Maxillo-mandibular distraction osteogenesis for hemifacial microsomia in children.

To obviate or lessen the long period of use of orthodontic appliances after distraction for hemifacial microsomia in the mixed dentition patients, simultaneous maxillo-mandibular distraction osteogenesis has been performed in 10 patients aged 7 to 12 years with hemifacial microsomia. In these patients, there were two cases of type I, five cases of type IIa, and three cases of type IIb. A uniplanar internal distraction device was used in all cases. After maxillary Le Fort I osteotomy and mandibular ramus osteotomy, a uniplanar internal distraction device was attached to the mandible. On days 5

Skeletal Class III and anterior open bite treatment with different retention protocols: a report of three cases.

The treatment of skeletal class III and anterior open bite can be unstable and orthodontists frequently observe relapse. Here, we report on the management of three patients with skeletal class III profiles and open bites treated by orthodontic camouflage. Each received a retention protocol involving the use of two separate appliances during the night and day accompanied by myofunctional therapy. Long-term follow-up revealed a stable outcome.

Cleidocranial dysplasia: modern concepts of treatment and a report of an orthodontic resistant case requiring a restorative solution.

A case is presented of a young boy with cleidocranial dysplasia, whose multiple supernumerary teeth prevented the eruption of most of his permanent teeth. His maxillary incisor teeth failed to erupt following removal of anterior supernumerary elements and orthodontic traction. Lack of abutment teeth and a difficult maxillary base made prosthetic treatment almost impossible. A horseshoe acrylic denture retained by milled crowns bonded to the deciduous canines and a maxillary first molar proved a very successful restoration. The problems of treating this group of patients are discussed.

Extrusion of root-filled incisors in beagles--a light microscope and scanning electron microscope investigation.

The response of the periodontal ligament to orthodontic extrusion of the incisor of a beagle was examined with light microscope and scanning electron microscope techniques. The ligament morphology was slightly altered by the procedure but was essentially normal. Teeth that were extruded and retained for 12 weeks exhibited partial relapse. Where a full thickness mucogingival flap was raised and immediately replaced in lieu of retention, continued extrusion was observed. Root resorption was observed at the interproximal region of the cervical third in three out of five specimens. The resorption

Changes in functional occlusion during the postorthodontic retention period: a prospective longitudinal clinical study.

INTRODUCTION: Functional occlusion has received little attention in short- and long-term evaluations of orthodontic treatment results. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the long-term changes in functional occlusion during the postorthodontic retention period. METHODS: One hundred fifteen consecutive patients treated with multibracket appliances were examined twice: directly after appliance removal (T1) and after an average retention period of 24 months (T2). The clinical examination comprised the assessment of anteroposterior and lateral interferences (slides) between the retru

Interdisciplinary Management of Maxillary Midline Diastema With a Papillary Penetrating Labial Frenum Using Orthodontic Therapy and Diode Laser-Assisted Frenectomy: A Case Report.

Maxillary midline diastema is a common esthetic concern with a multifactorial etiology that includes aberrant maxillary labial frenum attachment. A papillary penetrating labial frenum may contribute to the persistence of a maxillary midline diastema and may warrant consideration during treatment planning. We report a 19-year-old woman with a maxillary midline diastema associated with a papillary penetrating labial frenum. Comprehensive fixed orthodontic treatment was completed over 16 months, achieving closure of the diastema. Because the aberrant frenum persisted after space closure, a 980 nm

Autotransplantation of 28 premolar donor teeth in 24 orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVE: To test the null hypothesis that premolar autotransplantation is not successful for orthodontic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present study, 28 premolar transplants from 24 orthodontic patients were associated with orthodontic treatment. At a routine 3-month appointment, patients underwent a dental radiograph and a chair-side observation for periodontal problems. Three sets of dental radiographs were taken by one dental assistant using a custom holder at: preoperation (T0), 2 year postoperation (T1), and retention (T2) (4- to 14-year follow-up observation) stages. Comparison of survival rate and duration of maxillary and mandibular lingual bonded retainers - a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to evaluate the survival rates of maxillary and mandibular lingual bonded retainers fabricated from coaxial wire. It also analyzed the impact of operator experience, as well as patients' inherent and treatment-related factors, including age, sex, malocclusion, and the number of teeth bonded, on their survival rates. METHODS: This study comprised a sample size of 300 participants. The records of patients with maxillary and mandibular lingual bonded retainers were retrospectively analyzed during a five-year follow-up period to assess retainer survival, types of fail

Effects of rapid-slow maxillary expansion on the dentofacial structures.

BACKGROUND: To date, no study has determined if rapid followed by slow maxillary expansion (also termed 'semi-rapid' expansion) has the same effects on the dentofacial skeleton as rapid maxillary expansion. OBJECTIVE: To determine the vertical and sagittal changes in the facial skeleton during and following rapid then slow maxillary expansion (R-SME). METHODS: Bonded maxillary expansion appliances were used to separate the maxillae over six days by activating the midline screws twice a day. The screws were then activated three times a week until sufficient expansion was obtained (Mean: 3.4 m

Review of the success of pulp exposure treatment of cariously and traumatically exposed pulps in immature permanent incisors and molars.

The decision to retain immature permanent tooth with pulp disease is problematical. Restoring the tooth would normally involve some form of pulp capping/pulpotomy procedure or a more radical pulpectomy and root canal treatment. Pulp capping/pulpotomy procedures, where all or part of the pulp is retained, relies upon an accurate assessment of the pulp condition, and the careful management of the remaining healthy tissue. Pulpectomy or root canal treatment is technically difficult as the root apex is open with the result that conventional preparation and filling techniques are compromised. On th

[Computerized tomography of the alveolar process].

In addition to the conventional radiological methods used in odontology, computed tomography (CT) provides superposition-free images of the mandible and maxilla. Its value has been proved not only in cases of malignancy but also in many other problems. If an examination is performed with a slice thickness of less than 1.5 mm, the form and position of retained teeth in the alveolar bone, as well as subsequent lesions of neighboring permanent teeth, can be visualized so that early treatment can be planned. If the parodontal space of a retained tooth is visible, orthodontic intervention is possib

Palatally impacted maxillary canine with congenitally missing lateral incisors and midline diastema.

Multiple treatment options are available for patients who have impacted canines in addition to congenitally missing lateral incisors. This article describes the treatment of a 13-year-old postpubertal girl with bilaterally impacted permanent maxillary canines, missing lateral incisors, retained deciduous canines, and a midline diastema. The orthodontic treatment plan included extraction of the deciduous canines. A lingual and labial approach (1-couple force system) was used to move the permanent canines into the arch. Through a collaborative team effort, including an orthodontist and a periodo

Abnormalities of canines eruption.

The aim of this article is to present the personal experience on the treatment of 2 groups of patients presenting the same problem: the recovery of teeth 13 and 23 in the dental arch. The 1(st) group consists of adult patients aged approximately 20-28 years with a retained position of the permanent canines and permanence of the respective deciduous teeth in the dental arch. In the 2(nd) group, the loss of the deciduous teeth had not been followed by the physiological eruption of the permanent teeth. The authors' aim is to demonstrate that similar orthodontic treatments can represent valid solu

Radiographic evaluations of molar intrusion and changes with or without retention in rats.

OBJECTIVE: To describe radiographic changes caused by molar intrusion with or without retention methods in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty 12-week-old male rats were assigned to six groups (n  =  5 each). Molar intrusion was achieved with an intrusion spring to two maxillary molars for 2 weeks. The control group underwent the same experimental conditions, but without the intrusion spring. The intrusion and control groups were then euthanized. In four groups, the intrusion spring was disengaged after intrusion and the new molar positions were either retained or not with an occlusal bite-bl
