph nodes and bones are common sites. Orbital metastases rarely occur, representing the 3-7% of orbital masses. These metastases are usually found in advanced tumor stages. The mechanism of metastasis to the orbit is difficult to determine. A hematogenous route, as for other primary neoplasms …

PURPOSE: Orbital vascular malformations are classified by their hemodynamic properties, either high or low flow. Low-flow lesions may be simple venous, lymphatic, or combined lymphaticovenous malformations. The authors report a series of cases in which predominantly low flow, venous lesions were unexpectedly noted to have arterial feeders.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients identified by the authors as having orbital varices with arterial components was conducted. The authors identified 7 such cases. After careful review, 2 cases were excluded due to inconclusive neuroradiograp…

Traumatic or amputation neuromas are neoformations developing after damage to a peripheral nerve. They are not proper tumors but rather a reactive process or a frustrated attempt of nerve regeneration. Traumatic neuromas are potentially found in every sensory peripheral nerve and often at the site of past surgical intervention, including orbital surgery. A 29-year-old Northern African migrant presented progressive exophthalmos and progressive loss of acuity in left eye, which had started about 6 months before after a cranio-facial trauma caused by a violent assault. MRI of the orbits showed a …

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the authors was to discuss orbital complications of nasal cavity and paranasal sinus diseases.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: Patients with nasal and paranasal sinus diseases that affected orbit were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with primary orbital abnormality and those without radiologic orbital signs were excluded. Data regarding age and gender distribution, orbital and ocular findings, radiologic findings, and presence of an additional sinonasal disease were analyzed.
RESULTS: Disorders affecting orbit were categorized into 6 categories. Mean age was 41.25 ± 22.14 (rang…

Benign triton tumor (BTT) or neuromuscular hamartoma is an uncommon tumor composed of mature neural and well-differentiated striated muscular elements. Its development is exceptionally rare in the adult and head region. This report describes a case of adulthood BTT that occurred in the orbit. The patient was a 53-year-old woman who presented with right periorbital swelling and pain in eyeball over 2 months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a well-enhancing mass surrounding optic nerve and ocular muscles in the right retrobulbar area. The tumor was subtotally removed via transcranial approac…

PURPOSE: To describe a clinical case of an orbital paraganglioma that displayed regression after biopsy alone.
METHODS: Case report.
RESULTS: A 75-year-old female was examined for a right orbital tumor suspected to be metastatic breast carcinoma. An orbital biopsy was performed with significant hemorrhage encountered requiring extensive cautery. There was apparent clinical regression of the tumor with no signs of proptosis or eye movement restriction two years after this patient's biopsy. Histology was consistent with paraganglioma (glomus tumor).
CONCLUSION: Although we cannot rule out spo…

Cholesterol granuloma is a rare, well-defined lesion of the orbit. In the orbit, diploe of the frontal bone is involved almost exclusively. We report an atypical case of cholesterol granuloma involving superomedial quadrant of orbit. A 42-year-old male presented with progressive, painless, proptosis with infero-temporal displacement of left eye. A large mass was felt beneath the bony orbital margin in the superomedial quadrant of the left orbit. Computerized tomography (CT) scan revealed an extraconal superomedial, heterogeneous enhancing mass which was isodense with brain and pushing the glob…

Severe brain injury is rare after assault to the head with a fist. Our patient was a 39-year-old white male who was punched in a parking lot. The subject fell on his right head. He did not lose consciousness. The subject was taken to the hospital. On admission, his blood alcohol concentration was 229 mg/dL. A CT scan of the head showed no injury. He was admitted to the detoxification unit. He became sober, and was seen ambulating at 3:30 am. By 5:20 am, he was unresponsive. A CT scan of the head showed that an epidural hematoma had developed over the right temporal lobe. The hematoma was drain

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The anterior lid crease approach to the orbit allows the surgeon access to the superior orbital compartments through an upper eyelid incision giving excellent exposure with minimal damage to normal structures. Because the incision is in the lid crease, scarring is minimal. This route into the orbit has gained popularity in recent years and has been used by multiple different surgical subspecialties.
RECENT FINDINGS: Historically, the eyelid approach to the orbit has been used mainly by ophthalmic plastic surgeons for removal of intraconal and extraconal orbital tumors, orbi…
