Linear mandibular measurements: comparison between orthopantomograms and lateral cephalograms.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the reliability of length measurements of the mandible by comparing orthopantomograms (OPTs) with lateral cephalograms. DESIGN: Observational study. SETTING: OPTs and lateral cephalograms were taken of 20 human dry skulls. Four orthodontists and four maxillofacial surgeons located landmarks on all radiographs using a computer program for cephalometric measurements. Intraobserver and interobserver variability in locating landmarks was assessed, as well as positioning of the skulls prior to radiography between the x-ray assistants. Magnification differences between th…

Detection of lingual root resorptions in the intraoral radiographs. An experimental study.

An experimental study was undertaken in an attempt 1) to describe the possibilities to detect lingual root resorptions of upper incisors in … ent charts and at random within each chart. On two different occasions three groups of observers, 5 orthodontists, 5 pedodontists and 5 radiologists were asked to register any detected "root resorptions" on the right first and second incisors. The first chart included radiographs with a reduction of 0-3 mm and the second chart 0-6 mm. The orthodontists and pedo …

Replacement of congenitally missing lateral incisors with implant crowns.

Esthetic adolescent dental treatment has become a staple of the restorative office. The combined interdisciplinary efforts of the orthodontist, oral surgeon, and restorative dentist were necessary to achieve an esthetic and functionally successful result. Implant placement and restoration is a preferred solution for the replacement of missing teeth in any age group but is particularly beneficial for younger patients.

Periodontal surgical management of impacted maxillary cuspids.

The diagnosis and surgical management of impacted maxillary cuspids has been discussed. The general practitioner must be aware of the normal and abnormal pathways as well as the correct age of eruption of the maxillary cuspid. The proper management of impacted maxillary canine teeth requires the careful cooperation and communication between the general practitioner, the orthodontist and the periodontist or oral surgeon.

[Risk prevention and control of facial esthetic defects during orthodontic treatment].

Facial aesthetic defect is obviously different from facial aesthetic standard. Orthodontic treatment may expose or even magnify other facial aesthetic defects while solving patients' main problems. There are many aesthetic traps in facial bone structure, soft tissue and teeth. Orthodontists should comprehensively recognize patients' dentofacial aesthetic defects. When solving major problems, we should keep an eye on the changes of minor problems and other uncontrollable factors. Potential risks should be clearly recognized and prevented.

It's time we listened to our teeth: the SoundBite hearing system.

The SoundBite hearing system (Sonitus Medical, San Mateo, Calif) allows people with single-sided deafness to wear an intraoral device and a small microphone in the deaf ear to regain lost hearing. A piezoelectric activator in a small removable unilateral oral appliance conducts sound through the bone via the teeth to the good ear. The goal of this article is to introduce the SoundBite, a new bone-conduction hearing device, to dentists and orthodontists.

Fundamentals of small animal orthodontics.

The basic principles and concepts that govern the discipline of orthodontics are explored. The movement of teeth is mediated primarily through the periodontal ligament. When the periodontal ligament is stretched, bone apposition occurs. Conversely, in areas of compression, bone resorption occurs. The subject tooth moves in the direction of the force. The orthodontist must be cognizant of the prevailing ethical guidelines and the functional needs of the patient.

Unintentional removal of a developing permanent premolar during primary molar extraction: a 10-year case report.

A 14-year-old girl underwent extraction of an ankylosed primary left second molar as requested by her orthodontist. The developing mandibular left second premolar (tooth 20) was unintentionally removed during extraction of the primary molar. Immediate measures were taken to reimplant tooth 20. Recall appointments over the next 10 years included monitoring of tooth 20. The patient also was followed up closely by her orthodontist during this time. Tooth 20 was monitored for proper eruption, root development, and pulpal vitality. The tooth erupted normally, and the results of pulp testing continu

Rescue surgery (surgical repositioning) of impacted lower second molars.

The impaction of lower second molars, given that its incidence is 0.03 to 0.21%, is a rare complication in tooth eruption. It has been detected more often in unilateral form than bilateral and is more common in the mandible than in the maxillary. It has a slight predilection for males, and mesial inclination is more usual. A wide variety of therapeutic approaches have been published, basically referring to surgical techniques, independent or complemented by means of orthodontic technical aids, with the aim of placing the tooth in the correct position, and which are encompassed under the concep

Orthodontic Treatment in Adult Patient with Reduced Periodontium: A Case Report.

Patients presenting reduced periodontium represent a major concern for orthodontists. The purpose of this article is to present the clinical case of an adult patient who presented sequel of periodontal disease (diastemas) compromising her dental aesthetics. She was subjected to an orthodontic treatment with the application of light forces distant from the teeth with reduced periodontium. A periodontal support therapy was successfully implemented. The final stage of the treatment indicated satisfactory occlusal and periodontal characteristics.

Dramatic dilatation of the upper airway secondary to a Valsalva manoeuvre in a lateral cephalometric teleradiograph of a child.

Radiographs are routinely used by orthodontists for the planning of treatment for their patients and they can, in some cases, play a decisive role in the early diagnosis of some unexpected medical or surgical disorders. This report presents the case of a substantial dilatation of the upper airway in a 10-year-old girl, which was attributed to a forced Valsalva manoeuvre. The diagnosis was confirmed upon repetition of the teleradiograph with the mouth open.

[Orthodontic preparation for orthognathic surgery. Various specific points].

Orthodontic preparation before orthognatic surgery must straighten teeth alignment to enable correct adaptation of the upper and lower arches. It must also rectify dento-alveolar abnormalities partially responsible for the dysmorphosis and which can hinder smooth articulation of the bones. Thus before and after the operation, the orthodontist will have to prepare and monitor the surgical splints used in posterior deficiencies.

Evolution of occlusion and temporomandibular disorder in orthodontics: Past, present, and future.

Occlusion has been an important consideration in orthodontics since the beginning of the discipline. Early emphasis was placed on the alignment of the teeth, the stability of the intercuspal position, and the esthetic value of proper tooth positioning. These factors remain important to orthodontists, but orthopedic principles associated with masticatory functions must also be considered. Orthopedic stability in the masticatory structures should be a routine treatment goal to help reduce risk factors associated with developing temporomandibular disorders.
