Heterotopic ossification of the hip after non-accidental injury in a child: case report.

Heterotopic ossification is bone formation that occurs in an abnormal soft tissue location, most commonly after trauma, head injury, and surgical procedures such as joint arthroplasty. We report a rare case of severe heterotopic ossification caused by nonaccidental injury in a 3-year-old child. To our knowledge, heterotopic ossification as a result of nonaccidental injury in children has been reported in only 2 other patients. Physicians should be aware of this rare presentation of nonaccidental injury, and nonaccidental injury should be considered in the differential diagnosis in children who

Is radiation superior to indomethacin to prevent heterotopic ossification in acetabular fractures?: a systematic review.

UNLABELLED: Heterotopic ossification is a well-known complication after fixation of an acetabular fracture. Indomethacin and radiation therapy are used as prophylaxis to prevent heterotopic ossification. It is unclear, however, whether either is superior, although this may relate to lack of power in individual studies. To compare the effectiveness of indomethacin with the effectiveness of radiation therapy, we conducted a systematic review in which all published prospective studies were evaluated. We performed a literature search in PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Controlled Trial Re

Heterotopic ossification of the extensor tendons in the hand associated with traumatic spinal cord injury.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) occurs in spinal cord injury (SCI), most frequently in the large joints such as hips, shoulders, knees, and elbows. It always occurs below the level of neurologic lesion. In the upper extremities, HO associated with SCI usually involves the flexor side of the involved joint. HO has only been reported once to involve the hands and rarely develops parallel to the long bones. We present a 44-year-old male with C5 traumatic SCI who developed HO involving the extensor tendons of one hand. The HO was discovered four months after the SCI and involved the extensor sheaths

Postoperative heterotopic ossification in children: a comparison of children with spina bifida and with cerebral palsy.

The authors reviewed 250 consecutive myotomies and tenotomies performed on the hips of 186 children. Two groups were studied: 162 children with cerebral palsy and 24 children with spina bifida. In total 19 children were found to have heterotopic ossification postoperatively. The incidence of heterotopic ossification was 21% in the spina bifida group and 8.6% in the cerebral palsy group. The most severe cases were in children with thoracic myelomeningocele. Only one child with lumbar myelomeningocele had ossification, and it was mild. This difference was statistically significant. Two children

[Heterotopic ossification and ulnar nerve compression syndrome of the elbow. A report of two cases].

Heterotopic ossification is a well known complication in patients after longterm coma following CNS trauma. The association of heterotopic ossification and a nerve compression syndrome situated near the calcifications is less common. The authors present 2 CNS traumatised patients who secondarily developed the association of heterotopic ossification of the elbow with a compressive syndrome of the ulnar nerve. Although heterotopic ossification does not appear to be the direct cause of the nerve compression, it certainly promotes compression it because of the flexion it causes.

Heterotopic ossification and pseudoarthrosis in the shoulder following encephalitis. A case report and review of the literature.

Heterotopic bone formation, or myositis ossificans, is common, particularly following trauma, total hip arthroplasty, spinal cord injury, severe head injury, and long-term coma. Although the mechanism is unknown, the pathogenesis is assumed to depend on transformation of mesenchymal cells to bone forming cells in response to a variety of stimuli. The clinical findings, laboratory data, roentgenograms, and radionuclide studies are standard aids in the diagnosis of heterotopic ossification. The treatment usually consists of range-of-motion exercise, nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, X-ray the

Heterotopic ossification prophylaxis after hip arthroscopy: a retrospective comparative study of acemetacin and indomethacin.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy and safety profiles of acemetacin and indomethacin for prophylaxis of heterotopic ossification (HO) following hip arthroscopy. While indomethacin is a well-established agent, evidence on acemetacin remains limited. This retrospective study included 114 hips of 110 patients who underwent hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement between September 2022 and September 2024. Patients received indomethacin or acemetacin for 3 weeks postoperatively. HO development was assessed radiologically using the Brooker classification. Functional outcomes

Heterotopic Ossification and Secondary Craniofacial Deformity Following Alveolar Cleft Repair With Costal Cartilage Graft.

BACKGROUND: Autologous costal cartilage grafting represents an alternative to iliac bone in alveolar cleft repair, yet long-term complications such as heterotopic ossification (HO) and secondary craniofacial deformities remain underreported. This case report describes the management of a patient with late-onset HO and secondary nasolabial deformity following costal cartilage grafting. METHODS: A 23-year-old female presented 8 years after alveolar cleft repair with autologous costal cartilage graft, exhibiting maxillary protrusion, recurrent alveolar cleft, and orbicularis oris dynamic imbalan

Low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm with heterotopic ossification and pseudomyxoma peritonei: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Heterotopic ossification (HO) within the gastrointestinal tract is extremely rare, and its association with low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP) is exceptional. We report a rare case of LAMN with visceral HO and PMP, highlighting its clinical features, pathological findings, and postoperative outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: A 55-year-old female presented with progressive abdominal distension over 4 months. Imaging suggested an ovarian mass with ascites. Intraoperatively, gelatinous material filled the peritoneal cavity, with findings consi

Inhibition of M2 macrophage-mediated mesenchymal stem cell migration: Boldine attenuates elbow heterotopic ossification.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is characterized by abnormal bone formation in soft tissues, often following trauma or surgery. Transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) signaling and M2 macrophage polarization play critical roles in the recruitment and differentiation of mesenchymal stromal/progenitor cells (MSPCs), promoting HO. METHODS: An elbow joint trauma-induced HO mouse model was established, where model mice were treated with dichloromethylene-bisphosphonate (Cl2MBP) liposomes or PBS liposomes to deplete macrophages. In addition, boldine was administered to evaluate its thera

Excision of Femoral Heterotopic Ossification and Lysis of Adhesions After Medial Collateral Ligament Reconstruction.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) and arthrofibrosis are known complications after medial collateral ligament (MCL) reconstruction and other arthroscopic procedures. They can result in clinically significant symptoms such as pain, swelling, and ankylosis. Surgical removal of HO and adhesions may provide relief of symptoms, as well as increased knee range of motion. HO excision in the setting of MCL reconstruction is not well documented in the literature. This article describes the excision of femoral HO and arthroscopic lysis of adhesions after prior MCL reconstruction and concomitant multiple-lig

Bilateral severe heterotopic ossification following primary total knee arthroplasty: a case report in Pakistan.

The incidence of unilateral minor heterotopic ossification after primary total knee arthroplasty is still unknown, but bilateral severe heterotopic ossification is rare and has not been reported before. Presented in this report is a 60-year-old female patient who developed bilateral knee pain and stiffness 2 weeks after primary total knee arthroplasty. Her weight was 70 kg and body mass index was 32.2. Preoperatively, she had bilateral varus deformity of both knees. X-rays taken 3 months after surgery revealed bilateral severe heterotopic ossification. The patient had been on non-operative tre

Tendon-derived cathepsin K-expressing progenitor cells activate Hedgehog signaling to drive heterotopic ossification.

Heterotopic ossification (HO) is pathological bone formation characterized by ossification within muscle, tendons, or other soft tissues. However, the cells of origin and mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of HO remain elusive. Here we show that deletion of suppressor of fused (Sufu) in cathepsin K-Cre-expressing (Ctsk-Cre-expressing) cells resulted in spontaneous and progressive ligament, tendon, and periarticular ossification. Lineage tracing studies and cell functional analysis demonstrated that Ctsk-Cre could label a subpopulation of tendon-derived progenitor cells (TDPCs) marked by t

Pyrophosphate therapy prevents trauma-induced calcification in the mouse model of neurogenic heterotopic ossification.

Trauma-induced calcification is the pathological consequence of complex injuries which often affect the central nervous system and other parts of the body simultaneously. We demonstrated by an animal model recapitulating the calcification of the above condition that adrenaline transmits the stress signal of brain injury to the calcifying tissues. We have also found that although the level of plasma pyrophosphate, the endogenous inhibitor of calcification, was normal in calcifying animals, it could not counteract the acute calcification. However, externally added pyrophosphate inhibited calcifi

Inhibition of JAK1/2 Tyrosine Kinases Reduces Neurogenic Heterotopic Ossification After Spinal Cord Injury.

Neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHO) are very incapacitating complications of traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries (SCI) which manifest as abnormal formation of bone tissue in periarticular muscles. NHO are debilitating as they cause pain, partial or total joint ankylosis and vascular and nerve compression. NHO pathogenesis is unknown and the only effective treatment remains surgical resection, however once resected, NHO can re-occur. To further understand NHO pathogenesis, we developed the first animal model of NHO following SCI in genetically unmodified mice, which mimics most clin

Heterotopic Ossification Prophylaxis After Total Hip Arthroplasty: Randomized Trial of 400 vs 700 cGy.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a known complication following total hip arthroplasty. Radiation is an effective prophylaxis, but an optimal protocol has yet to be determined. We performed a randomized, double-blinded clinical trial in high-risk patients to determine the efficacy of 400 vs 700 cGy doses of radiation. METHODS: One hundred forty-seven patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty and at high risk for HO at an urban medical center were randomized to receive either a single 400 or 700 cGy dose of radiation postoperatively. High risk was defined as a diagnosis of diffuse
